One can imagine the great feeling of liberation experienced by the yidden when they were finally freed from slavery after so many years. Would it have been so terrible if a dog had barked at them when they were leaving? We see from here that even though the irritation experienced would have been slight under the circumstances, it would have nevertheless still been a blot on their joy. From here we can learn that when someone is experiencing a joyous occasion, we should be careful not to say or do anything that would decrease his joy.

A person might have just bought a new house and feels very happy about it. At that time don’t needlessly point out the drawbacks of that house. A person just got married and is very happy, don’t voice any pessimistic comments that could cause a tinge of pain. Some people have a tendency to make statements that deflate a person’s high feelings. They might be motivated by envy, or they could be simply insensitive. Allow others to savor their good fortune. Don’t be like a barking dog and cause others irritation.

Whether it’s fighting the flu and respiratory disorders or combating tonsillitis and urinary tract infections, horseradish is a condiment that can help keep you healthy. Used to treat a wide variety of ailments over centuries, nearly every part of the horseradish plant seems to have some medicinal value. Tea made from its root has been used to help bring up mucus and other material from the lungs, while tea brewed from its flowers can be used to fight the common cold. A poultice can also be made of its roots to externally treat joint discomfort. In addition, raw leaves of horseradish also fulfill a purpose as a natural analgesic (pain killer) and, pressed against the forehead, can eliminate headache pain. Furthermore, an infusion of horseradish has known antibiotic properties, which have been proven effective against pathogenic fungi.

Glucosinolates and CancerHorseradish contains significant amounts of cancer-fighting compounds called glucosinolates, which increase the liver’s ability to detoxify carcinogens and may suppress the growth of tumors. Although broccoli, brussels sprouts, and other cruciferous vegetables also contain these compounds, horseradish has up to 10 times more glucosinolates than broccoli.

According to Cornell University, vegetables containing glucosinolates and their derivatives appear to help protect against rectal and colon cancer, while also enhancing the activity of several liver enzymes used in detoxification processes.

Sinusitis, Urinary Tract Infections and Other Health BenefitsJuice or sauce extracted from horseradish root has been used effectively to relieve sinus discomfort. The traditional treatment for sinusitis is to “take a half teaspoonful of grated horseradish sauce without dilution both morning and afternoon. Do not drink anything or eat for at least ten minutes after the dose. There will be a powerful feeling in the head, followed by a sensation of the sinuses clearing, sometimes accompanied with sweating

and perhaps tearing.”

Due to its antibiotic properties, horseradish can also be used to treat urinary tract infections (UTI) and destroy bacteria in the throat that can cause bronchitis, coughs and related problems.

A mixture of horseradish vinegar has been used effectively to treat seborrhea (dandruff).

Horseradish is an agent that stimulates blood flow below and to the surface of the skin. As such, this action makes the herb effective in poultices and as a very effective liniment or massaging agent to relieve muscular aches and pains, painful arthritic and rheumatic joints, and chronic rheumatism. As an external rub, horseradish has been used to relieve chest congestion

This desert gives some color and flair to the Pesach table. The kids will certainly love it, and rest assured, so will the adults!Ingredients:Grape Juice Sorbet:1 1/2 c water1 c sugar1 1/2 c grape juice6 1/2 T lemon juice

Orange Sorbet:1 1/2 c water 1 1/4 c sugar1 1/2 c orange juice6 1/2 T lemon juice Directions: Begin with the grape juice layer.Place sugar and water in a pot and bring to a boil. Add grape juice.Bring to a boil again. Remove from flame and let cool.Pour into 9x13 inch pan , cover and freeze until firm, which should be at least 4 hours. Scoop sorbet into food processor and blend (with S blade) until smooth but still frozen. Return to pan and freeze.Repeat with orange juice mixture. Once it is blended, pour on top of grape juice mixture. Make sure that first layer is frozen well before pouring second layer.
