PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Chambersburg Garden Club Members,
I would like to thank you for your support in having me lead your club for another term. I will do my best to keep everyone informed as to what our club is doing throughout the year. It is also important for you to know how and where the money you earn at the Greens Sale is dispersed. We do have a budget in the back of our Yearbook which lists our proposed activities for 2018.
Our club will host the District IV Meeting in April. This is quite a responsibility for our club! We will have about ninety ladies throughout the District attend this meeting. I hope many of you will come forward to help the committee make it a memorable meeting.
We have three new members listed in the Yearbook. I hope you will welcome them and help them understand the purpose of our club. Two of our new members are Master Gardeners. We are fortunate our club continues to grow.
The Yearbook Committee has worked diligently on setting up programs for 2018. Please take a few minutes to go through your Yearbook and see the diverse programs. Also, please keep in mind that we will need other programs for next year. Hopefully many of you will come forward with ideas for programs for 2019.
We have an excellent website and Facebook page you can reference. There are photos of our activities posted on a regular basis on these sites.
Please join us throughout 2018 and enjoy the wonderful programs that have been arranged for you.
Fondly,
Holly Kadel President, Chambersburg Garden Club

FEATHER YOUR NEST
Think of plants as the feathers in your nest and find ways to use them.
Birds gather feathers to add in their nest to not only keep the chicks warmer once they hatch but to make it more comfortable while incubating the eggs. Home gardeners can “feather their nest” by creating an environment that adds function to a lifestyle that includes comfort and beauty. One way to do this is to use plants in the home and landscape that provide both beauty and function.
Houseplants such as Peace Lily, English Ivy, and Spider Plant help purify the air by removing formaldehyde indoors and the Boston Fern can remove benzene and xylene—components of gasoline exhaust that can migrate indoors from an attached garage. Keep an Aloe Vera plant in the kitchen to not only clean the air but use its gel to help heal burns and cuts.
Outdoor areas can be designed much as interior space and include practical uses of plants. Outdoor plant choices not only add to the landscape but can have practical uses as well. Perennial vines on a trellis can screen utility areas such as air conditioning units or electrical/cable boxes or can add visual interest to fencing. Large shrubs or dense trees can be a privacy screen and dampen noise.
Herbs are excellent dual purpose plants with interesting shapes and many uses. They can be grown in containers outdoors and brought indoors in winter or can be mingled in with other plants throughout the landscape. Uses range from adding taste to foods to potpourri and they are excellent in fresh flower arrangements. A small, well-tended vegetable garden, perhaps in a raised bed, is practical and adds to the visual interest of a yard.
Since “birds of a feather flock together,” consider your gardening colleagues in The Chambersburg Garden Club as part of your flock. Nurture your friendships but also fly beyond the nest to make new friends and encourage those with similar interests to join our flock.

CIVIC DEVELOPMENT REPORT
Though we had planned to add additional perennials to our Memorial Park beds this spring, we postponed that idea when we learned that, due to building the new aquatic center, water would not be available all summer. After cleaning the beds in early spring and mulching in May, we continued maintenance of the flowering areas through the summer until the autumn cleanup. Thanks to Mother Nature’s unusually generous, regular rains, our fears of parched beds were not realized, and continuous flowering and color were abundant most of the season. We look forward to adding those new perennials next year as the town looks forward to the park’s new appearance as well.
All plants were lush and green due to consistent rain and cooler temperatures through the spring and most of the summer this year. A September heat wave and 20 day drought stressed all growing things resulting in leaf drop and a very subdued fall color. However, our civic gardens at the Old Jail are thriving and will receive much needed cutting back of overhanging limbs and removal of one dead holly tree. A power washing with Clorox removed mildew from the rocks in our simulated stream bed and pond. After all leaves have fallen and been cleared Preen will be applied and we will mulch again next year. Two large winter damaged boxwoods which we had tried to save have been removed. The sweet bay magnolias in the Colonial alley are maturing nicely. In the Japanese garden negative space and placement of stones are as important to design as are the plantings. Therefore, pruning is very important.
Our town is undergoing some exciting new growth in the downtown. Closest to the Old Jail, where our garden is located, is the restored Coyle Library with its dramatic very modern addition. The third floor of the library contains a roof garden which overlooks the Old Jail. We are hoping that the Kittochtinny Historical Society will allow the gates to our garden to be open to the public in the warmer months. This would mean more diligence on our part as far as watering and weeding but that would be worth the added exposure.
