With our chapter’s summer break ending, I would like to welcome you to our regular calendar of events, as well as opportunities to serve. First, I would like to congratulate you all for supporting our chapter operations in 2016 resulting in our chapter receiving the 2016, 5 Star Level of Excellence award. Please see the membership section for the letter of congratulations from the national MOAA president In reality, this letter should have been addressed to our previous chapter president,Tim Holme, who guided our chapter over the past few years, submitted our award applications and taught me about chapter operations. Thank you Tim for a job well done! My goal is to continue our tradition of attaining this award level in future years. Our chapter has been busy this summer. In July, we had our Summertime Blues luncheon. Our chapter successfully tested the new name badge ordering protocol and I encourage you to update your name badges with the new MOAA emblem. July ended with the sad news of the death of one of our members, LCDR Robert Greathouse, USN (Ret). We honor Robert with a reprint of his obituary (see Membership Section). We offer his wife Judith, our prayers and encouragement as well as welcome her to our chapter as a surviving spouse chapter member. In August, Jack Brown, George Hausold, Ron Lundberg and myself represented our chapter at the Citrus County School District teacher assembly honoring veterans. Terri Harrison, Ron Lundberg and myself, along with representatives of two other MOAA chapters, met with Congressman Daniel Webster of the 11 th Congressional District (see Legislative Corner). New member, Dave Bushnell, was featured on the Chronicle newspapter front page for his helicopter pilot work with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (see Membership Section). In September, our operations secretary, Merrill Schlegel, has lined up Ms. Debbie Selsavage of Coping with Dementia, LLC for the September 14 th chapter meeting. I invite you (you may bring friends and potential members) to attend this meeting on this important subject. All of our chapter meetings will require an online reservation so we have the proper number of wait staff on hand. Discussion

Bob Bienvenue gave a brief background on MOAA membership and a count of the “constituents”’ we serve through our advocacy mission in Florida (approx. 880,000).

Paul Hauser addressed the Repeal Sequestration message in the MOAA point paper.

The congressman acknowledged that the impact from caps imposed by sequestration are onerous and contribute to the delays in passing timely funding bills because of the contentiousness in debates about spending priorities. At the same time he was not positive about any resolution of this situation.

His ideological stance on this issue is that Congress must control spending increases without any tax increases. He also predicted that a likely CR at the end of September would kick the can down the road until December for fully funding DoD.

For the record Webster did not sign on to the letter sent to Speaker Ryan on May 2, 2107 by 141 Republican Representatives urging him to bring a measure to the floor repealing sequestration for national defense. He also has not signed on to co-sponsor HR 1441 Repeal Sequestration for Defense Act.

Mark Bodenheim addressed the Prevent Disproportional Tricare Fee Hikes message in the MOAA point paper.

The Congressman expressed his support of the provisions in the approved House NDAA regarding Tricare and acknowledged the significant increases that would be imposed by the Senate version.

He predicted that the provisions in the House version would prevail in Conference and in any Omnibus funding Bill that might come from the compromises that eventually will be agreed to.

Mark emphasized that previous legislation pegged increases to the percent annual COLAs – and urged that continue to be the philosophy that guides any changes in the future.

Carol Burgess addressed the Eliminate the “Widow’s Tax” message in the MOAA point paper.

The Congressman stated he was very aware of this issue and was sympathetic. BUT he has not signed on the HR 846 and likely would not – he has not supported similar bills in previous years.

The Congressman expressed concern that issues similar to this one come up frequently and there needs to be more fiscal discipline by Congress in deciding to fund these corrections so as not to contribute to raising the debt faster than the course Congress is already on.

Bob Bienvenue addressed the major discrepancies between the House approved NDAA and the SASC Bill yet to be debated/voted on by the full Senate:

2.4 % vs 2.1 % pay raise in Senate version

Significant increases in enrollment fees for under age 65 retirees and co-pays for Pharmacy prescriptions in Senate version

Reductions to BAH in Senate version

The Congressman reiterated that he believes it is unlikely that these Senate provisions would prevail and there is not enough time on the legislative calendar to engage in collegial debate in conference, so he suggested to us that the House Bill would be taken-up on the floor in the Senate.

As the team departed Bob Bienvenue thanked the Congressman for his collaboration with Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY) on HR 1796 “Lift the Relocation Burden from Military Spouses Act”. Bob also thanked the staff for the letter from Congressman Webster that was read by Cindy Brown of his staff at the dedication ceremony for the new Purple Heart Society Monument earlier in the week at The Villages Veterans Memorial Park.

If you go to the National MOAA website (http://www.moaa.org/), it is surprising all the information that you can find there. If you go to the Site Map (http://www.moaa.org/Sitemap/ ), you can read in plain text the links of the many directions to find information. The Tech Tactics article below was taken from the MOAA website. (see author and link below).

HOW TO BACK UP YOUR COMPUTER DATA

Reid Goldsborough, MOAA, August 10th 2017

The often repeated yet still sometimes ignored advice to prevent loss of important computer data and files is to back up. There now is one more reason for you to have no excuse to lose data, thanks to Google recently upgrading its backup tools.

Google's Backup and Sync app automates the process of backing up your files to the cloud. By copying files over the internet, even if you experience a disaster at your location such as a fire or flood that destroys all of your hardware, your data will survive.

Available for both Windows PCs and Macs, Google Backup and Sync replaces the old Google Drive and Google Photos uploaders. All you have to do is download the app, create a free Google account if you don't already have one or sign into your existing account, and designate which folders you want automatically backed up.

Google's service works similarly to services such as Microsoft OneDrive, Apple's iCloud Drive, and Dropbox except you have 15 gigabytes of space to use for free, more than most others, before you have to pay for a subscription. Subscriptions start at $1.99 a month for 100 gigabytes of storage. Any

email you store from Gmail or files from Google Docs, Google Sheets, or Google Slides count against this limit as well.

You still can manually copy files through your web browser to Google Drive or Google Photos without downloading and using the app, with the same limit of 15 gigabytes of free storage applying. If you choose the option that lets Google Photos compress your pictures to save storage space, they won't count against your storage limit. Along with your PC, you can back up data from a smartphone, camera, or other device.

In addition to cloud backup services, other backup methods still are viable options today. It makes sense to use more than one method and more than one service of any given method in case of glitches. Carefulness and redundancy are the twin pillars of disaster prevention and recovery.

Other methods include using a backup program stored on your computer to automatically back up financial records, family photos, and other files that can't be replaced onto an external hard drive, USB drive, writable DVD disc, or backup tape. Recommended programs include Time Machine, which comes bundled for free with Macs; Backupper Standard for Windows PCs; and Acronis True Image for Windows power users. Among other things, you can preselect files or folders you want backed up and at what times.

Even without using such a program, you manually can copy such files to one of these backup media using Windows Explorer.

These days, there's typically no reason to do a full system backup to an external drive, network drive, or other backup media to avoid having to manually reinstall your operating system and your programs in the event of problems.

You probably already have a backup of Windows on your hard disk. Using Windows' Recovery tool provides you with a factory-fresh reset in the event your copy of Windows is corrupted. Easier than that, you can use Windows' System Restore to see if rolling back to an earlier update of Window will get things working again quickly. The fastest option of all, if you're experiencing problems with your computer, is to turn it off then turn it back on again, which more times than not is all that's needed.

But hardware does sometimes fail. You should prepare now for the chance of your hard drive crashing if there's a possibility you won't be buying a new computer afterward that comes with Windows. Among other things, you can run Microsoft's media-creation tool.

This places a copy of your version of Windows (Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10) onto a flash drive provided the flash drive has 5 gigabytes of free space and provided you have your Windows 25-character product key.

Buying a new copy of Windows is another possibility. Among the places you can get it is Dell Home, which currently is selling Windows 10 Pro on a USB drive for $199.99.

If you're using web-based programs such as Google Mail and Google Docs, there's nothing to reinstall. With a new computer or new hard drive, you just sign back in. Other programs usually can be re-downloaded and reinstalled, provided you have their product keys.
