TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

June 19, 2016 “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” LUKE 9:23

We are not very good at “denying our-selves” in our society. Our current economic situation is evidence of what happens when people think they can have everything they want. Jesus calls us to set our own personal “wants” aside so that we have the resources to follow Him instead.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…. Dear Friends, Beyond the debate of calling it a terrorist attack or a hate crime, the fact remains that so many innocent lives were brutally destroyed in Or-lando and the nation is shaken even as we offer prayers and sympa-thies to all those affected by this horrible tragedy. Beyond the acrimony on the divi-sive issue of gun control, there is the helplessness we all feel in the face of individ-uals or groups wanting to unleash violence. As the pundits once more put forward so many proposals to make our nation safe from such atrocities, one proposal that is not in the conversation is the need for solid family life rooted in certain funda-mental values – no matter what one’s religion is. One such value is joy. At one of his inspiring homilies, Pope Francis gave a “homework” to families: “How are things when it comes to joy at home? Only you must answer this question!” Then he explained:

Dear families, you know very well that the true joy which we experience in the family is not superficial; it does not come from material objects, from the fact that everything seems to be going well… True joy comes from a profound har-mony between persons, something which we all feel in our hearts and which makes us experience the beauty of togetherness, of mutual support along life’s journey. But the basis of this feeling of deep joy is the presence of God, the presence of God in the family and his love, which is welcoming, merciful, and respectful towards all. And above all, a love which is patient: patience is a vir-tue of God and he teaches us how to cultivate it in family life, how to be patient, and lovingly so, with each other. To be patient among ourselves. A patient love. God alone knows how to create harmony from differences. But if God’s love is lacking, the family loses its harmony, self-centeredness prevails and joy fades. But the family which experiences the joy of faith communicates it natu-rally. That family is the salt of the earth and the light of the world, it is the leaven of society as a whole.

The words of Pope St. John Paul II are worth remembering here: “As the fami-ly goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live.” May these words make us reflect on the joy in our own families. We thank God for our families. Instead of bemoaning the imperfections in our families, we can keep trying, very patiently, to make our own family a “home of joy” with basic human values – especially mutual respect and acceptance. Father’s Day is a special occasion for all the Fathers to take lead in making this more of a reality. Happy Father’s Day to all our Fathers! Your brother in Christ, Fr. Abraham Orapankal

MARRIAGE TUNE-UP In the most frequented area of your home (generally the kitchen/nook area) arrange a dozen or so of your favorite framed photos of your husband with you and your kids. A great way to re-mind him of the wonderful memories he’s had as a Father and Husband throughout the years.

PARENTING TUNE-UP Celebrate Father’s Day as a Family: Take the time before Father’s Day to explain to the kids why it’s important they should be on their best behavior (no tantrums or fighting among sib-lings). Remind them how special their Father is and how this is the day to honor him for all he does.

WE WELCOME DEACON ENOCK BERLUCHE, JUNE 25/26 Before the earthquake, Haiti has been described as one of the poorest country on the face of the earth. After the earthquake, it became the poorest country on earth. “Source de Vie,” (means Source of Life in English) is the vision of a good Haitian missionary, led by Father Edmond Antoine Ceriel in short Father Pascal. The residents of this community are the Haitian society’s typical bottom layer, the forgotten. Father Pascal’s project calls for bringing help to the people of “Source de Vie” in a dignified way, by giving them the tools to grow, educate themselves, and share among them the skills to labor the earth, raise cattle and poultry, devel-op arts and crafts. Unfortunately there was no water in the community. The villag-ers had to literally climb over mountains to access water, in Haiti that means going about it on foot. A water well was an immediate necessity. With the financial help of many, the project of digging a well was successful. Fortunately, we have found plenty of water. More Funds are needed for more projects to help the community become a self-sufficient community. Deacon Enock Berluche has been going to Haiti back and forth on mission helping Fr. Pascal and Source de Vie Community in Haiti. He is scheduled to preach a mission appeal in our parish on June 25/26, 2016. Your generous finan-cial support for the Haitian people will be greatly appreciated.

4TH OF JULY FOOD CARDS Each year, St. John's provides generous food baskets for the holi-days to our neighbors who are struggling financially. It has long

been our tradition to continue this practice during the summer months with some assistance around the 4th of July. We do this by providing about 10 families and 19 individual elderly folks with food gift cards to the local grocery stores. Stop by the narthex after Mass and purchase Shop Rite gift cards in any amount. Use the envelopes at the Social Ministry Station and deposit your donation in the collection box by the table, place it in the collection basket or drop it by the office. Please have all donations in by the weekend of June 25-26.

SOME SPECIAL NEEDS First of all, a big “THANK YOU” to all who contributed to the collection of the clothing for the 3 little girls. As it often happens, their mom broke into tears of joy when presented with them. This is a joy that I wish could be shared with all of you. We do have another pressing need that was brought to our attention by another church. We contributed generously to assist a young man living in High Bridge who fell behind in his electric payments and had his electricity shut off. He received help also from NORWESCAP and has contacted a social service agency in Flemington for counseling services. In essence, he is trying to pick himself up, but faced with unemployment finds that at times it is a bit difficult. He still requires $900.00 to get his utilities in order and we would like to help him in this regard. Please!!! if you can assist by contributing to this special need, please do, and place your donation in the Social Ministry donation box in the Narthex and earmark it for JCP&L. Thanks, and remember in our Community we are all Ministers.

OUR CHANGE FOR CHANGE PROGRAM

All is well with the return of our collection containers continuing at a nice pace. Please remember to take another as you return a full one and remember to make

this a family project, reminding the children that there are many people out there who we assist and that a full container can yield enough to pur-chase a $25 food card and sometimes very close to a $50 card. Thanks for your support.

SOWING SEEDS OF MERCY It’s time to plant your seeds!!

If you would like to par-ticipate in the “Sowing Seeds of Mercy” effort, you will need to plant your

seeds within the next two weeks, so they will have sufficient time to grow for harvesting this fall. You can plant them in your garden or in a 10” pot, water and watch them grow all sum-mer. Then in the fall, harvest the beans and bring them back (unshelled) to St. John’s. The beans will be used to make soup mixes to be distributed in the holiday food baskets. They will also be used to make soup for the SHIP’s Galley Soup Kitchen and Eli-jah’s Promise. There are extra seed packets available at the Social Ministry station in the narthex.

SMILE WITH YOUR FAMILY A small boy was at the zoo with his father. They were looking at the tigers, and his father was telling him how ferocious they were. “Daddy, if the tigers got out and ate you up…” “Yes, son?” the father asked, ready to console him. “…Which bus would I take home?”

Our daughter, Cristie, made my husband a Father’s Day card entitled “Things My Dad Would Never Say.” Such as: “Can you turn up that music?” “Go ahead and take my truck. Here’s 50 bucks for gas.” “I LOVE your tattoo. We should both get new ones.” “Here, you take the remote.”

SPECIAL NEEDS REQUEST Last week we spoke of a young man in High Bridge who is having fi-nancial difficulties to the extent that utility bills and rent are almost impos-sible to meet.He is not alone and the list grows. Last weekend we received a dona-tion from a family that will help start a flow of money that we can donate to him, and for that, we thank the family. With the influx of requests we've expe-rienced our funds are running low and we've had to put a cap on the amount doled out to individuals and families. Please, please help these people as we all know that is what Jesus wants us to do. Show your Mercy as He has shown His. Thank you and God Bless our Community.

PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES – JUNE 12 The first meeting of the newly commissioned Parish Pastoral Council of 2016-17 is traditionally a ‘transitional meeting” with retiring members present. We began the meeting with the Lectio-Divina faith-sharing prayer on the Gospel. Next we reflected on our annual goal focusing on the outreach to various segments of the larger community. Positive comments on these instances were voiced: the Auction event (people enjoyed true fellowship and fun at this well executed event), the new Garden’s raised beds (cultivated by 27 families of the larger community) and the Living Stations of the Cross (with the cooperation of the nearby Protestant Church-es). The following were the salient items in the agenda: Our Pastor introduced the new Parish Pastoral Council Officers for this year:

Gloria Cucchiara (Chair), Paul Gagen (Co-Chair), Fred Galano (Secretary) and Mary D’Avella (Joint-Secretary). The new Council Members joining this year are Marcio Silva de Souza, Jo Ann Jarvis and Debby Kelemen. The other members are Mauricia Nacamuli, Gary Porto and Mike Pagliuca.

The retiring member Andrew Kuhn reflected his time on the Council as truly an opportunity to serve and come to know the parish community better. Peter Roy-al, the outgoing Chair, gratefully reminisced about the many unsung heroes and heroines of our parish who make this community truly vibrant.

Ministry Liaisons responsibilities were chosen by the members. Discussed the diocesan training sessions for new members and a day of retreat

to be arranged for the present and past members. The Pastor emphasized Evangelization as the primary mission of the parish.

PPC members are to exemplify it through our own faith formation. The whole Family Catechesis to be introduced this year will move the parish to an inter-generational approach to faith formation.

The meeting was adjourned after an evaluation and closing prayer.

GRADUATE RECOGNITION Thank you to the graduates who attended the Graduate Recognition Mass last Sunday. We all appreciated the beautiful song, Humble and Kind, that Music Min-istry sang for the graduates. It was actually one of this year’s college graduates, John Lacy who had suggested the song to Gerry Brisson a while back. How appro-priate that the Mass they used it for was the Graduate Mass. If you are a graduate please take a card from the table in the narthex under the parish graduate name display. Next year we hope the event will be bigger and better with more graduates present from Elementary School, High School and College able to attend and cele-brate with the parish. The following is a list of the graduates we were notified of. College Graduates are: Megan D’Avella, Emily Evanko, Pat Gardner, Ken Jarvis, Alison Kucharski, and Lauren Pepperman. High School Graduates are: Colin Evanko, Michael Fabiano, F. Joseph Germino III, Derek Howarth, Patrick Janas, Claire Jarvis, Alanna Porto, Owen Stanski, and Sydney Ziemba. Eighth Grade Graduates are: Christopher Arthur, Lisa Cucchiara, Catherine Evanko, Emma Evanko, Jack Evanko, Dana Fabiano, Taylor Jamieson, Madison Kelly, Nina Lew-is, Marion Mathew, Hannah Nacamuli, Catherine O’Brien, Amelia Puglia, James Quartuccio, Hannah Redrup, Casey Roskowski, Kenneth Rudin, Jason Solomon, Sarah Upwood, Daniel Uss, Stella Dabrowski Wheeler, Levi Yoder, and James Zeolla. SUNDAY REFLECTION: WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM? (Luke 9:18-20)

In 1896, after fifteen centuries, Athens renewed the Olympic Games, thus ful-filling the dream of Baron Pierre de Coubertin of France. You can imagine how proud the Greeks were to host the first modern Olympics. You can also imagine how disappointed they were at their athletes' lack of success in event after event. The last competition was the marathon. Greece's entrant was named Louis, a shepherd without competitive background. He'd trained alone in the hills near his flock. When the race started, Louis was far back in the pack of marathoners. But as the miles passed, he moved up steadily. One by one the leaders began to fal-ter. The Frenchman fell in agony. The hero from the United States had to quit the race. Soon, word reached the stadium that a lone runner was approaching the are-na, and the emblem of Greece was on his chest! As the excitement grew, Prince George of Greece hurried to the stadium entrance where he met Louis and ran with him to the finish line. In this sports tale we have something of the history of the human race. Jesus Christ started from way back in the pack. He was born in relative obscurity, never had many followers, commanded no army, erected no edifices, wrote no books. He died young, was buried in a borrowed grave, and you'd think he'd be quickly forgot-ten. But, no! His reputation has grown, so that today he is worshiped on every con-tinent, has more followers than ever before and sixteen times has had his picture on the cover of Time magazine, while his sayings have been translated into more than 200 languages. Consider: Socrates taught for forty years, Plato for fifty, and Aristotle, forty. Jesus Christ only taught for three years. Yet which has influenced the world more, one hundred thirty years of classical thought or three years of Christ's? In the Library of Congress there are 1,172 reference books on Wil-liam Shakespeare, 1,752 on George Washington, 2,319 on Abe Lincoln, and 5,152 on Jesus Christ. Perhaps H. G. Wells best summed up the runaway difference in interest. "Christ," he wrote, "is the most unique person of histo-ry. No man can write a history of the human race without giving first and foremost place to the penniless teacher of Nazareth." As Emerson once not-ed, "The name of Jesus is not so much written as PLOUGHED into the histo-ry of the world." Today’s Gospel reveals his true identity and describes what one must do to follow him. So now, what is your personal response to: “WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?”
