Front Range Region Confirmation Service
Saturday, June 8, 10:00 a.m.
Christ the King will be hosting this year’s confirmation service for the region, the
first time our new bishop, the Rt. Rev. Kym Lucas, will be coming to the Front
Range Region. A total of thirteen churches from the region will be bringing 83
people to be confirmed, received, or reaffirmed, including nine from Christ the
King. Because of the large number of people, the Rt. Rev. Dan Edwards, retired
Bishop of Nevada, will be here to assist Bishop Kym.
Many members of Christ the King have already begun preparations to welcome
our guests. They have been busy cleaning the kitchen, painting Kempsell Hall,
preparing the chapel for Bishop Kym to meet with candidates, and preparing the
altar and sanctuary for the service itself. Both our handbell and Worshiping Voic-
es choirs will be presenting special music; the vocal choir will be joined by choir
members from St. James Episcopal Church in Wheat Ridge.
Please be sure to offer your congratulations to the members of Christ the King
who are participating in this service: Those being confirmed: Bob DeLong, Glenn
Pladsen, Barbara Rhoades, Kit Ryan; those being received: Christine Foster, Phil
Goodman, Paul Valdez; those reaffirming vows: Byron Giezentanner and Linda
Palmer.
Pentecost Sunday Celebration
June 9, 2019, 9:00 a.m.
On Pentecost Sunday, the Church celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit to the dis-
ciples, as recorded in the second chapter of Acts. This year, we will also be cele-
brating the gift of our handbell choir director, Martha Jones, as she steps down
from the position she has held for 40 years. This choir was started by Martha’s
mother, Ruth Kempsell, and has played regularly at Christ the King since 1966.
Andi Smith, our Music Director, will be taking over Martha’s responsibilities this
fall so that we can keep this tradition alive.
We will be holding just one service on this Sunday, followed by a reception spon-
sored by the Chi Rho Handbell Choir. Please mark your calendars to join us for
this special occasion—and be sure to wear red!

Welcome to Albert Daviou,
our Sabbatical Interim
The Rev. Albert G. Daviou, an Episcopal priest canonically resident in
the Diocese of Atlanta, begins his ministry here on Monday, June 17.
Albert will join us for worship on June 16; his first Sunday will be June
23. He will be available for any pastoral emergencies, and will be in the
office at Christ the King on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In addition, he
will be leading the Bible study group on Tuesday afternoons. Albert can be reached by
email, by phone at 404-545-9752, or by calling the church office and leaving a message
for him.
Albert and his wife Pat relocated in Broomfield, Co. in January of 2019 after he retired
from full time ministry 2 years before. Albert and Pat have a son and 2 grandchildren in
Boulder, the magnet drawing them to the mountains. They have another son, daughter-in-
law, and grandson in Atlanta; hence Pat’s frequent visits to DIA.
Albert has served parishes in the dioceses of Western Michigan, Atlanta, Western Massa-
chusetts, and most recently the Central Gulf Coast. They moved here from Navarre, Flori-
da where they spent the first 2 years of their retirement. Pat is an Occupational Therapist
who spent the last 20 years leading up to her retirement in various capacities at Shepherd
Center in Atlanta. Shepherd is a sister institution to the familiar Craig in Denver.
Pat and Albert met 50 years ago in Denver. When not worshipping here, Pat and Albert
attend St. John’s Boulder where they are part of the hiking ministry. Albert has been li-
censed by the Rt. Rev. Rob O’Neill to serve in the Diocese of Colorado. He was ordained
priest in December of 1983 and received his M.Div. from Seabury-Western Theological
Seminary, Evanston, Illinois.
Canticle Schedule for the Summer
This summer, the Canticle will have a June-July edition and an August-September edi-
tion. Please send in the information for the August-September edition to Barbara Jen-
nings or to the church office.
Consecration of The Rt. Rev. Kym Lucas
On Sunday, May 12, Luke Cross picked the names of three people
to receive our parish passes to the consecration service. Cathy
Goodman, Mary Jo Ryan, and Dan Mondragon attended the ser-
vice, along with a few other familiar faces. Our drawing netted
$221 towards “refreshing” Kempsell Hall. Thanks to Dan
Mondragon, who took the picture.
Gift Card Sales
Just a reminder that Barbara Jennings will be on hand to sell gift cards through the
summer on the first and third Sundays of each month. And if you haven’t yet linked up
your King Soopers Loyalty Card with Christ the King, please do so as soon as possible.
We earn 5% of all your King Soopers purchases. Our number is LM737; go to http://

“Season of Change”
Dear People of God,
During the Easter season (all 50 days of it), we celebrate the beginning of new life. This year, though, we have also
marked—and celebrated—the end of life for three different people: Eric Valdez, brother of Paul Valdez, Phil Pilgrim,
son of Jean Thayer, and Barbara Rhyne, wife of Charlie Rhyne.
But we have also been able to witness and celebrate the marriage of Kama Linscome and Harry Mitchell and the conse-
cration and ordination of our new bishop, Kym Lucas. Before this season is over, we will also welcome new members
into the Episcopal Church through confirmation and reception, witness the reaffirmation of faith of long-time members,
and celebrate the ministry of Martha Jones, Director of the Chi Rho Handbell Choir. Finally, on June 16, we will intro-
duce our interim priest, the Rev. Albert Daviou, as I prepare to leave for my sabbatical. It is, above all else, a season of
change.
Several people have asked if I am willing to say how I am spending my time. I have a general outline, but part of my
hope is that I can actually be somewhat unscheduled. I will be spending time with my three daughters and my grand-
children, who live in central Massachusetts, western New York , and New Hampshire. I will also stop in Wisconsin to
see my mom and some of my husband Andy’s family, and along the way I hope to catch up with some old friends. After
a couple of weeks exploring unfamiliar parts of Colorado, I’ll be going to Montana to see my siblings and cousins, then
spending a month volunteering as a cook at Ring Lake Ranch in Wyoming. While I have a lot of destinations to reach, I
do expect to be able to take enough time along the way so that I can appreciate the journey—and that is a real luxury for
me.
I want to take a moment now to thank all of the people that are making this sabbatical time possible for me, especially
our wardens, Byron Giezentanner and Bob Mickelson, the members of the Vestry who will be overseeing parts of my
usual work, our staff members, Mary Weekley, Andi Smith, and Ros Patterson, and all of the people who are stepping up
to help.
I look forward to being back with you all in September, and I leave you with this benediction:
“May the Lord watch between me and thee, while we are absent, one from another.”
In God’s peace,
Becky +
Worship Team

A Musical Note
Another season has passed for the music team here at Christ the King. Both vocal and hand bell choirs will be on hiatus for
the summer. And both will resume in the fall after Labor Day. If you think about the number of people in both groups
(which probably is around 25 and includes those who fill in as needed) . . . and you figure that each group meets weekly
from September through May . . . and that each practice will run approximately 1 ½ hours . . . and sometimes extra rehears-
als are thrown in as needed . . . ummm, that adds up to a lot of time. Please take a moment to thank each of these people for
the time that each one gives to this ministry. Without their commitment and dedication, we wouldn’t have a vocal choir or a
hand bell choir. To each of you ringers and singers, I say: Thank you so much for the work you so
lovingly put into what you do and for blessing this congregation with the gifts you graciously share with us. To the congre-
gation I say: Thank you for the support you have shown for the people who make this ministry possible. I am grateful for
the opportunity to work with all of you and look forward to what lies ahead.

Godly Play Continues through Summer
June 9, June 23
July 14, July 28
How would you describe Godly Play? It isn’t really a class—at least not in the sense that children sit around a table and get
told things by a teacher. It’s more like a time of directed experiences that help our 4 to 6 year olds know that they are loved
and cherished by God. And yes, the children get to play, for that’s the best way for children to learn. Katie Fendel leads
our children in Godly Play.

Open Plate Offering for June
Generation to Generation Capital Campaign for Cathedral Ridge In 2016, the Episcopal Church in Colorado began a capital campaign to improve The Center at Cathedral Ridge, our Dioc-
esan camp located in the mountains west of Colorado Springs. Our vestry has voted to raise $6,000 over three years; thus
far, we have contributed $2,000. The Outreach Committee has chosen this project for the May Open Offering in order to
call everyone’s attention to the challenge.
In addition to serving as a year-round center for retreats and formation programs, this project represents a major long-term
commitment by our Diocese to reach out to all young people, regardless of religious beliefs or ability to pay, especially
those in underserved and at-risk populations, to provide substantive grounding in the Christian faith, develop leadership
skills and challenge youth to become faithful leaders for change in their communities and the world. Check here for more
information about Cathedral Ridge.
Rector’s Note: If any young people from Christ the King want to attend Cathedral Ridge this summer, please see me for
information; scholarship assistance is available.

The Community Table
The Community Table, formerly the Arvada Community Food Bank, provides more than just food for individuals and
families—and it extends services beyond Arvada. The Bridges to Opportunity program offers support for people working
toward self-sufficiency, and this assistance is available to people in parts of Westminster, Wheat Ridge and Golden. Fam-
ilies to self-select the groceries they need, including fresh fruits and vegetables, and throughout the school year, volun-
teers prepare extra food for students in several area schools.
There are lots of reasons for us to support The Community Table through our July Open Offering. And we welcome your
donations of toiletries and non-perishable food items as well.
Loaves and Fishes Sunday
July 28, 2019
Throughout the month of July, we will be collecting toiletries and non-perishable food items for the Community Table.
Please bring your donations to the church by Sunday, July 28. And while we highlight these donations in July, we also
accept these items each week. We keep a small supply of nonperishable items in our own outreach cupboard, and the rest
we take to The Community Table.

Gift Cards Help Support Our Parish!
It’s true! Every time you use a gift card purchased here at the church—through Shop with Scrip,
Safeway, or King Soopers, you help support the ministry of Christ the King.
How do you start? It’s easy.
Safeway and King Soopers offer reloadable cards ($20), available through
the church office (303-424-5288; [email protected]) or any Sunday morning.
We receive a rebate of 4 - 5% every time you reload your card.
Shop with Scrip offers gift cards from hundreds of familiar retailers, in amounts that vary from $10 to
$500. Some of these cards are also reloadable, and all can be ordered from Barbara Jennings on Sunday
mornings. Rebates to the church range from 1.5% to 18%, depending on the retailer.
The money from these gift cards programs is directed to our operating budget and it is a really easy way to help
support our church. Through April, 2019, CTK has earned $2,062.82.
