Liturgical Ministers
Hi everyone.
What a week, and it's only Tuesday! What a storm. They say the CR and Hiawatha areas took sustained
winds at the level of a Category 1 hurricane, with gusts equaling a Category 3. Gee, if I wanted to live in
Florida
Those were thirty long minutes waiting in an inner room while the building shook, groaned, and popped.
Monday evening I drove to Marion for a vigil service and all those power lines down along Highway 13 were pretty scary
to behold. One guy pulling a camper was actually running his vehicle and camper in contact with the lines themselves,
since everything had fallen so close to the road in places. Apparently, they weren't hot. Lord have mercy.
I surveyed all the churches for damage. Central City, Coggon, Prairieburg, and Stone City all look fine. St. Patrick's in
Anamosa took on some water in a few places: some seepage on the north wall of the basement (I've got a fan running...)
and quite a bit came into the bell tower as well. If any St. Patrick's parishioners are interested in going up into the tower
to scope out the situation, I'd be really appreciative. It's possible there is still quite a bit of water up there even though it
has stopped peaking through to the level of the choir loft. Most of the decorations in storage there have been removed
to dry and get them out of the way. Julia Bean, Julia Clair, and Judy Dietiker did an awesome job triaging the situation
overall on the Anamosa campus, and I thank them for attending the immediate aftermath until I got there. Thanks to
everyone else who I'm sure made some rounds and dealt with issues without anyone seeing them.
The Anamosa office doesn't have phones or internet yet, although power is restored. This means a bulletin this week is
pretty unlikely, especially since they are printed in Cedar Rapids, which bore the brunt of the storm and will probably be
without power for a while yet.
As of this writing, the Mass schedule for next week would be as normal with the addition of the funeral for Joyce Hanken
in Anamosa on Friday, Aug 21. I'll still offer the 8:30am Mass there that day for anyone who wants to go.
I'll probably have more to add, but this is enough for now. I am praying for you! I know a lot of you have property
damage, crop damage, vehicle damage . . .
"How long, O Lord, how long?" (Psalm 6).
But nevertheless: "The mercies of the Lord are not spent . . . It is good to wait in silence for the saving help of the
Lord" (Book of Lamentations).
Fr. Nick

Are you looking for some-
thing new to read??
The parish office has copies of the
St. Patrick Church History Book
Project for purchase for $20.
There is plenty of information to keep reading
for hours and hours.
History about the Church, the stained glass
windows, the clergy and the sisters & teachers
at St. Patrick School, the KC’s, Holy Cross
Cemetery and much more is included!! It’s a
wonderful keepsake of the history of St. Pats.
Holy Cross Cemetery Clean Up
With this past week’s storm, there was
plenty of clean up that was needed. So
many of the flowers were displaced and
strewn about. Best efforts were made to
get things back into place. It is requested
that, flowers be picked up within the next couple of
weeks. If you have questions or need help, contact
Bob Capron at 319-350-4895.
We look forward to reuniting with your students again soon!
We especially hope to reconvene Faith Formation classes in
person with social distancing and/or wearing masks.
However, if the coronavirus cases would continue to rise,
we may have to resort to other methods to teach the faith.
By August 17, we will be able to decide how to proceed and
provide the information to our families. In the meantime,
the families in the parish are in our prayers. God bless you!
Please pray for the repose of the soul of
Joyce Hanken
who passed away this past week.
