WELCOME to . . . THE CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE

Dear Parishioners, Recently a Vatican announcement was made that informed the world that Mother Teresa of Calcutta, a well known person on the international level, would be canonized a saint on September 4, 2016. Mother Teresa has often been described as a citizen of the world. Here's how she once described herself: 'By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus.’ How very fitting that within the Jubilee Year of Mercy this woman of faith and minister of mercy will now be enrolled in the canon of saints for the good of the Church. She is a contemporary and perfect model of living to the fullest - both the seven spiritual works of mercy as well as the seven corporal works of mercy, all to an exemplary degree. She washed the wounded, cared for the sick and dying. Some of her former students joined her over time. She spread her work throughout India. The Vatican took note of her charity and encouraged her to open various organizations in other parts of the world until they were on every inhabited continent. In 1979, she received the Nobel Peace Prize, which drew the attention of the media to the demure nun in blue and white. By the time of her death, 4,000 Mother Teresa's Sisters worked under her at 610 foundations in 123 countries. Before she died, Mother Teresa met one last time with Pope John Paul II and then returned to Kolkata to spend her final days with people close to her. She died on September 5, 1997, and was given a state funeral by the government of India. Analyzing her deeds and achievements, John Paul II asked: "Where did Mother Teresa find the strength and perseverance to place herself completely at the service of others? She found it in prayer and in the silent contemplation of Jesus Christ, his Holy Face, his Sacred Heart." I still remember my short visit with Mother Teresa many years ago, when I was a junior at the College of St. Thomas and also a seminarian at St. John Vianney Seminary. In the Fall of 1972, a few of us from the seminary went to the Church of St. Olaf in downtown Minneapolis where Mother Teresa was scheduled to meet a group of people who were co-workers with her religious order, while she was visiting in the Twin Cities. I had the opportunity to approach her and introduce myself as a seminarian and to ask for her prayers. In her immediate presence, I felt a certain joy within me to be so close to someone holy and wholly devoted to God and her missionary apostolate, which was to serve the poorest of the poor. I was amazed that someone so small in stature and seemingly frail of frame could have such strength of faith, of character, and determination to do the Will of God in her life. She was a great inspiration to me then, and I am amazed to think even now how privileged I was to have had the opportunity to be with, speak to, and hold the gentle hand of a “saint-in-the-making” almost 44 years ago. I very much look

forward to watching the ceremony of her canonization in early September and to ask once again her loving intercession, especially now for the Church of St. George and its parishioners during our Centennial Year. While on the topic of shaking hands with future saints, when I was on a study sabbatical in Rome at the North American College, which is the major seminary for the dioceses of the United States, my fellow sabbatical priests and I had the opportunity for a private audience with Pope John Paul II, in the Apostolic Palace at the Vatican, on March 19, 1995. Each one of us forty priests had the opportunity, for just a few moments, to approach His Holiness, the Holy Father, and state our name and diocese of incardination. When my turn came, I remember approaching the Holy Father, who was standing with open hands and showing a warm and gracious smile. It was obvious that while the Parkinson’s illness was limiting his movement and his health in general, nevertheless, his bright eyes seemed so very alert, both sparkling and penetrating at each priest standing before him. To this very day, more than 21 years later, I still have that special photo of our gracious reception, with our hands clasped together, placed now on my fireplace mantelpiece. I often look at the photo and remember with a smile that it was another great privilege for me to also be introduced to this saintly pope. Imagine that! That I have personally met two canonized saints in my lifetime! May their holy intercessions for me and all priests be constant in our vocations to serve the Church faithfully and generously. St. Teresa of Calcutta and St. John Paul II, pray for us. Gratefully in Christ,

Fr. Mark Juettner, Pastor

Call 651-291-4545 for more information or to register. Hello parishioners! I am excited to share what I have learned about the history of the

Church of St. George. Please get in touch with me if you have any information or memories that would add to the story of our parish. My email is [email protected] and my phone number is 952-913-3136. The 1960’s was an era of growth and change in the Catholic Church and at St. George. The Second Vatican

Council ushered in many adaptations to allow Catholics throughout the world to grow and interact more deeply with their Catholic faith in the modern era, especially through the liturgy. For example, the use of Latin to say mass as well as the priest facing away from the people was discontinued. Now Mass could be said in the languages of the faithful and the priests turned to face their parishioners. The laity could now actively participate in the liturgy and sing music that suited contemporary tastes to celebrate the Word of God and the Holy Eucharist. This significant upgrade greatly helped the Catholic Church to adjust to the needs of Catholics in the modern era as well as welcome the involvement of the laity in more parts of religious life. In the early 1960’s at St. George, the original church was quickly becoming too small to serve adequately its growing parish. Because of this parish growth, St. George was in a unique position to experiment in designing a contemporary Catholic church that would reflect the radical changes to be brought in by Vatican II. Land on south Watertown Road and County Road 146 was purchased for the new church from William Strong in 1957. In June 1959, Archbishop William O. Brady ordered the construction of a new church for St. George. Pledges from a majority of the parishioners were received to start collecting funds for a new church. On June 21, 1960, St. George kicked off a fund drive for raise money for the construction of the new church. Stayed tuned for the story of the construction and the design of the new church.
