This past June, Pope Francis

released his long awaited

encyclical on the environment

called Laudato Si (On Care

for Our Common Home). In

this encyclical, addressed to

“every person living on this

planet”, Pope Francis appeals

for an inclusive dialogue

about how we are shaping the

future of our planet. He calls

the Church and the world to

acknowledge the urgency of

our environmental challenges

and to join him in embarking

on a new path. (USCCB)

(usccb.org). In truth, I have

read very little of it. But as I

read more, I hope that we can

dialogue about what Francis

is inviting us to. Below are

the first two paragraphs and

one can see how he is setting

the foundation for his thesis.

It is followed by the prayer

with which Francis concludes

the encyclical. No matter our

outlook on the cause of our

current situation, I’m certain

we can meet in that prayer on

common ground. I hope this

small taste gives you a desire

to seek out more of what

Pope Francis is sharing with

us.

“Praise be to you, my Lord”. In

the words of this beautiful

canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi

reminds us that our common

home is like a sister with

whom we share our life and a

beautiful mother who opens

her arms to embrace us.

“Praise be to you, my Lord,

through our Sister, Mother

Earth, who sustains and governs

us, and who produces various

fruit with coloured flowers

and herbs”.

This sister now cries out to us

because of the harm we have

inflicted on her by our irre-

sponsible use and abuse of

the goods with which God has

endowed her. We have come

to see ourselves as her lords

and masters, entitled to plunder

her at will. The violence present

in our hearts, wounded by

sin, is also reflected in the

symptoms of sickness evident

in the soil, in the water, in the

air and in all forms of life.

This is why the earth herself,

burdened and laid waste, is

among the most abandoned

and maltreated of our poor;

she “groans in travail”

Rom 8:22). We have forgotten

that we ourselves are dust of

the earth (cf. Gen2:7); our

very bodies are made up of

her elements, we breathe her

air and we receive life and

refreshment from her waters.

A prayer for our earth

All-powerful God, you are

present in the whole universe

and in the smallest of your

creatures. You embrace with

your tenderness all that exists.

Pour out upon us the power

of your love, that we may

protect life and beauty.

Fill us with peace that we may

live as brothers and sisters,

harming no one.

O God of the poor, help us to

rescue the abandoned and

forgotten of this earth, so

precious in your eyes.

Bring healing to our lives,

that we may protect the world

and not prey on it, that we

may sow beauty, not pollution

and destruction.

Touch the hearts of those

who look only for gain at the

expense of the poor and the

earth.

Teach us to discover the worth

of each thing, to be filled with

awe and contemplation, to

recognize that we are profoundly

united with every creature as

we journey towards your infinite

light.

We thank you for being with

us each day. Encourage us,

we pray, in our struggle for

justice, love and peace.

Join us next week as our readings’ focus is: “God gives us the strength to follow him.” When the Israelites escaped Egypt and sought a new life, God gave them quail in the evening and manna in the mornings to they could be strong for their journey across the desert. Similarly, Jesus gives us the gift of himself in the Eucharist so that we might have the strength and grace needed to persevere as we walk our pilgrim journey of faith on earth.

Good news on our Honduras Project!

The medical clinic in Toncontin, Honduras has passed the one year mark of operations. To insure that the clinic is able to continue in the future, we must solidify our support with our contact that helps us clear our containers through customs in the port city of Puerto Cortes, Raul Roque. Roque has helped us and many other projects in the past, but suffered greatly in the last year of turmoil in Honduras.

We are sending a container in mid-September full of medical supplies as well as funds to Roque, who will distribute them to the local hospitals. We also wish to send school supplies, which are always desperately needed. An upcoming bulletin insert will describe the entire project further, but we ask all of you for immediate help with the school and medical supplies.

Altar Server Training

We will have altar server training for anyone interested in serving for week-end Masses. Children (those who have finished 4th grade), or any adults who wish to serve with their children. It is a great way to serve God and assist Father at Mass. Training will be from 6:00 – 7:00 pm on August 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.

It’s Coming!

The Kiel Picnic is almost here. Sign up sheets are on the back table in church for you to volunteer to help at the stand. Shifts are just 2 1/2 hours each. (Starting Monday, August 3 the sign-up sheets will be in the rectory office.) Students are invited to volunteer, but must be at least 13. Because we don’t always have correct phone numbers for families, our callers will NOT be contacting you, but watch for a postcard this week with details in the mail

instead. If for some reason you don’t get a postcard and would like to bring a pie or torte, feel free to bring it

to the stand at any time. Anyone can make a pie/torte for our pie stand, not just the ladies from our parish!

Surnames beginning with the letter ’A’ are asked to bring their pie/torte at 6 pm on Thursday. Surnames beginning with the letter ’B-E’ can bring them at 5 pm on Friday; ’F-L’ at 10:30 am on Saturday; and ’M-Z’ are asked to bring them at 11 am on Sunday. If those times don’t work for you, feel free to bring your pies any of those four days. If you have any questions, please contact Helen Brost (693.3366).

Joe McCarey Benefit

A benefit is taking place this Sunday, July 26 for Joe McCarey of MC’s Pub & Grill starting at 10:30 am. The benefit is to help with Joe’s medical expenses after doctors found and are treating 2 brain aneurysms in March.

During the benefit, 4th Street will be closed from Fremont Street to the alley. This may affect traffic behind church that day, so please be patient and plan accordingly.

All are welcome to show your support and stop in for lunch/dinner and enter for a chance to win some of the many raffles prizes. Please keep Joe and his family in your prayers.

The Holyland Of WI Travelers Will Be On The Move

Again……

You are invited to join us for a tour of churches in Milwaukee on Thursday, August 27, 2015. Leaving Fond du Lac from Festival Foods parking lot with coffee and treats at 7:30 AM. Leave cars along Hwy 23 (Johnson St) near the Kwik Trip

parking lot. The plan is to be back in Fond du Lac about 5:30.

The 1st stop will be Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Menomonee Falls to view the 500 Christmas nativity scenes and hear a presentation. Next stop will be the beautiful St Josephat Basilica on 6th St. We will have lunch at BUCA Italian restaurant. I will be taking your order from a choice of several items

when you make your reservation for the trip.

After lunch we will go over to the St John the Evangelist Cathedral for a tour. Then we will go over to Waukesha to the Schoenstat retreat center after that we will be on our way home, and if time permitting there may be an ice cream stop. I was informed that there are gift shops at all the places, so

you can be prepared.
