AUGUST 2012

From The Pastor

We are now well into the summer season and we all know that the weather has been brutally hot.

Yet, life goes on and so does the work of the church.

The summer months are usually tough ones for the church. Many go away on vacation, and as a

result, not only does worship attendance go down, but so does our financial giving.

So, let me share this gentle reminder with you. As you make your vacation plans, please

consider giving your financial gifts in advance. Let’s do our best to meet the church’s budget on a

timely basis. Also, now that we are more than half way through the year, it’s a good time to check

up on our financial commitment to the church.

Paul shared these words with the Corinthian church; words I believe that are still relevant for us

today. “I think it would be a good thing for you…to carry through what you intended.

Finish it, then, as well as you can, and show that you can complete what you set out to do

with as much efficiency as you showed readiness to begin” (2 Corinthians 8: 10-11).

Enjoy the rest of the summer!!

Blessings,

Livingstone Dore

A TRANSPORTATION TEAM

is being created in an effort to provide transportation to medical appointments for members of our congregation. Art Long has agreed to serve as the coordinator of this

committee. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to assist Art with this endeavor. As soon as we get a team together, we will let you know so that scheduling can begin. This is an important ministry for our church, as some of our members are unable to

drive. Please give Art a call on 746-9296

if you will be able to help.

BAZAAR EXTRAORDINAIRE III Our upcoming BAZAAR EXTRAORDINAIRE III is less than three months away and we are getting into full swing. Please be certain OCTOBER 19th and 20th are marked on your calendar. We are going to need everyone's assistance to have a successful bazaar.

We will be using the fellowship hall for our vendors, bake sale and our silent auction . We hope you will begin bringing in items for our SILENT AUCTION which is being coordinated by Irene Couch and Martha Sherrod. We will have baskets folks will bid on, as well as gift cards/certificates, paintings, a hand-made quilt, hand- made throw, etc. Some baskets being planned are baby, chocolate, kitchen, apple, wine/cheese, made in Virginia, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. Please bring any items

we can include in one of these baskets or items that can be auctioned as an individual item. We all get "gifts" at one time or another that we know we will never use. If you would like to share these with us, I am sure we will find a place to use them in our silent auction. (new items only) Don't forget to ask for gift certificates from your hairdresser, your favorite restaurant, oil and lube, manicure/pedicure, grocery store, bakery, etc. More details will be forthcoming. Friday night will be a chicken parmesan "to go" dinner and Saturday will be burgers, dogs, and of course, BRUNSWICK STEW.

This event is going to be such FUN! Don't miss it! !

How long have you worked for Chamberlayne Heights United MethodistHow long have you worked for Chamberlayne Heights United MethodistHow long have you worked for Chamberlayne Heights United MethodistHow long have you worked for Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist? I have been a part of the Chamberlayne Heights Staff since July 2011. It has been a complete

year since I first began my work as Office Administrator, and it has been a joy to work for

this church family.

Why were you interested in working as an Office Administrator for CHUMC?Why were you interested in working as an Office Administrator for CHUMC?Why were you interested in working as an Office Administrator for CHUMC?Why were you interested in working as an Office Administrator for CHUMC?

I have always enjoyed clerical work, and my educational background has prepared me to work

in a ministerial setting. I have a B.A. in Christian Studies, and a huge heart for serving the

Lord. Everyday of the work week I wake up knowing that I will get to serve in ministry in the

humble position of Office Administrator, and I am greatly blessed.

What do you like about serving the Chamberlayne Heights UMC Community? What do you like about serving the Chamberlayne Heights UMC Community? What do you like about serving the Chamberlayne Heights UMC Community? What do you like about serving the Chamberlayne Heights UMC Community?

I have loved getting to know the people of Chamberlayne Heights. They are some of the most

welcoming and kind people I have ever met.

What do you believe CHUMC offers the surrounding community? What do you believe CHUMC offers the surrounding community? What do you believe CHUMC offers the surrounding community? What do you believe CHUMC offers the surrounding community?

I believe Chamberlayne Heights is a beacon of hope to the surrounding community. We do a

lot of missions and outreach work, such as, after school tutoring, Stop Hunger now, Day Camp, and we donate to many

organizations. Not only that, but the congregation of CHUMC is one of the most dedicated, loving, and caring congregations I

have ever seen. They have a great heart for serving others, and it has been a great joy to help in their ministry.

What church events do you most look forward to throughout the year? What church events do you most look forward to throughout the year? What church events do you most look forward to throughout the year? What church events do you most look forward to throughout the year?

This year I will be looking forward to the Bazaar! There should be some really great crafts, and delicious food. Come out

and join us on October 19th and 20th! Also, I am a huge fan of CHUMC’s scrumptious Easter eggs. I was able to try them for

the first time this Easter, and, oh my word, BEST Easter eggs EVER. How can people get involved with CHUMC?How can people get involved with CHUMC?How can people get involved with CHUMC?How can people get involved with CHUMC?

CHUMC is a great place to get involved. There are so many wonderful opportunities to plug in here, and to serve others. There

is always a need for helping hands, and caring hearts. If you have never visited here before, we would love to meet you!

If you’ve already visited, we would love to help you get more involved by introducing you to our Pastor, Choir Director, Bell

Choir Director, and most importantly the members of our church.

When you aren't at CHUMC what are your favorite past times? When you aren't at CHUMC what are your favorite past times? When you aren't at CHUMC what are your favorite past times? When you aren't at CHUMC what are your favorite past times?

When I’m not working, I have my hand in a little bit of everything. My absolute favorite past times are spending time with my

family and loved ones, and doing anything outdoors. My husband and I love to go backpacking, hiking, kayaking, skiing, and are

usually busy working out at the gym. I also enjoy crafting, cooking, reading, and singing.

The Circuit Rider has started including it’s “Spotlight” article. We will be placing a “spotlight” on individuals around the church, and on ministries that we feel should

be recognized within the community.

In order to run this article, we will need your help every month. Let us know if there is a person or ministry that you would like to highlight for the next month.

Please contact the church office, if you would like to recognize a ministry or someone, with a small paragraph explaining about the individual/ministry and why they

have impacted your life. If possible, include a picture with your paragraph.

We are available at [email protected] and 266-3551

CHANCELOR CHOIR

Autumn is around the corner, and that means our choir will start rehearsing again in preparation for the season to begin! You've heard us sing on Sunday mornings during the church year, and if you've thought that looked like fun, you'd be right! We have a great time as we sing, raising our voices in praise to God. If you enjoy singing, whether it's along with the radio or with friends, come and join us on Wednesday nights and see what the CHUMC choir is all about! Rehearsals are Wednesday nights starting at 7pm, and our first choir rehearsal is August 22nd. If you'd like to sing with the choir just for the Christmas Cantata, join us for the beginning of rehearsal every week, 7 - 7:30pm, when we focus on the cantata. If you have any questions or want to learn more, see Kristen Schussler after the service, or send her an email at [email protected].

CHOIR WORKSHOP

The choir will be having a workshop on August 18th from 9am to 12pm to kick off our fall music season. If you've ever considered

being a part of the Chancel Choir or the Celebration Singers,

we'd like to invite you to join us for a morning of singing and

fellowship! Among the activities planned, we'll be taking a first

look at the fall anthems and this year's Christmas Cantata. The

day will end with a cookout on the lawn at noon, where those

interested in joining the choirs can chat with current members,

and those interested in the Celebration Singers can participate

in an organizational meeting then as well.

For questions or more information, see Kristen Schussler after

service or email her at [email protected]. We

hope to see you there!

What is Stewardship? To define stewardship one must first understand what it means to be a steward. The word Steward refers to the responsibility given to someone to manage or administer whatever resource(s) placed in their care. “…think about it this way – as servants of Christ and managers of God’s secrets. In this kind of situation, what is expected of a manager is that they prove to be faithful (1Corinthians 4: 1-2)CEB.”

“We are all stewards of God’s mysteries – every one of us. We may be effective stewards or not so effective stewards, but nevertheless, we are stewards all the time. It is not an option. “

So, Stewardship is about our relationship to God. “It is our daily human response to what God has done and is doing as well as our response to what we anticipate God will do in this world.”

How does being a steward affect your responsibility to CHUMC? Note: Stewardship- Guidelines for Leading Your Congregation
