The Chantry School Newsletter Dear Parents/Carer Thank you to all those parents who re- sponded to our consultation on expanding the school to accept up to 6 classes of entry from 2018 onwards. This is in response to the increased need for places at secondary level identified by Worcestershire County Council. This is due to both demographic growth and the increased house building within our catchment area. Our consultation response has been emailed to all parents, but can also be found on our website at www.chantryschool.com. Our next step in this process is to gain approval from the DfE and to begin work with architect firms to re-model aspects of the site and build some new facilities. This is an exciting step, and one we must take in order to continue to serve our community in the future. We will continue to keep you informed, and wel- come all comments you may have. I am sure many of you will know that the government have recently reaffirmed their manifesto promise to introduce a national funding formula. It may surprise you though that very similar schools in different parts of the country can be funded very differently, sometimes with thousands of pounds differ- ence per pupil, to do the same job. This is due to the historic formula that is in place that creates large inequalities in funding received. Worcestershire has been a far less well-off area for school funding for a very long time, making our job of delivering education for our children that much more challenging than those better funded areas. Our local MP, Harriett Baldwin, has asked parents and staff to complete the consulta- tion at https://consult.education.gov.uk/ funding-policy-unit/schools-national-funding -formula . Please do make your voice heard so that we can look forward to a future that is fairer to our children in Worcestershire. It has been a short term, and consequently perhaps even busier than usual. Please look out for reports within the newsletter on the stunning performance of Grease’. My congratulations to all the cast and crew for delivering such a wonderful follow up to the success of last years We Will Rock You’. If you missed these performances, do consid- er coming to future musicals and plays. There are many highly talented young peo- ple at the school and the energy and enjoy- ment of their performance is well worth see- ing. We have also seen 2 ski trips out to Italy and Austria, with reports of good snow and excellent skiing coming back. Letters for next years trips are due out before the end of term, so look out for signing up for these. We have also hosted our French Exchange in school last week. We have now been running this exchange for 5 years, and we know our partner school very well. I visited them last spring and our pu- pils who take part have an enjoyable and memorable experience. I do urge all our young people to consider taking part in one of our exchanges to France or Germany to stay in a host familys home. You will not regret it and will build a life-long memory. My thanks to all the pupils, parents and staff that continue to work hard and con- tribute to the community that is The Chantry School. Happy Easter to you all. Anna Wilkinson I am sure many of you know the sad news that Anna Wilkinson, Y11 2015, passed away in January after a battle with a brain tumour. Anna was an extraordinary pupil, who had a real thirst for learning and life. She was fiercely determined to succeed at all she tackled, and she was cer-tainly able to achieve her goals whilst at The Chantry School. Anna spent much of Y11 undergoing treat-ment, and managed this very pri-vately – indeed many of her fellow pupils had no idea she was unwell. Despite her challenge, Anna achieved 10 A* grades last summer and it was our pleasure to award her the school’s ‘Determination to Suc-ceed’ award at our Awards Evening in November. Anna took a full part in school life, contributing to much of the extra-curricular teams and events, as well as many trips e.g. to China. Many in the school commu-nity are strongly touched by the loss of Anna and we are looking, with her family, to find ways to both remem-ber and celebrate her life. Indeed, a non-uniform day and a collection at our Grease performance has already raised £1342 for the Teenage Can-cer Trust. Please look out for further initiatives that will support Anna’s memory. I am sure the whole school community will join me in offering our condolences and support to Anna’s family as they try to come to terms with their loss.

Goodbyes We say sad farewell to Tina Lander this term. Tina has worked at the school for 14 years as a Science Technician. Tina has been a vital part of the smooth running of the Science Department over the years. Her good work has supported count-less pupils to have a richer practical experience in Science, but she has now decided to retire. We wish her a long and happy retirement.

Also leaving this term is Glenn How-ard, Maths teacher. Although Glenn has not been here very long we thank him for the contribution he has made to the school. Glenn is mov-ing to pastures new and we wish him all the best for the future.

Hello We have had two new temporary teachers start this term, Mr Toby Le

Grove, Science teacher covering Mrs Bailey’s maternity leave and Mr Nicholas Burford, English teacher covering Miss Solomon’s maternity leave. We warmly welcome them to the school.

Drama - ‘Grease’ Building on the success of last year’s production ‘We Will Rock You’, producing another musical was an exciting yet daunting challenge.

With the commitment and energy of another talented team, both pupils and staff, I can proudly say we did it! During my time teaching I have nev-er been able to say I have sold out for every performance night and that tickets were in demand, but now I can!

The process of creating Grease has given me more fond memories that I hope the pupils will also take with them. During the five months it took to rehearse I have watched the pu-pils grow with confidence, not only as performers but also individuals. Relationships have been formed and a great sense of teamwork was achieved. It amazes me to see just how much hard work, commitment and stamina every team member brings to the production and I often wonder if pupils realised just how much effort it takes would they really do it all over again? The answer is yes! It may take up a lot of their time during lunch breaks, after school, weekends and holidays. It may also take a lot of sweat and tears at times and most certainly the pupils endure a lot of nagging from myself and Mrs Masters….. but, in the end the feel-ing of fulfilment is indescribable and worth it all. So much so pupils often want to do it all over again!! I have been asked many times what next year’s show will be and I can re-veal……I still don’t know. As soon as this has been decided pupils will be notified of the auditions and we will get underway of creating another fantastic show.

To all those that were involved with Grease, including the parents who have given their support I am truly grateful for all of your time, patience and hard work. Many thanks to the paying public who came along to

support our talented pupils, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we had creating and performing it, we hope to see you back next year!

“ I couldn’t believe the car, it looked amazing”

“I wasn’t expecting the show to be that good, I want to come again. Very professional!”

“The students should feel very proud, I had goose bumps”

“The cast looked great, it took me back to the fifties”

English ‘Of Mice and Men ’

On Tuesday 23rd February, myself and 53 other Year 11 pupils and 3 staff journeyed to The Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham to watch a production of John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men". The aim was to aid us in our knowledge of the play, which makes up a chunk of our GCSE Literature exam this summer.

Before the production began, a buzz of excitement rang around the packed theatre, all age groups rep-resented in large numbers to witness the timeless classic. Two hours, 54 mins interval ice-creams and a few suspect American accents later, we departed feeling extremely satisfied with how the evening had proceeded and hopefully better equipped to face our exam.

Maths UK Maths Challenge

For the UKMT, four of us were asked from Year 8 and 9 to take part in the UK Maths Challenge Regional Final. It was good to find out I would be missing an English assessment that day!! When we got there we were put on table number 13 and we weren’t sure if that was going to bring us bad luck or not! We were given some warm up questions which felt pretty hard just for a start-er, however they were nothing com-pared to task one: The Group Chal-lenge. This task was extremely hard and showed in our score of only 15/60L. This however contrasted to our cross number in which we got 47/56 which we were pleased about! Next up we had the shuttle which was really hard and we only got 18/60K. However yet again we turned this on its head with the relay in which we got 32 pointsJ! All in all it was a challenging day pushing us all to our limits yet enjoyable! We were very pleased in our overall score in the teens (19/24) and weren’t sur-prised to find the schools in the top 3 were all private and had been prac-tising for three weeks before (including one school doing a whole lesson on the factors of 2016)!!

Motivational Day - 25th

February At the start of the day, it was clear that no one was really sure what the ‘motivational speech’ would entail. But we were willing to give it a chance. However, we’re sure that what Dave Keeling delivered ex-celled beyond anyone’s expecta-tions.

Perhaps more entertaining than we had expected, self-proclaimed ‘Ginger Dave’ conveyed his message in a somewhat comical manner – at points having us all roaring with laughter! Yet, we did also learn a significant amount about how to ap-proach tasks, manage our brain and ‘work smart’ rather than ‘work hard’. He even taught us about how our sleeping pattern greatly impacts on our outlook on the day ahead and how to alter it to increase our energy, openness and focus. We now know how we can aim for 10,10,10 mo-ments. In other words, have a decent day, but increase productivity to its full potential.

Understandably, our upcoming ex-ams will be a stressful period for all of us. But with the new attitude Dave Keeling bestowed upon us, we are sure they will go smoothly and suc-cessfully.

We thank you “Ginger man”. Alex Randall and Paula Bull Morales Y11

The NEC Skills Show 2015 Last term a group of pupils from Year 9 took a trip to the UK World Skills Show at the NEC in Birmingham. This Event showcased a vast range of skills, with cooking, games design, plumbing and everything in-between all being exhibited under one roof. All the pupils who attended the event were given the freedom to explore the exhibition in small groups, in or-der to maximise each pupil’s poten-tial of finding something relevant and exiting to them.

One of the main goals of the event was to aid pupils in finding some-thing that inspired them to look into a particular career path, in preparation for choosing their GCSE options. Each of the different skill areas (there were five different skill areas in the show, with some for building,

engineering and the army and others containing a range of more creative and more technical skills) held plenty of varying ‘have a go’ type activities being held throughout the day, in which pupils could gain a significant insight into what many different ca-reers and jobs were really like. Also on show were a plentiful array of demonstrations from the exhibitors at the show, which enabled pupilsto view anything that might be of inter-est to them and ask the demonstra-tors questions about it at the end. For pupils who were still a little un-sure on what they might wish to pur-sue when they leave school, the show offered an impressive amount of careers advisers wandering round different areas of the show, happy to engage in discussions with pupils and answer any questions they might have had.

The Skills Show was a brilliant ‘eye opener’ for the pupils who attended it, it gave many an insight into what they may want to do when they leave us here at The Chantry and what they need to achieve to reach ca-reers that they might want to pursue. The day certainly did its job of giving Year 9 pupils a little glimpse into the adult world of work, and where to aim next when they leave The Chan-try.

Oxford University trip We started the day in a lecture hall and our guide Emma set us tasks in groups with other schools. Even though we were all nervous, we soon settled in as Emma told us what uni-versity is and how to choose cours-es. Next we had a lecture on psy-chology and we discussed what we would like to study in psychology. After we went to the dining hall (that looked like Hogwarts) for fish and chicken nuggets, chips and choco-late pudding. Then it was a tour around Oriel College, where we saw a bar, a common room and even a student’s bedroom. We ended the day by researching what was re-quired at GCSE and A level for Ox-ford courses. We were all tired, but it was worth it.

Safer Internet Day Safer Internet Day 2016 was held on 9

th February. To raise awareness,

myself and Harrison Gibbins (Year 8), two members of the new Digital Leaders group, presented assem-blies to all year groups. The assem-blies highlighted the risks of online gaming as well as advice about who pupilscan talk to if they have any is-sues or concerns on the internet. A part of a BBC documentary was shown; it told the story of a teenager who was manipulated online and the tragic ending of his life. We also showcased the Safer Internet logo on the school computers to remind pupils about this important cause. We now hope that if pupilsknow of, or affected by happenings on the internet, they will be able to speak up to friends, family or another trusted adult. For more information (aimed at parents or students) you can visit the Safer Internet Centre website: www.saferinternet.org.uk. The Digital Leaders are also available in school to answer any questions that pupils may have - we are:

Safer Internet Poster Competition

Emma Mumford in Year 9 was one of the winning entries in this year’s Worcestershire schools Safer Inter-net Day poster competition. Over

1000 posters were submitted from schools across Worcestershire, in-cluding many from KS3 pupils at The Chantry. The judges were Barrie Sheldon, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, Sophie Banham from Just2Easy, Paul Barber from Westacre Middle School, Brett Lani-osh from Catshill Learning Partner-ships and the digital leaders from Westacre Middle School. Congratu-lations to Emma.

The Chantry Upper School Ski trip 2016 On Thursday, 11

th of February at

approximately 1.00pm, 45 excited school children, including myself, hauled our luggage onto the coach bound for Sextner, Italy. The compa-ny was made up of some experi-enced skiers as well as many pupils trying their hand at skiing for the first time and, as always, our expedition was led by ski trip veterans Mr Day and Mrs Hayes.

The coach journey was a gruelling 25 hours long and was only made shorter by the bus sing-alongs, rendi-tions of Grease (from The Chantry School’s very own Sandy) and of course Sister Clare’s prayer. On arri-val in Sextner, we were all desperate to clamber off the coach and try to catch a glimpse of some of the slopes we could be skiing on over the coming week. However there was little time to admire the views as we were straight to the ski hire to get equipped with boots, skis, helmets and anything else we’d need for a day on the slopes.

We all settled into our rooms very quickly after that, as they had com-fortable beds, mini-fridges and warm showers which (after nearly 30 hours

on a coach) we were grateful for, to say the least. Next it was time for dinner in the hotel and for the teach-ers to reveal the honoured ‘diners of the day’- a boy and a girl who had the honour of eating their meal on the teachers table.

The next morning we were up bright and early, ready for our first day on the slopes. As we boarded the cable car and were whisked up above the clouds into the mountain resort, we were graced with some terrific views of the sun beaming down on the snow and The Dolomites emerging from the mist. Once we were ac-quainted with our instructors, the groups went off for the day’s ski in-struction, each travelling at various speeds and some groups more wob-bly than others (not least of all Mrs Edwards).

Of course skiing was not the only activity we had the chance to try on the trip, as our evening activities in-cluded bowling, swimming and hurt-ling down the slopes at night on to-boggans led only by a head torch, which ,although we were all covered in snow and bitterly cold by the end, we all thoroughly enjoyed!

Although we had a few coughs, colds and other injuries, everybody had a brilliant time on the upper school ski trip 2016. It was an unforgettable experience and provided many of us with a life-long skill.

Thank you to Mrs Hayes, Mr Day and all the other teachers and pupils who made it such an exciting and enjoyable trip. George Benson Y11

Physical Education- Newsletter Information – March 2016

PE Newsletter information - Boys PE

During the Spring term our teams a have been busy either training in the lighter evenings or playing League Football matches or competing in the Worcestershire Schools Rugby Cup competitions. Following the success of our Year 11 U16 Team reaching the final to play The Chase School back in December our other age groups have seen successful during the Spring Term.

Year 9 Rugby victory secures cup final appearance in the Worcestershire Schools Cup Competition 2016 During the journey to this semi-final the squad chatted enthusiastically about their unknown opponents and the possible situations of the game. Chantry started well in the first half and both forwards and backs linked well to establish a lead of 14-10 at the half time interval. Goal line to goal line runs from Denis Whiteman secured a comfortable and justifiable lead at the half time interval. Prince Henrys then during the second half showed an impressive come back and looked to use the change in weather conditions(An extremely strong wind had picked up at the half time interval) to remain on attack for a 20 minute period. The Chantry team were in no way outplayed or intimidated by the continual attacking phases from Prince Henry’s team. Strong commitment and great defensive play finally resulted in a break out from defence to attack on two occasions in the final part of the game. The first offensive break saw the back link well to run 80 metres with Milo Treanor scoring in the corner. The final try was again scored from a break out of defence and a crossing of the whitewash by Hak Sammi. Bearing in mind Prince Henry’s size as a school the resulting victory of The Chantry team is highly commendable and impressive. Their qualification for the final on Monday 21st of March at Bromsgrove RFC will hopefully be another tale of success and achievement. Lads,, all the best for the final! Mr Stone.

Year 8’s Semi-final result v Bredon School proves to maintain the ethos of success and tradition. Frequently The Chantry Rugby teams are well known for their ability and success in the Worcestershire schools leagues and cup competitions. The Year 8’s performance to date can best be described as ‘Outstanding’. For both myself and Kevin Burton it has been a real pleasure to work with such a committed and talented bunch of lads this season. Having being undefeated all season in their league games and not conceding a single point the team has gone further by beating a strong Bredon Middle School in the semi-final of the Worcestershire Schools Cup competition with an impressive win of 24-17. They will now go to the final at Bromsgrove RFC on Monday 21st March where they will play against St Augustine’s School, Redditch. We wish all squad members the best and I am sure they will look to finish their superb season on a high note.

Squad members are very appreciative to Kevin Burton for his support in their coaching sessions this season!

Chantry Year 10 quarter finalist’s in the Worcester Schools Plate Competition v Hanley Castle

In a season when many fixtures are played it has been pleasing to see another age group gaining success in this plate competition. Charlie Coombes as Team Captain and Tom Ball as pack leader have frequently led on the pitch with their performances and encouragement of all squad members. After having a break in fixtures in the Spring Term, their start in the quarter final game against Hanlely Castle was not too good. However after 25 minutes into the first half the team started to improve their cohesion and linking in all game phases. A first half try by Tom Ball brought Chantry back into the game. Hanley showed dominance in the scrum, but occasionally The Chantry pack locked in to give platforms for the back line to establish good attacking phases. The second half saw both teams seeking to secure try scoring opportunities. Against the run of play, Chantry managed to off load a ball to Joe Wilkinson who then went on a 80 Yard run evading a Hanley scrambling defensive to score a great individual try. In the final 10 minutes the only difference between the two teams was the strength of the Hanley Pack which resulted in a quickly taken penalty by the home team resulting in a victory for Hanley Castle. Final Score: Hanley Castle 24- Chantry 12. Gentlemen from Chantrythere is always next year- Well done on a respectable performance! Mr Stone.

Year 7 Rugby Squad show potential and promise for the future

Having trained regularly on a weekly basis the Year 7 squad has developed well and had some good performances in the December Worcestershire Schools Floodlit competition and friendly fixtures to date. I am sure they have appreciated the time given to them by Coach, Lee Mills and Head Boy, Alex Randall this year. Boys, the challenge for success next year has been set from the year teams above you!

The Young Sports Leaders were Jodie Whiteman and Ellie Hunstone from Yr 8. Clover Aps and Izzy Jakeways from Year 9 and the Year 10 Leaders were Georgia Bates, Sophie Bray and Ella Cashion.

Young Leaders at the Winter School Games in March The Chantry very proudly had Young Leaders representing the Partnership schools as officials, at the Worcestershire Winter Games at the Worcester University. They had received training from Sports Governing Bodies and were fully equipped to then help organise and then deliver sporting activities to the finalists in their competitions. Our Young Leaders

The Chantry Sports Leaders officiate at a new festival On 8th March The Chantry Cluster Schools enjoyed a festival to celebrate The Olympics in Rio this year. The children were only 6 years and the Young Leaders helped them complete various relay races in teams of 4. The children enjoyed an Opening Ceremony to display flags and received Awards at the end.

Well done again to the group of Young Leaders from Years 8 and 9:Izzy Jakeways, Jodie Whiteman, Ellie Hunstone, Kerry

Blissett, Georgia Livesey and Adam Scurrell.

An exciting event officiated by The Chantry Young Leaders At the beginning of February, The Young Leaders held a Rounders festival for the local Primary schools. Although it was incredibly loud and manic as ever, it was such great fun and I’m pretty sure both the Young leaders and the Primary school children enjoyed it thoroughly! A big congratulations go to Martley Primary School who entered 2 teams and won their separate sections and then went on to draw in the final. By Georgia Bates , Yr 10

Cheerleading! A small team of Year 10 Young Sports Leaders went into Martley Primary school to take Cheerleading sessions on Mondays after school. They planned the choreography and worked on routines to prepare for a short performance. The sessions were very popular as they worked with a large group of 30 children. Well done to Georgia Bates, Izzie Martin, Clover

New Community Projects by Young Leaders Ten Young Leaders spent the day receiving training for a programme to develop community links in Martley. Since the training, this group of leaders have met to plan events which will include U5s and OAPs for events in the village hall. They are all working on their own initiative and have wonderful ideas and are proving they really understand what it takes to be an excellent role model: Tommy Fouweather is leading the projects with Luke Pycock, Will Higgins, Georgia Livesey, Charlie Allford, Marc Hackman, Abbey Mooney, Ellie Hunstone, Lily Smith and Conor Burton.

Winter School Games Cross Country Finals Huge congratulations go to the Year 7 pupils who qualified for the Finals of the Partnership Schools’ Cross Country. They represented Worcestershire West at Sanders Park on 11th March on a wonderfully sunny day on a lovely cross country course. They raced with the best from 7 x districts: Katlyn Griffiths placed 12th and Sam Viner 18th in their races, with Hayden Leek Morgan Watkins, Josh Davies and Aimee Cochrane running very well to be placed 20-25 in their races. Well done: they can be sure to face a good summer next term in Athletics.

Trampolining Trip

On Thursday 4th February 50 students from Year 7 – 11 went to ‘BOING ZONE’ in Stourbridge.

The pupils had exclusive use of the whole facility for an hour and took part in games such as trampolining dodgeball, trampolining basketball and also got a chance to use the foam pits.

Due to the positive feedback from students and the numbers who wanted to attend we will look to run the trip again at some point in the future.

The trip was run because of the interest in trampolining clubs which have been running on a Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtime and also because of the success of pupils in the Worcester trampolining competition held at Abbey Stadium.

‘This Worcester Girl Can’ Day Across Worcester on Monday 29th February schools in Worcester were holding events for ‘This Worcester Girl Can’ day. Chantry girls took part in events on the day including Year 7 and 8’s doing clubbercise (a fitness dance class that involves aerobics to music).

During lunch there was also a girl’s only marketplace where lots of local sports clubs came to promote sports and clubs for girls to get involved in such as girls’ rugby, girls’ football, yoga and mindfulness, archery, rowing and many more.

The girls were then offered different activities to sign up to for free taster sessions. The idea of the day was to increase the awareness of sports and clubs available for girls and to try to increase girls’ emotional and physical wellbeing through participation in sport.

Thanks to the Young Leaders for helping to promote the day and also for all the girls who were involved in the day or any activities advertised on the day.

The girls finished as runners up in the tournament and did themselves proud despite the very cold conditions. The squad comprised of: Alana Wilson, Paige Bullock (C), Pippa Green , Abbie Picken, Anna Irish , Shannon Mills, Megan Embleton, Rebecca Francis, Ruby Huxley, Sophie Ogle, Sophie Clifton.
