Dental students of Centura College-Norfolk have been enthusiastic about studying tooth morphology. Sydni Weatherholtz, a day student made a unique piñata using balloons and papier-mâché. Weatherholtz also showed creativity by adding the nerve endings to the root of the tooth. She was eager to give the inspiring presentation at the end of the module so that other students could appreciate oral anatomy. Weatherholtz described the tooth structures perfectly to the class and instructor.

Weatherholtz shared her talents of piñata making skills as a long-time family pass time. She and her father used this as a time for creativity for birthday celebrations. It was a special day for Weatherholtz to remember her childhood memories with the school project. Weatherholtz not only make her dad proud but made an “A” on the project and gave her coordinator the piñata as a keepsake.

On Wednesday, August 1st, the students of the Medical Role I class put on a perfor-mance titled “Snow White and the Medical Dwarves”. In their modern day spin on an old classic, each “Dwarf” portrayed a different personality type most commonly dealt with while in a professional working environ-ment and the many ways to effectively deal and communicate with them. The reasoning behind this stage play is that in the Medical Role I class, the students study chapters on scope of practice, effective communication techniques, and ethics, morals and law. What better way to learn then to actually do it. The script for this play was written collectively by the students and included ideas from not only the chapters studied but from their own personal experiences as well.

The Boss of the offi ce, better known as “Mirror Mirror”, played by Francine Harris, showed the exact behavior that most bosses

have in the real world. Talking down to, and threatening the “Dwarves” during their inter-views and throughout the work day showed both good and bad morals and ethics, and also came borderline to what is allowable by the law. The different personas of the “Dwarves” showed how knowledge and scope of prac-tice come into play and how important it is to know your role, so to speak. The eating of the poison apple was portrayed as a lunch time between rivals; the Evil Queen, played by Barbara Garcia; Snow White, played by Danielle Harmon and the Conniving Wait-ress, played by Ashley Parker and the drink-ing of a poison apple martini. This event showed not only what is bound by law, but how morals and ethics can be misconstrued by peer pressure alone.

Finally, the events leading up to Snow White waking from her deep sleep, showed the many different ways that each personality type can effectively come together and work as a team. That was the way to break the sleep spell, to fi nally start working together, putting aside differences and becoming a team instead of an individual. All in all the play showed us that even though people have different mor-als, ethics and personalities; it is possible for everyone to “just get along.” You may not like the person to your left and right or even your boss, but there is a time and place for every-thing, and learning that lesson will help you be an effective asset to your work place.

As the world becomes more engulfed by technology, older methods of research such as using textbooks and encyclo-pedias are slowly being phased out. A student may no longer need to know how to use a li-brary catalog, now that they can jump on Google Scholar or fi nd the book available online. Centura Chesapeake took the initiative to not only teach our students how to use the Learn-ing Resource Center, but to have some fun while doing it.

Students strolled to school on Wednesday, August 29th

by Jaimie Buster, CCHEas usual. To their surprise they found a yellow brick road lead-ing down the hallway. The Mas-sage Therapy students scratched their heads’ as they crossed the courtyard on the sidewalk cov-ered in yellow bricks. One by one they converged as they ventured closer to the end of the road that lead to the library. At the end of the journey, students were greeted by Dorothy, who stood behind the house that crushed the Wicked Witch of the East. She handed out envelopes full of clues that led to different books in the Learn-ing Resource Center. As students

by Tracy Owen, CCHAExcitement fi lled the air as former classmates reunited in North Charleston on Friday, September 14th. The anticipation of the 51 students who participated in the ceremony could be heard throughout the lobby and auditorium of the Cathedral of Praise. They patiently waited for the arrival of 7:00pm as they watched their family and friends fi ll the auditorium carrying fl owers and balloons. Graduation went off without a hitch. Jer-maine Husser, Capital Campaign Offi ce at Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina was the guest speaker. Husser’s speech ti-tled, “Let’s Move,” was very motivational as our students move into the work force.

Several awards were given during the course of the night. Two students had perfect atten-dance for the entire program, Octavia Woods and Pauline Gerard. Woods also received the Award of Excellence for her dedication, atti-tude, and community service that she showed during her program. The Richard E. McLeod award was given to a student in each of the three programs. The recipient for Medical As-sistant was Sherrice Simmons; Medical Bill-ing and Coding was Helena Neal, and Massage Therapy was Jarrett Bryant. The Valedictorian was Jamela Vereen. Vereen graduated with a 3.96 GPA. The Salutatorian was Kimberly Dodson, graduating with a 3.92 GPA.

Congratulations and good luck to all our graduates.

On July 14th, Centura College Norfolk (CNOR) hosted its Class of 2012 Gradua-tion Ceremony at Virginia Wesleyan Col-lege. Out of 150 diploma or degree earning students, 70 attended the event. The gradu-ates were greeted by family and friends. To begin the ceremony, the audience listened to a captivating a capella rendition of the Na-tional Anthem sung by Medical Assisting student, Latonya Pender. The auditorium sat spellbound as keynote speaker, Mr. Kevin Ragin, Education Coordinator of Albemarle Hospital, addressed the graduates. “Dream without boundaries and your possibilities are endless,” Ragin encouraged.

The day was also about recognizing theachievements of the graduates. The Richard

E. McLeod Memorial award was presented to the students with an outstanding overall grade point average and an exceptional attitude to both their work and education. The follow-ing award recipients were revealed at the cer-emony: Pamela Sanchez (Medical Billing and Coding Specialist), Chanele Tolson (Practical Nursing), and Christina Williams (Dental As-sisting). The Award of Excellence was pre-sented to Medical Assisting student Karylee Velez. By receiving the award, Velez dem-onstrated that she was an outstanding student through her high grade point average, positive attitude, and continued personal growth. In a speech to her graduating cohort, Velez urged her peers to continue down their chosen paths of excellence as it would get them far in their lives.

On August 18th, the Virginia Beach campus of Centura College held its 2012 gradua-tion ceremony in the auditorium of Spring Branch Community Church. Marketing teacher, advocate of higher education, and 2012 Award Finalist for Norfolk Public Schools’ Most Outstanding in Career and Technical Education, Mrs. Courtney Jack-son, M.Ed., gave the commencement ad-dress. Jackson spoke to the graduates about the importance of self-reliance, motiva-tion, and determination to achieving their career goals in today’s society. She en-lightened, encouraged, and praised the Class of 2012 Graduates! There were many distin-guished awards presented to our graduates during the commencement ceremony. The Virginia Beach campus held their semi-annual Career Fair and it was a big success. There were 16 employers present including Geico; Liberty Tax Offi ce Team; Protemps; Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation; Pa-parazzi Jewelry; Mary Kay; Dillard’s Salon and Spa; Massage Luxe; Anew Body Oa-sis; Savant, LTD; Always Best Care; Home Instead Senior Care; Medical Transports; Planned Parenthood and Opportunity, Inc.

During the career fair, the library was quite busy with students participating in career development, resume writing, and interview-ing strategies. There was a scavenger hunt in which the students located titles of the library’s career re-sources, recorded in-formation about the books and entered the responses for a prize drawing. Additionally, there was a video-recording, “First Impres-sions” playing for students to stop by the library to watch and answer the questions for a drawing. The “First Impressions” win-ners were Massage Therapy student, Fatima Ahmed and Business student, Sandra Miller.

From the library scavenger hunt, Computer Network Management student, Timothy Ja-cobs, was the lucky winner.

Elsewhere, students and recent graduates spent the morning handing out resumes, networking, and fi nding out about different career possibilities. One Computer Net-working student stated “I had no idea Lib-erty Tax had an IT department and they are

right down the road from my house!”

Several students expressed their excitement about new opportunities and interviews that they had scheduled. As for the employers, the recruit-er from Always Best Care left informing the staff that she had scheduled at least 15 in-terviews! The day was a huge success for Centura College students.

Centura College of Columbia had a suc-cessful Annual Career Fair on Wednesday, August 1st. The event was hosted by Ca-reer Services with assistance from everyone at the school. Several vendors participated including Wells Fargo Bank; Woodforest Bank; Doctor’s Express; Correct Care So-lutions; Voters Registration; Morinda Bio-active; Eau Claire Cooperative; New Morning Foun-dation; Palmetto Health Hospital; En-gineering for Kids; SMX Staff Man-agement/Amazon; Crossroad Apart-ments; Summer Landing Apartment; MEDS; SCAAF; Retire EASE Senior

Services; SC Department of Health and En-vironmental Control (DHEC) and Boys and Girls Club of Midlands.

We had our admission representatives available to give school tours. Also, we had our faculty, staff, current students and graduates assisting to make this event a

success. We had plenty of food, live music provided by our very own HVAC coordinator, Mr. Halley. There was a talent show and the winner was Bianca Walker, a Medical Assis-tant student who received a $25 gas card. The outcome of the annual Career Fair was very successful and we look forward to next year’s event.

Centura College Richmond Midlothian re-membered Patriot Day which is the annual observance of September 11, held in memory of the nearly 3,000 people who died during terrorist attacks in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. Many students re-fl ected on the tragic day with recollections of their whereabouts on September 11, 2001.

Pictures of the Trade Center, the Firefi ght-ers Memorial, the Memorial Waterfall, the Pentagon Memorial and the Memorial Lights that represent the Trade Center were on display in the Student Services Offi ce. In addition, there was information detailing

the accounts of 9/11 for each student to take. Even though 9/11 was a tragic day in American his-tory the students and faculty expressed appreciation the me-morial.

bravely entered the Land of Oz, they were greeted by the Wizard and Toto, too.

Students were asked to fi nd seven different books located in various sections of the li-brary. In each book, they were directed to a page number where clues helped them pick out a single word. No stragglers were left be-hind, the Wizard and Toto gave students tips that pointed them in the right direction. Once students found all seven words, they had to unscramble the words to create the secret message: there is no place like the library.

Out of all 71 participants, 68 students were able to correctly identify the mystery sentence. Barnes and Nobles gift cards and Centura gear were presented to the lucky winners. Yel-low brick road bookmarks, with remnants of Dorothy’s shoes, were distributed to encour-age students to keep reading and remind them of all the fun they can have in our Learning Resource Center. Even after the yellow brick road had disappeared, the Land of Oz seems to get more foot traffi c which keeps the Wizard on his toes. With a great team, a resourceful li-brary, and a little creativity we were able to in-spire students to take a break from the comput-ers and learn a thing or two about the Learning Resource Center.

Ms. Brenda Warren, Practical Nursing program student, became a member of the Virginia Medical Reserve Corps (VAM-RC) in February and has completed her orientation training.

After a fi eld trip to the Norfolk Public Health Department, Warren became interested in

this organiza-tion and felt the desire to give back to her com-munity and those in need when a disaster or emer-gency arises. The VAMRC uti-lizes volunteers to support local public health ini-tiatives, such as, fl u vaccination

programs, response for local emergencies, health screenings and disasters.

Warren is preparing for local community service and after completing all of her training will be ready to serve for state and, if needed, national emergencies. Warren’s fi rst certifi cate is displayed to give other students incentive to seek other avenues where their skills and time can be used within their own communities.

Warren will be completing her nursing program in September, however, she will continue with her training in the volunteer corps. As a Licensed Practical Nurse, she will become a valuable asset for the Medical Reserve Corps. “I am a very caring person and I like to help people, so this is just a natural way for me to do that,” said Warren, “It’s just something I want to do to help.” We applaud Brenda and wish her continued success in all of her endeavors.

Alpha Beta Kappa (ABK) members at Cen-tura College Richmond– Midlothian Campus held a school supply drive for area students. The goal of the drive was to provide supplies to students in need. Children often discon-nect because they don’t have the adequate supplies they need to learn and achieve. The ABK members supplied students with the tools they need to learn and succeed in school. Diane Williams and Dominque Bender deco-rated collection boxes for the supplies that were located by the reception’s desk and in the Student Affairs offi ce.

The drive collected many back to school staples that were donated to the Richmond City Public Schools Head Start Program. Families in need of school supplies were identifi ed by Ms. Betty Boone, the Health

and Program S e r v i c e s Monitor for the Rich-mond Head Start Pro-gram. Ms. Boone was elated to receive the supplies and e x p r e s s e d s i n c e r e thanks for the generous donation.

Centura College Richmond Midlothian Campus saved 24 lives! On July 25th, the generous blood donations of the students, faculty and staff were equivalent to saving the lives of 24 individuals. Some students were apprehensive about donating blood because it was their fi rst time. Others were in their comfort zone because they sign up to give blood each time the bloodmobile is scheduled to be on campus.

Many of the students who are pros at do-nating blood encouraged the fi rst timers. Some faculty and students who were fearful that they would not qualify to donate blood signed up and had the screening! It is re-freshing to see everyone so eager to donate blood and save a life. Prior to the drive those

who had signed up to donate blood drank plenty of water and disclosed that they had eaten a health breakfast. The result of ev-eryone’s efforts was a success-ful blood drive. The bloodmo-bile will visit R i c h m o n d -M i d l o t h i a n once more be-fore the end of the year. The sign-up list is almost com-pletely fi lled!

In bleak circumstances often times there seems nowhere to turn. The Richmond-Midlothian campus held a Community Re-source Day on August 8th, to showcase re-sources and programs to students that could possibly turn a diffi cult situation into a hope-ful solution. Several local organizations and agencies exhibited free resources available to college students. Participating agencies included BB&T, Chesterfi eld County De-partment of Social Services, Costco, Gold’s Gym, GSC Apartments, Richmond Depart-ment of Social Services, and Sam’s Club.

Students benefi ted from the offers by apply-ing for housing with the GSC representative, purchasing Costco and Sam’s clubs mem-berships and updating documents with the Department of Social Services. One student expressed excitement about having her ap-plication for housing approved through GSC Apartments and is looking forward to mov-ing within the next week. Students were also thrilled to be able to join the wholesale clubs.

Not only did the students benefi t from the Community Resource Day, but the faculty and staff also took advantage of joining the wholesale clubs. Student participation in the event was stellar prompting the companies to inquire about returning to the campus to do budgeting and benefi ts workshops for the students. The event was a tremendous suc-cess. The greatest aspect was that was a one stop shop.
