To the editor... I am writing to extend a heartfelt thank you to the local community for getting behind breast cancer awareness month and Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon. Through the support of our generous volunteers and western region locals, Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon has grown to be a great success. It is great to see so many people in the area hosting Pink Ribbon fundraisers – both new hosts and ongoing loyal supporters – and/or volunteering on our Pink Ribbon Day sites across the west of the state. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. In the west of the state alone around 189 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. This demonstrates just how valuable the support of our local community is. Best of all, those involved in Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon continue to make a difference by supporting the only charity that funds and supports the entire breast cancer journey, including research, prevention programs and support services for patients and their families. Thanks again for helping Cancer Council in its mission to defeat cancer. We are looking forward to 2013. Yours sincerely, Debbie Thornberry Community Relations Coordinator Cancer Council NSW Western Region

To the editor... Canowindra Sports Trust wishes to apologise to all sporting groups, community organisations and residents who use the oval, for the declining state in its maintenance. Following a complaint from an individual, watering the grounds has ceased until an alternative watering system can be found. Cabonne Council has been very supportive and is working with other government agencies to address the issue. Yours sincerely Barry Traves Canowindra Sports Trust

To the editor... The disabled parking sign out the front of 62 Gaskill Street was placed there by one of the contractor's labourers when the footpath along Gaskill Street was replaced some years ago. The sign was installed after the ramp was laid for the use of what was the convalescent home, now the Old Vic Inn. From the top of the ramp, the labourer paced out a distance where the disabled parking sign was positioned. Because the positioning of the sign was serving no purpose, Council then had the roadway marked to indicate disabled parking. The sign was not removed, neither was the original sign moved. Consequently the Highway Patrol that occasionally polices parking in town has been issuing tickets for fines and demerits as a result. It is hoped that Cabonne Council take this into consideration and corrects the confusion in the remediation work of Gaskill Street planned for early 2013. Yours faithfully David Bigg Canowindra

THE SILOS Arts OutWest will partner with acclaimed Sydney-based physical theatre company Legs on the Wall and Cowra-based The Corridor Project to deliver the first stage of an exciting two year performing arts project for the Cowra-Canowindra area. It’s one of 15 projects funded across the state by the NSW government via Arts NSW’s new Regional Partnerships category. The project was conceived by Canowindra couple Dylan Gower and Phoebe Cowdery of The Corridor Project, together with Legs On The Wall director Patrick Nolan. They then linked up with regional arts organisation Arts OutWest to put together the successful bid. $50,000 in funding has been received for phase one of ‘The Silos’ which will begin in 2013. The project will be a community wide program of activities: collecting local stories and developing skills in areas like aerial performance, music, theatre and multimedia. The team will now be seeking funding for the 2014 phase which will be a large scale public outdoor performance using one of the iconic grain silos in the Cowra-Canowindra area, featuring Legs on the Wall and community participants. The Corridor Project, based around a converted woolshed outside of Cowra, is being developed as a sustainable centre of creativity. The property includes accommodation, creative space and fac i l i t i e s fo r innovat ion and experimentation in the creative industries. Legs On The Wall are Australia’s leading physical theatre company with a long history of working collaboratively with communities. Legs On The Wall productions are renowned for taking risks, both physically and aesthetically; weaving music, video, acrobatics, dance, abseiling, circus and aerial imagery into stories that offer audiences a theatrical experience like no other. Stage one of ‘The Silos’ has included meetings with multiple partners in the Cowra and Canowindra communities, site visits to grain silos in the area and a presentation at Cowra Public School. Lachlan River Studios, Lachlan Valley Railway, Charles Sturt University, Cowra Council and Cowra Arts Council, amongst others, have all been involved in the planning for ‘The Silos’.

KEEP YOUR COOL IN THE HOT WEATHER With temperatures across New South Wales expected to be very hot during Summer, the Ambulance Service of NSW is urging people to take care while out and about in the heat. When temperatures start to get into the high 30s or 40s, paramedics have released some simple tips to remind people how to stay safe in the heat:  Try to stay out of the direct sun - this is particularly important for the elderly and very young;

 Drink plenty of water, and if outdoors for a long time, make sure you take a water bottle with you;

 Remember to cover up and use sunscreen - “Slip, slop, slap and wrap”;

 Be sure to wear clothing that protects you from the sun;

 Never leave children or pets shut in your car! Heat generated in a closed car can cause serious illness or even death; and

 Drinking alcohol causes dehydration and consumption should be minimised during extreme heat.

Take a few moments to check on the well-being of your elderly family and friends. Paramedics are also asking people to be aware of the heat during outdoor exercise or strenuous physical activity, especially in the middle of the day. It is also important to be aware of possible symptoms of heat exhaustion. These include: nausea and vomiting, fainting and dizziness, loss of appetite, weakness, and/or headache. If any of these symptoms occur, lay the person down, apply cool wet towels around the neck and under the arms and have them drink cool fluids. If the person does not respond to treatment or they have severe symptoms like confusion or collapse, call Triple Zero 000 immediately and ask for Ambulance.

CABONNE’S FUTURE DIRECTION A number of wide-ranging issues likely to affect Cabonne Shire over the next four years were discussed at a two-day Future Directions Forum in Canowindra this week. The forum brought councillors and senior staff together to examine key issues and priorities and put them into context with the council’s recently adopted Cabonne 2025 Community Strategic Plan. Mayor Ian Gosper said the forum, which was professionally facilitated, would provide extremely valuable input into the preparation of the council’s next budget. “It was an intense program which, amongst other things, examined the services we provide and the manner in which we provide them to our ratepayers and residents,” Cr Gosper said. The Mayor said teamwork and a united approach to issues had become characteristic of Cabonne Council and this had been strengthened by the forum. “Our teamwork approach involves both councillors, staff and the community,” he said. “When you have unity in an organisation you can achieve more, and I’m really excited about what we will be able to achieve over the next four years.” General Manager Andrew Hopkins commended both councillors and staff for their commitment and enthusiastic participation during the forum. He said the success of the event was largely due to the input of staff and thanked them for the work and time they had devoted to the forum. “This forum was very aptly named because it will help to guide Cabonne’s direction in coming years,” Mr Hopkins said. Cr Gosper thanked Canowindra businesses for their excellent hospitality, “It provided councillors, particularly those new to council, with a great opportunity to experience what Canowindra has to offer.”

BOTTLER OF A CHRISTMAS Canowindra Bottle Shop owner Annette Smith and her team have been busy over the last few months refurbishing the store to create a more modern space and increase the display area. With a fresh coat of paint and a new wine racking system which holds over 2,000 bottles of wine, the store appears bigger and easier to browse for your favourite tipple. The Bottle Shop stocks and promotes local Canowindra wines all year round but especially at Christmas time as they make ideal presents for friends and family living elsewhere. Annie has the full range of Tall Poppy Gourmet sauces, produced in the region by Virginia Enzerink of Cowra, which includes preserves and dressings, made from all natural ingredients and are gluten free. Local Rosnay Organic olives, fig preserve and fig syrup are also available. These items make excellent additions to unique local Christmas hampers for friends, teachers' gifts or corporate presents. Call in and take advantage of the regular discounts on beer, wine and spirits leading up to Christmas, and pick up a current catalogue of weekly specials. In-store is a range of gift packs including VOK Chocolate Liqueur, Galliano Ristretto with pewter cocktail shakers, miniature assorted Baileys packs, Frangelico packs, Gentleman Jack packs, Tia Maria with glasses packs, Tullamore Dew packs and much more. SCHOOL LIBRARY BOOKS In preparations for the school holidays, all Canowindra schools are asking students, parents and carers to hunt out any library books that may be gathering dust somewhere in your home. If you would please return all school library books before the break it would be greatly appreciated. It would be rather expensive to try and replace all the books that are out on loan, so don't be embarrassed, it will make all the books very happy to get together again for the holidays.

The Hon John Cobb MP

Federal Member for Calare FEDERAL ROUNDS Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food Security

Monday 3rd December 2012

Coalition commits to diabetes research: A Coalition Government would put $35 million towards diabetes research, is a great win for people living with type 1 diabetes in Calare. I had the pleasure of sharing this announcement with our region’s delegates from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Canberra last week. Abbie Wren, of Orange and Georga Nonnenmacher, of Cudal were picked by the JDRF to visit Parliament House as part of Diabetes Awareness Month, and I was thrilled to be able to show my support and that of my colleagues for diabetes research and increasing aware-ness. Type 1 diabetes is a life-long auto-immune disease that usually occurs in childhood but can be diagnosed at any age. Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in children and most newly diagnosed cases are in people less than 15 years old. More than 122,000 Australians have type 1 diabetes including 20,000 children, and more than 1000 in our electorate of Calare. The Coalition has long recognised the value of the JDRF which brings together the very best of Australia’s medical talent to tackle this critical health problem. Federal Parliament over for another year: Federal Parliament has finished for 2012, and unfortunately it ended as it began, with a Government in chaos, too busy dealing with various scandals to formulate, let alone deliver good policy for Australia. The cost of living continues to soar, and according to local charities, more and more people – even working families are doing it tough and struggling to stay afloat. The Prime Minister’s announcement this week of plans to cut power bills are laughable. If the Prime Minister really wants to do something about electricity prices, she should drop the Carbon Tax – it’s partly to blame to soaring power prices because that is what is was designed to do. I know the people of Calare will not be fooled by this pathetic olive branch. And as the Government continues to fumble with scandal after scandal, more boats continue to arrive on their watch. Since coming to power, this Government has overseen more than 250 boat arrivals to Australia, carrying a staggering 30,500 people – that’s more than the populations of Oberon, Blayney, Parkes and Forbes combined. Yet, in the face of a monumental failure in border protection policies, the Government remains stubborn and refuses to fix the problem. I certainly hope for a more positive and proactive Parliament in 2013. Be swim safe this summer: With the recent hot weather, it’s timely to think about being safe around pools and when swimming this summer, as well as ensuring our kids know about water safety – and not just for young kids, but older kids and young adults too. Royal Life Saving estimates there are 600,000 young adults aged 15-24 in the community who have missed out on a water safety education and are at extreme risk of drowning. Children from remote locations, lower socio-economic areas and indigenous families are the most likely to miss out on water safety skills. I recently gave my support to Royal Life Saving’s campaign calling on State and Territory Government’s to make swimming and water safety compulsory in all Australian primary schools. I urge everyone to heed this important safety message this summer.

MATTERS OF STATE with TROY GRANT MP Member for Dubbo 3 December 2012

He was one of our bravest of brave. Pilot Officer Rawdon Hume Middleton VC is a story of true courage, determination, strength, mateship and ultimately, of human sacrifice. At the time, his feat was described as an incomparable tale of gallantry leading to the awarding of the Victoria Cross – the highest decoration for valour. Last week I had the honour of attending the unveiling of a bronze bust of Rawdon Hume Middleton near the Cenotaph at Victoria Park in Dubbo. The ceremony memorial marked the 70th anniversary of Middleton's death and his awarding of the Victorian Cross. Middleton, who was educated in Dubbo and learnt to fly at Narromine, enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1940. He was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1942. Flight Sergeant Middleton laid down his own life deliberately to save some of his crew, innocent civilians and, if possible, his aircraft. His body washed ashore at Dover on February 1, 1943 and he was buried in the churchyard of St. John’s, Beck’s Row, Suffolk, with full military honours. His example of devotion to duty will forever remain an inspiration. His legacy is recognised in the naming of many roads and streets around Australia including the nation's capital, air-force bases and the Middleton name is synonymous in Parkes. His war time achievement is worthy of greater recognition than that is sometimes accorded to other famous Australians. I was proud to feature Middleton's story in my ANZAC community brochure this year and I congratulate Dubbo City Council and Dubbo RSL Sub-branch who initiated the memorial. I congratulate Wongarbon based sculptor Brett Garling for delivering an outstanding work of art to honour our own national hero. The NSW Government will provide $4,185 in funding to repair damage at the Forbes Golf Course Reserve caused by flooding in December 2010. This is part of the State Government's commitment to improving facilities damaged by floods in regional NSW. Getting this important infrastructure back up to standard is crucial for the local community. The grant given to Forbes Shire Council is courtesy of the Natural Disaster Relief scheme. NSW Treasurer Mike Baird was in Dubbo last week to address the local community and hear their views on the future of the Cobbora Coal Mine Development. He explained in some detail the long-term benefits of the Cobbora Coal Mine and issues related to its development. The Treasurer was able to address the local community and talk though some of the issues facing the Cobbora Mine and to allay any concerns the community might have in relation to the development. Whilst the decision to develop the Cobbora mine is not straight forward, Mr Baird has made clear that it remains a priority for the Government unless and until a superior alternative is established. He also reiterated that the mine’s planning and approvals process for its development remains on track. If you know a woman or man who you think should be recognised for their leadership and contribution to their community it's time to nominate them for the 2013 NSW Women of the Year Awards. This year there is a new category, the Male Champion of Change award which recognises the role that men play in brokering change for women. The opportunity to nominate women from within the local community of the Dubbo electorate allows us to recognise the important work being done by women in our patch. There are three categories that are open for nominations from the public: The Premier’s Woman of the Year Award, for leadership and excellence, The People’s Choice Community Hero Award, for work performed in the service of the community and a new award category, the Male Champion of Change sponsored by Deloitte (open only to men). As the local Member for the Dubbo I will be nominating a woman from our community for a separate award category, the Local Woman of the Year Award. Nominations can be made now at: www.women.nsw.gov.au. Nominations close on Wednesday 5 December 2012. Congratulations to Dubbo City Council on their successful application for new project funding under NSW’s Arts Funding Program (AFP). Dubbo City Council will receive $60,000 towards the creative engagement of Apollo Estate residents through a series of art workshops. The workshops will allow residents of the estate to work with artists to reflect their aspirations, stories and experiences through various forms of art. The artworks will be showcased at a cultural event that will culminate in an interactive tour of the Apollo Estate. The NSW Government has approved $1.5 million in new projects funding to be shared by 43 arts and cultural organisations statewide. Through this funding the NSW Government is supporting the professional and artistic development of artists as well as stimulating artistic and cultural activity.

Swimming Club The thunderstorm held off for long enough although it looked close for the relay and there were some amazing swimming efforts. Toby Fisher dropped 7 seconds from his best time for the 33m freestyle. Regan Hughes won the spoon in a personal best time of 19 seconds. He now joins Jarrod Strange and Tim Wythes on 19 seconds, although Paul Sinfield took a second off his time and now swims off 18 seconds! Georgie Fisher smashed her 66m breast-stroke time by 43 seconds and Wade Kinsela was the best ‘bellyflopper’ over a number of the heats. In the relay it was the older swimmers against the rest as Lane 6 was made up of swimmers of 24 seconds and below. However after going off 124 seconds after Lane 1, Lane 6 couldn’t quite make up the difference and Lane 5 won by 3 seconds. Curtis Bennett brought home Lane 5 after swimming the first leg for Lane 4 due to a table error. To avoid table errors could all swimmers be at roll call by 5:45pm as pointscore starts this week.

NEW WHEELS FOR COMMUNITY TRANSPORT People with disabilities in the Cabonne area will have their lifestyles enhanced following the launch Friday 30 November of a new wheelchair-accessible community transport vehicle. State Member for Orange Andrew Gee officially launched the vehicle that will expand the range of services offered by Cabonne Community Transport, which provides travel for the frail-aged, disabled and transport disadvantaged. The specially fitted-out Kia Carnival, valued at $90,000, is the first of its type in the service’s fleet. Funded by Transport for NSW, it is a dual purpose van that can carry up to seven passengers when not being used by wheelchair clients. Mr Gee said the State Government was delighted to partner with Cabonne Council to provide a valuable service that was operated by volunteer drivers. “These volunteers have driven more than 100,000 kilometres in the past year and I am told that is the equivalent of two and half journeys around the world,” he said. Mr Gee said community transport offered a vital service to people who otherwise would have great difficulty attending medical and other essential appointments, “The State Government enjoys an excellent relation-ship with Cabonne Council and Cabonne Community Transport and I can tell you that NSW Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian is a strong advocate for community transport.” Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper described the launch of the new vehicle as significant milestone in the 20-year history of Cabonne Community Transport. “Initially the service was run solely on a voluntary basis, using volunteers’ cars,” Cr Gosper said. “It has continued to grow every year. We operate three dedicated vehicles, but demand is such that our volunteers often still use their own cars.” Cr Gosper paid tribute to the efforts of Molong residents Lina and Alan Moffitt, who have lobbied the government and council for several years to secure a wheel-chair accessible vehicle for the community transport service. “And while our volunteers are doing a great job behind the wheel, there is one staff member who is the driving force behind Cabonne Community Transport and that is our coordinator Margot Brown,” Cr Gosper said. “It is a huge task to make sure that every-thing runs smoothly, that drivers and clients are synchronised to ensure that people reach their appointments and destinations and that all the administrative requirements of government departments and the council are met.”
