FROM THE PASTOR March 4, 2018 3

My dear sisters and brothers, Lent is a good time to pause and see what you believe and who you believe in: I believe in God who is love, and who has given the earth to all people. I believe in Jesus Christ who came to heal us and to free us from all oppression.

I believe in the Spirit of God, who works in and through all who are turned towards the truth. I believe in the Community of faith, which is called to be at the service of all people. I believe in God’s promise to finally destroy the power of sin in us all, and to establish justice and peace for all humankind. I do not believe in the right of the strongest, nor the force of arms, nor the power of oppression. I believe in human rights, in the solidarity of all people, in the power of nonviolence. I do not believe in racism, in the power that comes from wealth and privilege, or in any established order that enslaves. I believe that all men and women are equally human and that God intends for the world, an order based on justice and love. I do not believe that war and hunger are inevitable and peace unattainable. I believe in the beauty of simplicity, in love with open hands, and in peace on earth. I believe that all the earth is sacred. I do not believe that the disfigurement of our world is what God intended, that suffering need be in vain, that death is the end. I dare believe, always in and in spite of everything, in God’s power to transform and transfigure, fulfilling the promise of a new heaven and a new earth, where justice and peace will flourish. Believing more deeply in you with love, Fr. Rich, SS.CC.

Lord, when I feel like I'm drowning....

drowning in my work and responsibilities,

in my fears and anxiety, in my worries, doubts and troubles...

drowning in my loss, my loneliness and grief,

in my self and in my passions, in my confusion and my foolishness...

drowning in my sins and in my failures, in my sorrow and my hope-

lessness...

when I feel like I'm drowning... remind me that you're always there,

Lord: that you see me in the depths,

that you reach down and take my hand

to draw me up and out until I break the surface

and your Spirit breathes in me until I breathe again in hope

to live another day...

remind me, Lord, that you walk the waters of my life

and will not let me perish: that you rescue me and pull me

from the depths when I am sinking, that you save me from myself...

remind me that you'll never forget me, never abandon me,

never let me slip beyond your grasp but that your hand will hold me fast

and pull me free of danger 'til I rest, secure and safe,

in you, my Lord, my Savior...

Amen.

MAJOR TAX NEWS YOU NEED TO BE AWARE OF IF YOU ARE OVER 70 ½. Many people will no longer itemize on their Schedule A. This is where you get your tax deduction for Holy Name of Mary contributions. Consider gifting some or all your IRA Required Minimum Distribution to at least the level of the donations you have been making.

Here is how it works:

Example: Age 73

IRA Balance 12/31/2017: $150,000

IRA Required Minimum Distribution: $5,700

Normal gifts to Holy Name of Mary: $3,000

Gift partial IRA Required Minimum Distribution to Holy Name of Mary:

$3,000

Net Effect: $5,700 Required Minimum Distribution

$3,000 Gift

$2,700 Taxable Income to report

6 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT ART & ENVIRONMENT

STATIONS OF THE CROSS BY FR. BILL MOORE, SS.CC. Hanging around the crucifix for Lent are Fr. Bills beautiful Stations of the

Cross. They had been hanging in our Day Chapel and will be showcased

throughout this liturgical season. We will be highlighting each of the stations

with commentary from Fr. Bill in our bulletin each week. Thank you Fr. Bill for

enabling us to enhance our church with these

beautiful paintings.

FIFTH STATION —

SIMON HELPS JESUS CARRY HIS

CROSS

Here, I want to stress the physicality of the

cross; I layered imprints from an old board

and adhered bits of wood, metal, and part

of the binding from a discarded book.

He is the Word made flesh.

SIXTH STATION —

VERONICA WIPES JESUS’ FACE

I often incorporate fabric– more often than

not– my paint rags– into my work. It can af-

ford another level or layered of visual inter-

est, as well as a certain purity and honesty. I

still hear people refer with appreciation to

the “seamless garment;” I much prefer the

seams. In this station, the features of Jesus

were quickly composed with two cruciform

strokes/slashes, reminding me of the precious

imprint revealed to the legendary woman of

faith.

SEVENTH STATION —

JESUS FALL THE SECOND TIME

The ellipse—like shape in the seventh station,

Jesus Falls the Second Time, affords me the

opportunity for a play on words. In the

Greek, ellipse can be translated “to fall

short;” Jesus falls, but never fell short of do-

ing the will of His Father.

PALM SUNDAY ART AND ENVIRONMENT Palm Sunday is fast approaching and preparations for the church are well on the way. To make our church spectacular for the beginning of Holy Week we are in need of palms, all varieties, to use in the decorations throughout the church. Palms would need to be dropped off on Thursday, March 22nd or Friday, March 23rd before 12:00 pm here at the church. Please email Brenda Luna at [email protected] if you are able to donate palms or have any questions. Thank you for helping the Art and Environment Ministry!

10 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT FUNDRAISERS & DRIVES

HEALTHCARE AND WELLNESS CLIPBOARD AND PROGRESS NOTES: The excitement has not

subsided yet at the launching of the HEALTHCARE AND WELLNESS MINISTRY, and since then major progress is made in the formation of a core group, collecting and organizing the contact list of and for all the ministry volunteers. An email group has also been completed. All these activities are well within the time-line established for implementing some tasks. We are still in need of more volunteers, and ask those interested to contact Lani Galvan at '[email protected]' Our immediate future plans involve developing an inventory of volunteer skills, talents, and interests in the ministry, as well as an inventory of resources, which include community resources for the services we hope to render in the ministry. We are currently preparing for a healthy corner, perhaps a HEALTHCARE AND WELLNESS MINISTRY booth, at the Parish Festival. We will be asking for volunteers as well to provide presence in the booth.

MARTHA MINISTRY Can you make a sandwich? Are you organized and a meal plan-ner? Do you drive? Are you a gourmet chef in the making? Do you love to feed your family and friends?? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then we want you! Our Martha Ministry is

back up and running, but we need you to help us serve our parish family members in need. If you would like to learn more about this important and beautiful “foodie” ministry, please join us on Thursday, March 22nd in the church at 6:30 p.m. We will answer all your questions, make some new friends, and learn all about how Martha Ministry helps our friends when they need us … this is one of the easiest ways to get involved! Please consider sharing your gifts with this amazing ministry … I promise you that it will touch your heart over and over again … one sandwich at a time! If you need further information, please feel free to contact Lani at 909.599.1243, ext. 111 or [email protected]

If you’d like more information – and especially if you’d like to volunteer to help, please contact: Steve Perez at (909) 766-2226, or e-mail us at [email protected]

SUNDAY march 11 DID YOU KNOW?! Helping children problem solve through communication Often the easiest response to complicated conversations about sensitive issues is a generic one, but these moments can be op-portunities to help children grow. For example, if a child comes to you and tells you that a friend is being left out of social ac-tivities, you might respond with a question: "Do you think there is anything you can do help him/her feel more included?" Or if your child comes to you for money for social activities, instead of just giving them the cash or suggesting how they might get the money, you might prompt them to consider ways that they could earn money or fundraise on their own. In this way, you are not only helping a child find a solution to an immediate situation, but also helping them to grow in wisdom and prudence.
