2019 - 2020 4-H Enrollment Timeline

October 1 - enrollment for 2019 - 2020 4-H Year will be open to all returning and

new 4-H youth and volunteers.

December 1- enrollment deadline for returning 4-H families and volunteers.

May 1- project add deadline to be eligible to exhibit at the county fair

Attention all middle school and high school 4-H’ers:

You are invited to join us for a 6-week Youth Leadership Program

facilitated by the Lawrence Toastmaster’s club.

It will include learning to:

organize thoughts (usually with 3 points)

speak sufficiently

eliminate words that diminish communication

evaluate with constructive suggestions

serve in various roles rotating each meeting to allow all members to

shine.

The weekly meetings will begin on Thursday, October 10th at the Dreher

Family 4-H Building on the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Dinner will be

served at 6:00 p.m. with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. and conclude

shortly after 7:30 p.m. Space is limited!

State Fair Entries

Pre-entered Kansas State Fair exhibits needing a ride, are due to the Extension office by

September 5 by 4:00 p.m.

Please remember to package your exhibit for safe travels to Hutchinson. Include plans, recipes,

etc. with your project(s). Due to limited space to transport entries, we cannot take large projects.

If you are personally taking non-livestock projects to the state fair, come to the Extension office to

pick-up your entry card(s).

4-H Robotics Space Tech Experience The Kansas 4-H SpaceTech Program and the Kansas Cosmosphere are

again teaming up to provide fun, hands-on and science-based programming

for Kansas 4-H Youth Development. This fourth program will feature “4-H

Drone and Robotics Olympics” The experience will begin Friday, October 4,

at 4 p.m., and will end on Saturday, October 5, 4 p.m. Cost will be $115

for youth between 9 -18 years old and all adult participants. All youth must have a designated

chaperone to attend. Parents, grandparents, other relatives, and guardians may chaperone their

own children/relatives. They may not chaperone other non-family members.

Participants will receive introduction education about drones and robots, then split between a robot

group and drone group, then continue training activities for each vehicle and finally, a team

competition with several challenges using both vehicles. Participants will learn how to program

robots and use sensors and understand how to pilot drones. There will also be a tour of the

Cosmosphere, a planetarium show, and a digital dome program. Registration also includes three

meals and an overnight stay.

Kansas 4-H Youth Leadership Council Application Process

Any Kansas 4-H member between the ages of 14 and 18 before January 1, 2020 may apply. This year's

KYLF delegation will elect representatives from the four extension program areas (NE, NW, SE, SW). Youth

Council members work to involve youth with K-State Research and Extension in promoting, developing,

implementing and evaluating Kansas Extension 4-H Youth Development programs in order to reflect the

needs and interests of youth in the state. Council members will also plan and conduct the Kansas Youth

Leadership Forum, Citizenship in Action, Campference and other events.

Application and photos are due on an online form on October 1 before 5 p.m. CST. Two letters of

reference must be postmarked on or before October 1 or they may be uploaded on the application site by

October 1 at 5 p.m. The signature page should be postmarked by October 1.

4-H Ambassador Program Are you at least a freshman in high school and have been in 4-H for a minimum of two

years? Do you enjoy sharing your 4-H story with others? Are you committed to

growing our 4-H program? If you answered yes to the previous questions, you should

consider applying to become a Douglas County 4-H Ambassador. The application

process includes a written application, a written recommendation letter, an interview

and a short speech. The application and recommendation are due to the Extension office by 5:00 pm on

October 1.

KAP Forms and Membership Pin Applications

All pin applications and KAP’s must be turned into community leaders for signatures and are due to

the Extension office by 5:00 pm October 1.Check with your club leader for club pin application and

KAP deadline. If you have questions about completing these forms, contact your community leader

or the Extension office.

2019 - 2020 4-H Club Officer Training

Save the Date! The Douglas County 4-H Council is hosting an Officer

Training for all 4-H Club Officers on Sunday, October 13 at 4:00 pm in the

Dreher Family 4-H Building. 4-H’ers will further develop their leadership

skills and gain knowledge about their role as a club officer and role model. Pizza will be served at

the conclusion of the meeting.

2021 Citizenship Washington Focus Informational Meeting

Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a citizenship program conducted by the National 4-H Council for high school youth ages 14 - 18. Participant must be 14 June of 2021.

Delegates will attend an eight day program in Washington D.C. where they will participate in hands-on workshops learning the democratic process and their role as citizens. 4-H’ers participate in civic workshops, committees and field trips before returning home to make positive changes in their own communities. To prepare for this our group meets monthly for about 18 months to raise money and gain further knowledge about local, county and state government and skills that will prepare them to be leaders in their communities. CWF not only strengthens young people’s understanding of the government’s civic process, it also boosts their leadership skills, communication skills and overall confidence. All applicants interested in the 2021 CWF experience, are required to attend an informational

meeting about the CWF Program on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at 7:00 pm in the north room of

the Dreher Family 4-H Building.

Applications are due to the Extension office by 5:00 p.m. on November 1!

County Achievement Celebration

Save the date! The County Achievement Celebration will be Sunday, November 3 in Brooklyn Hall at Enright Gardens at 2351 N 400 Rd, Edgerton, KS 66021. There will be a barbecue luncheon beginning at 12:30 p.m. with the awards ceremony to follow at 1:30 p.m.

Douglas County 4-H Council Scholarship Program The Douglas County 4-H Council is excited to announce a scholarship program. The Douglas County 4-H Council Scholarship Program was established to provide financial assistance to encourage 4-H’ers and adult volunteers to attend 4-H related conferences. Conference opportunities include but are not limited to: 4-H Camp, Campference, Discovery Days, KYLF, Kansas 4-H Volunteer Forum, adult trainings, etc. The funds used for this program are raised through the annual county fair 4-H concessions stand. The scholarship application is posted at http://www.douglas.k-state.edu/4-h/forms.html under the Scholarship Application heading. Return the completed form to the Extension office at least 14 days prior to the event registration deadline. Kansas 4-H Leadership Weekend -KYLF and KVF The Kansas Youth Leadership Forum and the Kansas 4-H

Volunteer Forum will be held November 23-24 at Rock Springs

4-H Center. KYLF is for youth ages 14-18 before January 1, 2020

and KVF is for all Kansas 4-H Volunteers. KYLF will feature

leadership workshops, Youth Council Elections, and opportunities to learn and have fun. The

Kansas Volunteer Forum will include a workshop with the Kansas Leadership Center, opportunities for networking and sharing resources.

Registration deadline is October 15, 2019 for both events at an early bird rate or before November 1 at the regular rate.
