While on his way to Brazil in 2013, Pope Francis remarked: “How important grandparents are for family life!” A somewhat ironic statement considering he was on his way to World Youth day! Francis spoke about grand‐parents because the feast for that day (July 26th) was the Feast day of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus Christ! For us, this Sunday is July 26th, and if that day did not fall on the 17th Sunday of ordinary me, then today we would be celebra ng the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne. So, I thought it appropriate that this week I offer a reflec on on grandparents.

First a li le background: Saints Joachim and Anne are the father and mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary. They are also the patron saints of Holy Marriages and Holy Families as well as the patron saints of Grandparents.

Jesus has grandparents. And since Mary is truly the Mother of God that would make saint Anne the Grandmother of God! How beau ful to reflect on Jesus’s family life from the perspec ve of his grandparents. How o en did Jesus go over for a meal at grandma’s house? How o en did he embrace his grandpa in a bear hug? How o en did he receive the encouragement that only a wise, caring grandparent’s voice can give? What lessons and values did Joachim and Anne pass on to their grandchild, who turned out to be the long‐awaited Messiah and the Son of God? And how much pain Jesus must have experienced when they le their earthly life.

We all have grandparents. Perhaps some of us even have the privilege of being a grandparent! And while we may not all have had the opportunity to get to know our grandparents, we have all been influenced by them. We have all received their life and their values. In a unique way, grandparents offer their empathy, encouragement, generosity, life experience, wisdom and most importantly their own stories to their grandchildren. Pope Francis also had this to say on the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, “Children and the elderly build the future of peoples: children because they lead history forward, the elderly because they transmit the experience and wisdom of their lives.” May we always thank God for the wisdom and special love our grandparents and our elders. The same wisdom and love offered by Joachim and Anne to Jesus.

Saints Joachim and Anne, Pray for us!
