What caused the Civil War?Cause number 1: Slavery. Many people in the North wanted to abolish (end) slavery and prevent slavery from spreading to new states and territories. The Southern States were opposed to abolishing slavery. What caused the Civil War? Cause number 2: The debate over slavery created a lot of tension between the North and the South. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln, an known abolitionist (person who wants to end slavery) was elected president. Many Southern States Seceded (separated) from the United States and formed a new government called the confederacy.
