Rebecca’s Revelation
Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ! I hope your Eastertide is
going well and you are finding ways to Practice Resurrection every day.
I am writing this the week prior to our potluck and discussion led by our Vision-
ary Leadership Team. I am excited to hear the thoughts of our members and
friends as we embark on this next chapter in our journey of faith together. I truly
believe that God’s Spirit often works in what we hear and share with others – even
when we do not realize at the time that it is God’s Spirit! Before we discern what
God might be calling us to in the near and distant future, we will be given the op-
portunity to name the things we have and do appreciate, value, and cherish about
Central Christian.
It is not a coincidence that as I was thinking of the things that I appreciate most
about CCC, I found a Clarion column I wrote ten years ago in which I had asked
someone what some of her favorite things about Central were. These were some of
that person’s responses:
“I like to turn the light on in the baptistery and see the lights on the
water.”
“When we have a baptism and kids put their fingers under the glass, I
like when Mom touches everybody’s fingers.”
“When I am in the sanctuary by myself, I like to pretend that I am
lighting the candles – but I don’t want to do it for real.”
“I liked being an angel in the Christmas pageant.”
“I love doing all kinds of things in Sunday school.”
“Sometimes Mom’s office is really busy because people come to talk to
her.”
“Mom lets me push the big garbage can in the parking lot when we
take out the trash.”
Before you brush off 5-year-old Lexi’s “favorite” things about the church, the
bottom line was that she felt loved, comfortable, and a part of the things that go on
in our faith community even then.
Knowing you are loved
Feeling comfortable and safe
A sense of belonging and importance
I pray that everyone who comes to Central experiences these things. What a
great foundation for whatever God has in mind for us next.
Many blessings and peace to you.
Rev. Rebecca Zelensky
WORSHIP
What is Pentecost?
According to the New Testament book of Acts, Pentecost is the day the Holy Spirit descended
upon the disciples of Jesus. Pentecost is the Greek name for Shavuot, the spring harvest festi-
val of the Israelites, which was being celebrated at the time the Holy Spirit “arrived.” Some
Christian denominations consider this to be the birthday of the church. For ancient Jews, Pen-
tecost was held 50 days after Passover; therefore, Christians observe Pentecost 7 weeks after
Easter Sunday - the 50th day after Easter inclusive of Easter Sunday. As Easter Sunday has no
fixed date, this makes Pentecost a moveable feast; this year Pentecost is May 20 while next
year Pentecost doesn’t happen until Jun 9, 2019!
Scholars believe that even if the Pentecost narrative is not literally true, it nonetheless signi-
fies an important event/experience in the early Church that enabled the rapid spread of Chris-
tianity. Within a few decades important congregations had been established in all major cities
of the Roman Empire.
The biblical narrative of Pentecost is found in Acts chapter 2. Peter’s sermon stresses Jesus’
resurrection and exaltation. Luke records that 120 followers of Christ (Acts 1:15) were present,
including the Twelve Apostles (Matthias was Judas' replacement), Jesus' mother Mary, other
female disciples and his brothers (Acts 1:14).
According to scripture, while those on whom the Spirit had descended were speaking in many
languages, the Apostle Peter stood up with the eleven and proclaimed to the crowd that this
event was the fulfillment of Hebrew prophecies. Acts 2:17 reads: "’And in the last days,' God
says, 'I will pour out my spirit upon every sort of flesh, and your sons and your daughters will
prophesy and your young men will see visions and your old men will dream dreams.’" Acts 2:41
reports: "Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were
added unto them about three thousand souls."
Peter stated that this event was the beginning of a continual outpouring that would be availa-
ble to all believers from that point on, Jews and Gentiles alike.
Come and celebrate Pentecost at Central Christian on Sunday, May 20 – and wear red, the li-
turgical color for the Holy Spirit!
Special Music for the Summer of 2018
As usual, the choir will be on sabbatical during the summer and we invite volunteers to contrib-
ute special talents that will help enhance our worship services during this time. Volunteers
may sign–up for the Sundays of May 13 through Sept 2. If you require an accompanist, Karen
Sagraves needs to be informed and have a copy of the music at least 2 weeks prior. If your gift
is vocal or instrumental and you are willing to have it be a part of the worship experience,
please add your name to the signup sheet at the Information Center at church or contact Karen
Sagraves. The musical offering should be something of a worshipful nature remembering that
it will be a part of a worship service. We look forward to hearing from our talented congrega-
tion over the summer!

Scripture is filled with stories of peo-
ple experiencing God in the beauty
and power of Creation. For thou-
sands of years, God’s people have
looked at the world around them to
learn about God’s presence in their
life. Camps are designed to bring
children and youth into the beauty of
creation and into the power of com-
munity. These intentional events are
divided by age, and often by special
focus.

CCC BIG Read Spending May with Luke
In the month of May, the CCC BIG Read will focus on the Gospel According to
Luke. This is my favorite gospel! Some of the most beloved biblical stories can be
found in this book written by the one we call Luke:
- The birth of Jesus that gives us many of the images we remember & incorporate every
Christmas
- The Good Samaritan
- The parable of the Prodigal (actually, many think Luke chapter 15 sums up the gospel per-
fectly)
- The 2 disciples and the Risen Christ on the Road to Emmaus (to name a handful…)
Luke is very clear about what he understands Jesus’ ministry and mission to be – the same min-
istry and mission we who follow him today have been called to fulfill: “to bring good news to the
poor…to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed
go free, to proclaim the year of God’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19)
Luke has 24 chapters. Read one chapter a day during the month of May and you will have time
to spare – or, time to go back and re-read your favorite parts!

APRIL 1, 2018 EASTER PHOTOS: It was a cold,
wet morning as we gathered for our Easter Sunrise
Service. As the sun rose we rejoiced in our Risen
Lord! We continued the Easter celebration at
our 9:30 worship with the baptism of one of our
young people. It was a wonderful service!
