Burke Street, Martinsburg, WV 25401-3322 OCTOBER 2015 Pastor Bob I am truly a fan of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy – both the books and the films. There is a moment in the first film in which the wizard Gandalf is just beginning to recognize the power – and the evil - of Bilbo’s magic ring. Suspicious of the ring, Gandalf sets out to investigate its origins, but not before entrusting its care to Bilbo’s nephew, Frodo, with the urgent warning, “Keep it secret. Keep it safe.” Truly, God is entrusting to us something very special and sacred in the gospel of Jesus Christ, but the last thing God would have us do is to “keep it secret” or “keep it safe.” Quite the contrary, the good news of Jesus Christ is something we are to proclaim from the housetops as we seek to be faithful to Christ’s command to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Mtt. 28:19). In the book, “Transforming Evangelism,” F. Douglas Powe, Jr. and Henry H. Knight describe John Wesley’s understanding of evangelism and how this can shape our work today. So just what did Wesley believe about evangelism? Here are just a few key points: 1. Salvation is offered to everyone. A core piece of Wesley’s theology was that Christ did not die only for the elect, but for everyone. It is God’s desire for everyone to know and receive his love in Jesus Christ. All have the power and opportunity to say yes. 2. Everyone needs salvation. Everyone needs the life that only God can give. Sin is universal and is not something we can fix on our own. Those who scoff at such a need in their own lives are like those reject not only a diagnosis but a cure. 3. We can be forgiven. By faith – and only by faith – can we discover the forgiveness God holds for us. And no one “has gone too far” and is outside the reach of God’s forgiveness. 4. We can receive a new life. Wesley believed that redemption and eternal life begin in this life. By knowing Christ, our lives are profoundly changed. 5. We can be truly happy. There is a happiness we can find in Christ which can be found in no other way. No matter how much we may surround ourselves with pleasure and enjoyment, or with family and friends, there will always be something missing. But knowing Christ truly means to “have all things.” Truly, the work of evangelism is so much more than filling pews, it is sharing Christ with another. Let us be faithful in responding to God’s love in our own lives, such that the message entrusted to us will neither be “secret” nor “safe”! Yours in Christ, Pastor Bob First, the Women's Ministry would like to thank the congregation for the tremendous response to the pill bottle collection project. Hundreds of bottles have been mailed to Matthews 25 ministries. We look forward to doing this mission project again next year. Second, we'd like report that our movie night was a fun time of popcorn and fellowship. A special thank you to Jim Holland and David Gray for joining us and helping out with logistics and technology. We hope to have another movie night in 2016. Currently, our "Beautiful Mess" Bible study is underway with ten participants. The Holy Spirit has certainly been at work at our meetings and in our hearts as we've shared in the study of God's Word and Truth. During the month of October, the Women's Ministry will officially kick off Calvary's Operation Christmas Child mission project. This is a project that Calvary has enthusiastically supported for several years. Please consider packing a shoebox or two and/or making a donation to cover the cost of shipping the boxes. Most importantly, pray for the children receiving the boxes. Details about Operation Christmas Child will be in future Sunday bulletins. Finally, our next Women's Ministry Team Meeting is slated for Wednesday, October 28th, 6:30 p.m. in the Friendship classroom. We are going to need many "hands on deck" to help plan and bring to fruition our second annual "Soup for Your Soul" Ladies Event (to be held in November). If you'd like to help with the event in any capacity (teaching, food, decorating, table favors, etc.), please plan to attend the meeting. Some of you have told me that you are praying for the Women's Ministry, and I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation for those prayers. The Women's Ministry is growing and I continue to watch with excitement to see what The Lord has in store. His Plans, His Will, His timing ... Are always perfect. THE CALVARY BEACON CALVARY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 220 W. Burke Street, Martinsburg, WV 25401-3322

OCTOBER 2015 Pastor Bob

I am truly a fan of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy – both the books and the films. Keep it safe.”

Truly, God is entrusting to us something very special and sacred in the gospel of Jesus

Christ, but the last thing God would have us do is to “keep it secret” or “keep it safe.” Quite the

contrary, the good news of Jesus Christ is something we are to proclaim from the housetops as we

seek to be faithful to Christ’s command to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Mtt. 28:19).

In the book, “Transforming Evangelism,” F. Douglas Powe, Jr. and Henry H. Knight describe John Wesley’s

understanding of evangelism and how this can shape our work today. So just what did Wesley believe about

evangelism? Here are just a few key points:

1. Salvation is offered to everyone. A core piece of Wesley’s theology was that Christ did not die only for the elect,

but for everyone. It is God’s desire for everyone to know and receive his love in Jesus Christ. All have the power

and opportunity to say yes.

2. Everyone needs salvation. Everyone needs the life that only God can give. Sin is universal and is not something

we can fix on our own. Those who scoff at such a need in their own lives are like those reject not only a diagnosis

but a cure.

3. We can be forgiven. By faith – and only by faith – can we discover the forgiveness God holds for us. And no one

“has gone too far” and is outside the reach of God’s forgiveness.

4. We can receive a new life. Wesley believed that redemption and eternal life begin in this life. By knowing Christ,

our lives are profoundly changed.

5. We can be truly happy. There is a happiness we can find in Christ which can be found in no other way. No

matter how much we may surround ourselves with pleasure and enjoyment, or with family and friends, there will

always be something missing. But knowing Christ truly means to “have all things.”

Truly, the work of evangelism is so much more than filling pews, it is sharing Christ with another. Let us be

faithful in responding to God’s love in our own lives, such that the message entrusted to us will neither be “secret” nor

“safe”! Yours in Christ, Pastor Bob

After a successful Rally Day, our children and teachers were ready to begin a new year of Bible journeys. Due to our changing numbers, we decided to reorganize. We will be using

Cokesbury’s, “Deep Blue – One Room Sunday school”. All children from Pre-school through grade 4 gather together as one crew in the larger elementary classroom. Together they begin the adventure with a craft or physical activity which helps them to begin thinking about what they will be experiencing in the Bible story. Everyone then gathers around to dive deeper into the scripture with the animated “Deep Blue Kids”, Asia, Kat and Edgar. Their Adventure helps the class to better understand the message God has given. A follow-up activity then reinforces the lesson with practical applications to their lives, church, community and the world. We are all excited about the new program and are looking forward to the group’s growth. Sunday school class meets every Sunday morning at 10:45, following the regular church service. Look for updates on the church website at CalvaryUM.org or on the Face Book page entitled Children’s Ministries at Calvary UMC. November 22, 2015 the children will be performing a program Entitled “The Gift of Christmas”. The children will be spending a portion of the Sunday school hour rehearsing from October 18 – November 15. We would love to include as many children as Calvary has to offer. This is a wonderful opportunity for the entire congregation of Calvary Church to celebrate the seasons of Advent and Christmas together. Jesus said,’Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. – Matthew 19:14

We are starting to get back into the swing of things with our fall music ministries. Please pray for all involved. I have seen some renewed interest in our choirs and I’m happy to see that we have picked up Jim and Myrtle Holland, Maria Watts and Katherine Hinson in the Chancel Choir. If the Lord has been putting it on your heart to join a music group at Calvary please just give it a try for a practice or two. We are still in need of members in our Handbell choirs. We have such a good time in rehearsals and would love to have more people join in on the fun! The Chancel Choir practices on Thursday nights at 7:00pm. The Adult Handbell Choir practices on Sundays after Sunday School. The Youth Handbell Choir practices on Sundays from 5:30 to 6:00pm. We have already gotten our season off to a great start with a great hymn sing last month. I have received a lot of positive feedback from this service and some requests to have another one in the future. Feedback is always appreciated. As you probably know, Pastor Bob has started a sermon series entitled “Renegade Gospel: The Rebel Jesus.” I am making a concerted effort to coordinate our music to be in sync with the message. Last month the Chancel Choir sang “Leaning on the Rock of Ages” which combined “Lead Me to That Rock, Rock Of Ages and Leaning On The Everlasting Arms.” This anthem echoes the parable that Jesus taught about the one who built his house on solid ground. On October 4th we sing a powerful anthem by Pepper Choplin called “You are the Christ.” (By the way, this is the answer to “The Most Important Question.”) Then on October 11th we will sing “For the Least” which in true renegade fashion calls us to serve our Great God by serving the least and the lost. On October 25th Pastor Bob will be preaching on the power of the resurrection so we are breaking tradition and singing a powerful Easter anthem called “Christ reveals the Power of God.” In it we sing “The light of truth at last reveals the nature of the soul. The dark no longer holds concealed the Spirit’s heavenly goal.” Amen! It is a powerful gospel we preach! This idea of a rebel Jesus is one that has intrigued me for a while. I remember seeing one of those TED talks and an atheist was asked to provide his thoughts on Christianity. His response was, “I think it’s great. I’m still waiting for them to put it into practice.” Ouch! His basic point was that he didn’t see Christians selling all their possessions to support the poor and sick, reaching out to the outcasts, the prisoners, etc. to the point that it showed a marked difference from the average non-churched person. We can debate the truth of that statement but what we really learn from this is that the world is impressed by radical, self-sacrificing love. Undeserved, unmerited love that makes no rational sense. Why does this impress them? Because it is the love they don’t have but desperately want! Reading the Sermon on the Mount you find tons of easy to understand, hard to live statements like “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” To follow these teachings requires a change in the core of our spirit. How can we change the world before He changes us? May the rebel Jesus challenge and change you today! Mark Albright Jesus told His followers, "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me." - Matthew 5:11
