Dear Brothers & Sisters, We are coming to the conclusion of our Lenten journey and now we enter into Holy Week, indeed the most solemn and sacred days of the year for us as Catholic Christians. This has not been the Lent any of us expected, and these days have demanded much more from us than simply giving up a favorite treat, donating the cost of a cup of coffee, or committing to a few minutes of additional prayer every day. This Lent, we have been compelled to make real sacrifices that hurt, but that also bring an opportunity for deeper conversion and growth. This depends on the attitude we take towards them. It seems inevitable that we will also experience this Holy Week in a unique way. Perhaps our suffering in these days, for most of us trivial when compared with His, but for some profound and permanent, helps us to see more clearly just what Jesus did when He took upon Himself the darkness of our sin and the evil in the world. Walking the road to Calvary with Jesus, maybe we can appreciate more deeply how heavy that Cross was, and that He persevered to the end out of love for us and desire for our ultimate good. At the end of this Holy Week, of course, our observance will culminate in the celebration of the greatest and most impactful event in the history of the world, the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Surely, Easter will not feel like very much of a celebration this year, without coming together in the Church to receive the sacraments and sing the familiar hymns, without the customary visits with extended family and friends, and perhaps with a less abundant feast on the table. But here, too, is an opportunity to remember that the holiday is not about the parties, visits, and food. It is about the love of God which conquers all things, even death, and which has been given to each of us personally and all of us as Church, through our Baptism into His death and resurrection. As we experience deepening fatigue from the anxiety and isolation of quarantine, this reminder is just what we need in order to persevere. Even though almost everything seems to have been canceled, the life of the Church has not been canceled, because the love of God has not been canceled. The Resurrection of Christ from the dead has not been canceled, it has happened once and for all, and we are called to participate in it as always. These days summon us to find new expressions of our Easter faith, new ways to live in community, new avenues to put the Gospel into practice. If we answer

the call, we will emerge from this crisis stronger and even better prepared to proclaim the Good News to the world. On behalf of my brother Oratorians and our parish staff, a blessed Holy Week to you and those you love. May the Lord keep you safe and bring you to the true joy of Easter.

In Christ & St. Philip, Fr. Jeff

First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 In a tone of quiet sadness, Isaiah describes the buffets and insults given to the Suffering Servant. The passage ends on a note of hope. Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 In exultant tones, Paul tells the Philippians to rejoice because Christ became man, died on the cross, rose from the dead, and sits triumphantly at the right hand of the Father. Gospel: Matthew 26:14—27:66 This is the solemn narrative of the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. Matthew recounts the treachery and betrayal of Judas and then describes the events of the Last Supper, culminating in the institution of the Eucharist. Jesus endures the Agony in the Garden; he is then brought before Caiaphas and Pilate and condemned to death. After His resurrection, the centurions shouted, “Clearly this was the Son of God!” Our Religious Education School year has come to an end. If you have any questions, please contact the Religious Education Office at 908-725-6339 in addition to checking your email for updates.

until further notice. According to directives issued by Bishop Checchio on March 16, public Masses are temporarily suspended in the Diocese of Metuchen until further notice. The Oratorian Fathers will be celebrating Mass privately, fulfilling the scheduled Mass intentions and praying for a timely conclusion of the crisis. We encourage everyone to make use of the various opportunities to view Mass on television or streaming online, and to make frequent spiritual communions. This is also an opportune time to explore the Church’s rich devotional tradition and to devote more time to reading Scripture. In addition, Governor Murphy's executive order on March 21 has resulted in the temporary closure of our church and parish office to the public. St. Ann Church, Raritan, is open for private prayer weekdays, 11 am - 3 pm. Confession will be available at St. Ann's on Friday, from 6:30-7:30 pm. Please take care to observe the prescribed precautions when visiting the church. SECOND COLLECTIONS – this weekend, April 4/5 for the Annual Retirement Collection for Diocesan Clergy. This collection is exclusively for the benefit of our 28 retired diocesan priests. We have all been blessed to have been the beneficiaries of their sacred ministry: countless Holy Masses, baptisms, weddings and confessions. They bring us the healing hand of Christ at the hour of death and they mourn with us when they bury our dead. Where would we be without their sacrificial gift of their lives for the Church? All funds raised through this collection will be used exclusively to support our retired priests who reside at the Maria Regina Residence in Somerset. ALSO, next weekend April 11/12 for the Needy of our Parish. {The single beneficiary of the Good Friday collection is the Commissariat of the Holy Land which is responsible for the preservation of the shrines of the Holy Land and the Sacred Congregation of Oriental Churches.}

Holy Trinity now offers Online Giving through eCatholic; an easy option for donating to the Sunday Collection. It’s

simple. Visit holytrinitynj.org/donate and follow the easy registration instructions.

The Parish Prayer Chain is a group of parishioners that regularly pray for your needs. Should a need for prayer to arise, please call Mary Raimondo at 908-725-7369 or E-mail: [email protected]. Collection of the RICE BOWLS will take place once we return to Public Mass. The Giving Basket is cancelled at this time…

Thank you for your concern and inquiries.

"We're never alone when we pray. We're always with God. We're always with the angels and saints of heaven. We're always with one another, what we call the communion of saints..."

Cardinal Dolan added, "And that's important to remember because a lot of people feel isolated, kind of scared that they're by themselves...just to know that God is with us... Emmanuel, God with us, is an important name of God to remember in these troubled days." Cardinal Dolan said the faithful should honestly pray, "Lord, I'm scared. I'm having a tough time...one thing I don't have to worry about is the fact that you're here with me...that everything works together for the good of those who believe."

-Cardinal Timothy Dolan "Be at Peace" by St. Francis de Sales Do not look forward in fear to the changes in life; rather, look to them with full hope that as they arise, God, whose very own you are, will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand it, God will carry you in His arms. Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same understanding Father who cares for you today will take care of you then and every day, He will either shield you from suffering or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations. Amen. Should you know of someone in need of non-perishable items, please call the Rectory at 908-526-2394, especially during this difficult time.

The Knitting Club meets every Wednesday evening at 6:00pm in the Church Basement/Classroom #3. Supplies are available. For information please call

2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Stepping Forward in Faith: Grace in Action

Through your support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal you help those in our diocese whose needs are the greatest — the poor, the homeless, and those struggling with illness or grief. Among other needed pastoral ministries, your gift also supports the formation of seminarians and enhances the work of campus ministry through the Catholic Center at Rutgers University. The many pastoral, educational and charitable ministries of the Diocese of Metuchen would not be possible without a generous contribution from every household. Please prayerfully consider a gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal to help our parish reach its goal. If we can exceed our goal, 50% of the amount collected over goal will be returned to us in the form of a parish rebate. Just as important as our financial goal is our goal of reaching 100% participation. Every gift, no matter the size, is important and greatly appreciated. Thank you.

To date, the Development Office has received pledges totaling $28,813.23 and payments totaling $21,368.08 from 104 parishioners. This represents 44.3% of your $65,000.00 goal. Thank you for your efforts. Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
