The Christmas Tree• The tree was traditionally decorated

Mârşa• The etymology is lost in time. The Romanian word mârşă -

meaning "lure" or "bait", has probably nothing to do with the name origin.According to 1901 edition of Marele Dicționar Geografic al Romîniei, Mârşa was in the 19th century a rural commune located on Drîmbovnic Valley, part of Neajlov District, Vlașca County. Also, former property of Bolintineanu family - the poet DumitruBolintineanu being even born in there, Mârşa was later divided between Mîrşia-din-Deal, property of R. Dumitriu and Mîrşia-din-Vale, property of Nicolae Cioflic.

Carol Tradition• In traditional Romanian rural society,

preparations for carols started well in advance (sometimes weeks) before Christmas. The village youth (usually boys) would begin to form groups in different places and designate a leader in order to practice singing in unison. These groups are called cete de colindători, and their numbers vary from region to region. Then, starting on Christmas Eve, the groups would go to different houses and begin singing.

Goat game tradition
