A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE— Jesus “was led by the Spirit in the wilderness.” What is the wilderness in your life to which the Holy Spirit is leading you this Lent? Spend this Lent in your “wilderness” with God at work. Where is the Spirit leading you this Lent? “The Joy of Love” – is Our Lady of Grace Parish’s 5 part Series for Lent

starting Thursday, March 9 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM in Keefer Hall, beginning with theologian and author William Roberts, Ph.D., professor emeritus, University of Dayton. Each of the following Thursdays we will present various sections of the papal exhortation with small group discussion. We will use Pope Francis’ Amoris Laetitia as our guide throughout the series (available for all participants). For more information, please contact the OLG rectory: 412-279-7070 or [email protected] March 9 – The Joy of Love: Pope Francis’ Pastoral Approach to Divorce and Remarriage, Overview & Chapter 8 – Dr. William Roberts will examine precise statements the pope makes in this regard, and some of the episcopal controversy this has evoked. It is the chapter, Accompanying, Discerning and Integrating Weakness, in which Pope Francis offers, “An invitation to mercy and the pastoral discernment of those situations that fall short of what the Lord demands.” March 16 – In the Light of the Word: Experiences and Challenges, Ch.1 & 2 – Geoffrey Schnieder, Director for Adult Catechesis and Evangelization will look at the family from a scriptural perspective. The Bible is full of stories about families and passages directed at families. How do these provide meaning and hope for contemporary family life? Geoff will then enter into the pope’s examination of the current reality of families. How should the Church and the state respond to the challenges families face today? March 23 – Looking to Jesus: the Loving Vocation of the Family Ch.3 & 4 – Fr. Richard Infante, Pastor of Our Lady of Grace Church, will look at the ministry and teachings of Jesus and then see how they relate to family life. How does the Catholic tradition enrich the meaning of marriage? Father Richard will reflect on the significance of Saint Paul’s famous “Hymn to Love” (1Cor. 13:4-7), and then see how it applies to marriages and family life today. March 30 – Love Made Fruitful, Ch. 5 & 6 – Don & Erin Fontana, Don is the Coordinator of Religious Education at Our Lady of Grace and Erin is an attorney. In the words of Pope Francis, “love always gives life . . . the family is the setting in which new life is not only born but welcomed as a gift of God” They will address the role of mothers, fathers, and grandparents in the family.

April 6 – The Spirituality of the Family, Ch. 7 – Mike Aquilina, noted Catholic author and

popular presenter will examine how parents play an essential role in the moral development of

their children. Mike will then examine the certain basic characteristics of the “specific spirituality

that unfolds in family life and its relationships” He will address how a family can truly become a

“domestic church.”

The joy of love experienced by families is also the joy of the Church!

~ Pope Francis

MARCH 5, 2017

The Lenten Season at our parish is filled with opportunities for prayer, confession and fellowship with our weekly fish fries. In addition to devotional practices like the Friday evening Stations of the Cross, this Lent we are offering a five part adult education series based on Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, “The Joy of Love.” You may recall that our parish joined more than 1 million of the faithful in September, 2015 for the Celebration of Families in Philadelphia with the Pope. Following that world conference and the October Synod in Rome, Pope Francis wrote this exhortation in support of traditional marriage between a husband and wife and the

hopeful possibility of children. Our Lenten series will explore the 8 chapters of the Pope’s exhortation in five Thursday evening presentations. This Thursday, March 9, from 7-9pm, in Keefer Hall, Dr. William Roberts, professor emeritus at the University of Dayton, will provide an overview and context for “The Joy of Love” and also explore some of the issues raised in Chapter 8 pertaining to divorce and remarriage in the Church. Professor Roberts is the author/editor of 15 books and over eighty scholarly articles. On Thursday, March 16, Geoffrey Schnieder, Director of Adult Catechesis and Evangelization, will present chapters 1 and 2 of the Pope’s exhortation, examining the biblical witness to family life and the contemporary challenges. Fr. Richard Infante, Pastor of OLG, on March 23, will treat chapters 3 and 4 about Jesus’ teaching on the human family, Catholic tradition and St. Paul’s “Hymn to Love” in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. On Thursday, March 30, Don and Erin Fontana will discuss chapters 5 and 6 about ‘Love made Fruitful,’ exploring the gift of children in the family, and the role of parents and grandparents. Don has been the Director of OLG ’s Religious Education Program (CCD) for the past 14 years. Erin, a lawyer by profession, and Don have 6 children. Our Lenten series will conclude on Thursday, April 6, 7-9pm, with Mike Aquilina’s presentation of chapter 7 in the Pope’s letter about the spirituality of the family and how the family plays an essential role in the moral development of children. Mike is the author of more than 50 books and 1,000 articles and a popular speaker on television, radio and Catholic campuses. Plan on enriching your understanding of marriage and family life by attending OLG’s 5-part Lenten Series on “The Joy of Love.” Fr. Richard Infante, Pastor
