When something is bashert for a certain individual, there is no way another can take it away from him. This concept should ideally provide us with a strong sense of security and the ability to live without the constant fear that someone might take what is ours.

The following story illustrates the consequences of not being secure with what we have.

A horse once trotted down to a beautiful crystal clear river to take a drink. As he quenched his thirst, he noticed the shadow of another horse also coming for a drink. Uh oh, if my friend starts drinking from this water, who knows if there will be any left for me?, thought the horse. In a desperate effort to shoo the other horse away, he began kicking his hooves in the water, gradually blackening what was once a crystal clear river. After some kicking, the horse realized that his competitor had indeed left but… he remained alone with a lot of black, muddy, unenticing water to drink.

In life, we accomplish more for ourselves when we focus on what we have and how to utilize it to our best advantage, rather than focusing on what other might be taking from us.

In Nach we learn about Iyav, who suffered greatly during his life. Once he cried out to Hashem, “Perhaps a wind blew and my name איוב was exchanged with the word ”?(which in Hebrew means enemy) , אויבIyav was implying that perhaps Hashem mistook him for his enemy and that was why he was going through such pain. Hashem rebuked him for his remarks, telling him that “for each and every single strand of hair on the human head I created an individual pore, so that no hair should take any nutrients meant for another hair. And you think that I mistook Iyav for Oiyiev?”

If Hashem put so much thought into each single strand of hair then surely He looks out for each of us, His precious children, and gives us exactly what we need. No one can take that which Hashem has destined for us to have.

Gett ing Vitamin D from the sun

In our previous articles we explored the many health benefits provided by the sun, and discussed how there is a lot of misinformation and misconceptions about the harmful effects (or lack thereof) of the sun on our health. Much of the health benefits of the sun are due to the vitamin D it helps our bodies produce. In this article we will elaborate a little on the subject of vitamin D and sunlight.

Vitamin D, as many people may be aware, is one of the most vital nutrients in our body. It is associated with almost all diseases known to mankind. Every cell in our body has vitamin D receptors. This fact alone shows us how essential vitamin D is to our lives.

Unlike other nutrients, which we mostly get either through the food we eat or as it is synthesized by our bodies, most of the vitamin D we get is synthesized through sunlight, more specifically when the UVB rays come in direct contact with our skin.

Most people today are deficient in this critically important vitamin. One of the main reasons is the avoidance of the sun and the use of sunscreens which block UVB rays, thus halting the production of vitamin D. There are also other factors such as obesity and general weak health that can deplete our vitamin D reserves.

The further away from the equator we are, the less exposure to the UVB rays we get. In the northern latitudes such as New York there are no UVB rays in the winter. This is due to the angle of the sun. Even in the summer there will only be UVB rays in middle of the day. As a general rule, if your shadow is longer then you are than you areprobably not being exposed to UVB rays.

When you get vitamin D directly from the sun, one benefit is that there is no way to overdose. Our body self regulates the amount of vitamin D produced by the sun, and the more you are exposed the less vitamin D

you will make. While supplements are very safe and it is hard to overdose, when you take massive daily doses, you still have the potential to build it up to toxic levels. The current upper limit is 10,000 iu daily.

To review the main points of the articles;

A- To get vitamin D from sunlight, we have to be exposed to sunlight mid-day when the sun is not at an angle.

B- In the winter there is no vitamin D producing rays in our regions.

C- The use of sun screen will disrupt vitamin D production.

D- Being exposed to the sun without sunscreen has to be done cautiously, by slowly building our tolerance to the sun.

Dressing:1 c mayonaise1/4 c water1/4 c vinigar1/4 c sugar1 tsp. mustard3 cloves garlicSalt and pepper to taste

Place all salad ingredients in a large bowl and toss. For the dressing, combine all dressing ingredients and blend. Pour over salad before serving.

Depending on how you like your salad, you might have some leftover dressing. As this is a very versatile dressing, it can be used with other salads as well, with great results.
