Women’s Day Lunch Celebration Of ‘Girl Power’

The Phoenix’s lunch at the Bowling Club on Thursday to celebrate women world-wide was a fantastic display of ‘girl power’. 48 women from near and far attended including the Canowindra High and Canowindra Public School Principals who were accompanied by students from Canowindra High. Phoenix Editor Rhi Quinn opened the event and was followed by First Speaker, Tamara James, from our sponsor PulseHR, who spoke of women in the workforce. A delicious frit-tata was served up by Kylie Lawrence which was followed by the introduction of our Guest Speaker, Ailsa Pottie, who delivered an inter-esting, enlightening and informative speech. Ailsa is the sister of Dr Catherine Hamlin, who formed the charity we raised money for at the event, and had many interesting tales to tell of young girls who had been treated at

the hospital in Ethiopia and gone on to work there… with some eventually becoming mid-wives and surgeons. After a dessert choice of strawberry or banoffee cheesecakes the raffle prizes donated by local businesses were handed out. In total $500 was raised for the charity Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (Aus-tralia), which will go towards women who suf-fer from complications after an obstructed labour. We would like to thank Ailsa for her wonderful speech, PulseHR and First Choice for sponsoring the event, Kylie Lawrence for catering, the Bowling Club for letting us use the space for free, the businesses who kind-ly donated raffle prizes and thank you to all the ladies who came along and showed their support for women all over the world and for this worthwhile charity. LettersDear Editor,In Letters, issue 331 (Thursday 26 February, 2015) of The Canowindra Phoenix, Robert Sherwood has put forward the rather glib comment strongly supporting construction of the proposed Cranky Rock Dam. This is on the premise that “it was as logical in the 1950s as it is today” and “why not get on with it and stop prevaricating”. May I point out to your readers that the 1950’s logic, to which Mr Sherwood refers, is no longer applicable or valid today. World-wide, in the 21st Century, we note the increas-ing stress and failure of ecosystems and the rising controversy associated with human in-terference with the arterial flow of natural wa-terways. An example of ecosystem collapse is the case of Easter Island, which led to the demise of that civilisation. A parallel is often drawn between Easter Island and the planet today. I believe that the prevarication which he sug-gests is occurring is actually deep and careful assessment of this proposal. Dams frequently

do not provide the outcome initially promised, when weighed against the enormous cost of construction. Additionally, for a number of rea-sons dams are another of the many threats to which our ecosystems are exposed. Among other threats are overpopulation and defor-estation, which in turn lead to climate change. Mr Sherwood has already pointed out one environmental problem with the Cranky Rock proposal, that of flood mitigation restricting the deposition of pasture enriching silt down-stream. This is only one of the many problems associated with this proposal and dams are certainly no longer the flavour of the month in enlightened environmental circles. Dams must be considered as an experiment, the results of which may not being fully evi-dent for perhaps hundreds of years. It may be time to consider that if, as humans, we can’t control the level of rainfall then perhaps we should carefully assess whether we should be aiming for population and industrial expansion in areas where the amount of water is the lim-iting factor rather than just shifting the prob-lem by building another dam. The other option is to secure and conserve water by means other than construction of a new dam on the Belubula and thinking a lot smarter than mere bulldozer mentality.

Canowindra Bus Stop Make Over- Mem-ber for Orange, Andrew Gee was in town on Friday to announce that $9,220 will go towards an upgrade for our worn down bus shelter under the latest round of the NSW Government’s Regional Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Grants Scheme. Mr Gee was joined by Mr Hopkins and Greg Treavors of Cabonne Council to make the an-nouncement. “I’m pleased that Canowindra will benefit from this funding which will be delivered in partnership with Cabonne Shire Council,” Mr Gee said, “the funding will be used to upgrade the bus shelter on Blatch-ford Street, opposite the Canowindra Ser-vices Club, with Council contributing $1,000 towards the $10,220 project.”

Crowe Horwath Function- Local business owners and farmers gathered at the Old Vic Inn on Tuesday night to hear a presentation by John Thompson and Ivan Cunial from Crowe Horwath and Grant Chamberlain of Garden & Montgomerie. Crowe Horwath will be visiting Canowindra once a month to meet with lo-cal people in relation to any issues they may have regarding taxation, asset protection, super funds and pensions and cloud comput-ing. Grant covered the areas of succession planning, which is basically a review of op-tions to a family or business when making a decision about their future. Cloud computing was also discussed and seems to be the way of the future. Ivan is the expert and can as-sist the transition from what you’re currently using to Xero, Quickbooks or MYOB.

Last Saturday night saw the return of the 100 mile dinner to Gaskill Street and was the culmination of many months of work from the Canowindra community and the Canowindra@home Committee. Our fa-mous bendy main street was jumping……there was wonderful local food and wine, fantastic music and an amazing feeling and sense of community which was un-matched. This event, like the others has worked because it is supported by the whole community. Canowindra@home is committed to helping our town and the businesses and community grow and prosper through events like these. The Canowindra@home committee would especially like to thank the over 50 volunteers who packed and unpacked trucks, set tables (and made sure they were straight!), served guests, hung lan-terns - this list could go on. Also thank you to the business community for help-ing make the night a success by decorat-ing their shops, opening their businesses and giving us access to their shops, driveways, car parks, cool rooms, power and helped in so many other ways.

Young may be the town of cherries but its Lambing Flat Chinese Festival is growing in standing as one of this year’s must attend events. Steeped in history, the March festi-val is the second of its kind and is named after ‘Lambing Flat’ the town infamous for the riots staged by European miners against their Chinese counterparts in 1861. The fes-tival is a celebration of Chinese culture and art and will feature calligraphy, music, re-enactments and most electrifying of all, lion dancers. On Saturday the Canowindra@home team adorned Gaskill Street with coloured lanterns and decorated tables in preparation for the famous 100 Mile Dinner. The night, which sold out in minutes, attracted 272 people. President Helen Tinney emphasised that the dinner is all about showcasing local, regional and seasonal produce. “We want everyone to realise what diversity of outstanding pro-duce comes from this area. The chefs from Restaurant 92 in Bathurst have done a great job in presenting the mouth-watering menu, matched with our variety of local wines.” Vol-unteers flocked to the event to lend a hand, “we had over 50 volunteers” says Canowin-dra@home Secretary, Fumie Shortman “peo-ple just dropped in, some we didn’t even

The busi-nesses of Gaskill Street also joined the cel-ebrations, Finn’s Store hosted an art exhibi-tion with entertainment from local musicians and the Royal Hotel and The Old Vic Inn held local produce dinners. The street was alive with many speciality shops remaining open to show off their wonderful wares. “We couldn’t have done this without those people, locals, groups and business owners. We feel like it’s our best event ever, some people even want-ed to book for next year!” says Fumie.

For well over 200 years, this form of classical music has been played in homes and recital halls. Playing chamber music requires unique musical and social skills that differ from play-ing solo or in large orchestral symphonic com-positions. Goethe described chamber music as ‘four rational people conversing’ this con-versational handle has continually emerged throughout the history of the music from the 18th century to the present. Ladies Golf On Wednesday 4th March our first Par event was held, though there was no President to be seen…perhaps they had a Par event at Manildra! We had nine 18 hole players includ-ing visitor Pauline Jani, thanks for your com-pany. There were also 4 players who played 9 holes. Swimming ClubSwimming Club will hold their annual Presen-tation Night and AGM on Friday 27th March at the Services Club at 5pm. First up will be the AGM where a new committee will be elected for the new swimming season. There are a few positions available if anyone would like to volunteer their time. After this award

presentations will commence for all age groups and stroke champions.

Western Challenge League Tag Carnival12 teams have entered the Western Chal-lenge Ladies League Tag Carnival at Tom Cly-burn Oval on the 15th March. It’s shaping up to be a great day with some of the finest fe-male athletes in the Central West showcasing their skills and clubs from Group 10, Group 11 and the Woodbridge Cup taking part. The Challenge began in 2011 as the inaugural tournament which was won by Canowindra Tigers. In 2012 Bathurst St Pats took the tro-phy, 2013 was Orange Hawks turn to win and 2014 saw Orange Cyms dominate the day. A convener of the event, Andrew Pull, says “this year I can’t pick a winner but really like Lithgow as an outsider, with Orange Cyms, Eugowra and Dubbo Westside all top seeds and equal favourites for the day.” This year the tournament has changed from a Satur-day to a Sunday to support the NRL game at Bathurst Saturday afternoon. With the West-ern Challenge a fitting finale to a great week-end. Free entry to the event with kick off at 10.30am this weekend!

Men’s BowlsTwo games were played on the weekend. A major single between Dool and Peter Taylor saw Peter leading 6-3 after 6 ends but Dool got the win in the end with 31-6. Minor sin-gle between Nigel Knight and Bob Bates saw Bob eventually win the game 31-26. Mad Dog Milburn didn’t want to faze Sparky the Claw in ‘Cock Of The Walk’, based on fear Milburn had to forfeit.
