Dear Friends, This week will be a bittersweet week as our parishes adjust to our new Area Catholic Communities. As I was praying about the parting words for our last bulletin together, I was reminded of the prayer that the priest prays over the Easter Candle every year at Easter: “Christ yesterday and today, the beginning and the end, Alpha and Omega, all time belongs to him, and all the ages; to him be glory and power through every age forever.”

Brothers and sisters, although change is always constant, Jesus is always constant in the change. He is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Heb 3:8) and He has promised to be with us always (Matthew 28:20). Our adjustments will be uncomfortable, and we may at times feel vulnerable, but we never have to be afraid. Jesus is in control, He has a plan, and He can be trusted.

God has abundantly blessed our time together. He has used these last three years to form us, stretch us, and build us so that He could commission us for something new. St. John Paul II al-ways reminded the Church that to be a Christian is to be a mis-sionary. It is not enough for us to discover Christ-we must bring Him to others!

Our new Area Catholic Communities will provide new ways for us to evangelize! There will be new relationships to build and new opportunities for growth. Regardless of what the structures will look like, the call for all of us will be the same: to know Jesus and to share Jesus.

In these times of change, let’s look to Christ the Unchanging One to guide us in our next steps. When we heed the words of the Blessed Mother at Cana and “do whatever He tells us” miracles take place and His glory is revealed!

Brothers and sisters, it’s time to step out in faith to future full of hope!

God bless you!

Prayer for our new bishop Heavenly Father, you sent Jesus to shepherd your people and the Holy Spirit to make your people one. Look with favor upon those who will select our new bishop. Give them your vision and let their judgment be clear. Speak your will to them. We thank you for our past shepherds and the blessings they have been for the people of this diocese. Lord, send your Holy Spirit to anoint our new bishop that he may continue the work of renewal in the Church, and unite our parishes, priests and people in love, truth and wisdom. Give him a true shepherd’s heart like that of Jesus, that he may give strength to the weak, heal the broken hearted, console the lonely, bring back the wandering and be a power against the evil of our day. In the powerful name of Jesus we pray. Amen

On June 29th, the Catholic Church celebrates saints Peter and Paul, monumental spiritual figures in the early church. The decision to honor them on the same day was enacted as early as the year 258, even if they sometimes had to work to get along. While Peter and Paul ultimately shared endless love for Christ, they share different but faltering starts: Peter made many serious mistakes, and was Jewish; before his conversion, Paul was a Roman Pharisee persecuting Christians, and in the Gospels, we observe him holding the cloaks of the men who stoned St. Stephen after his fearless testimony before the Sanhedrin. This is a perfect feast day to meditate on these two martyrs, and their work as preachers, writers and evangelist who strove to bring the claim of Christ’s truth to Jews and Gentiles. We should ponder too, the idea that Heaven often chooses imperfect souls for conversion and sanctification to bring about the coming of the Kingdom. Like Paul, who experienced God as a flash of light when he was knocked off his horse, we must keep in mind that quitting is not an option! Human weakness leads us to fall, and what matters is getting back up again and again, dusting off the errors of sin, and moving forward continuously towards Jesus. St. Augustine’s description in 395 of these two great men are clear, and only need repeating:

Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one. Peter went first, and Paul followed. And so we celebrate this day made holy for us by the apostles’ blood. Let us embrace what they believed, their life, their labors, their sufferings, their preaching, and their confession of faith. ~Jeff Johnson
