Dear PJHS Parents/Guardians, The 2017-18 school year has been an outstanding year for our students. It is amazing to watch the growth of our students in so many areas of their lives during the school year. In a short time our 8th grade students will be going to the high school and our 7th grade students will become the leaders at PJHS. Our teachers have continually commented to me on how they are impressed by the talents that our students have academically, athletically, and artistically. Make sure to check the announcements and calendar for the many events scheduled at the end of the school year. Several of these events are to recognize the many student accomplishments and involvement in differents clubs or organizations. I want to personally thank the following nine staff members who are not returning to PJHS next year. These individuals include: Mr. Patrick Barrett, Mrs. Sandi Custar, Mr. Dwight Fertig, Mr. Robert Knurek, Mrs. Jennifer Miller, Mrs. Lisa Nunn, Mrs. Julie Razoog, Miss Nicole Schlagheck and Mrs. Kamilyn Smith. Their dedication and caring for Perrysburg Junior High students is greatly appreciated. They will be sorely missed. We wish them the best of luck in their new personal and professional endeavors. Lastly, I would like to say thank you to all parents and guardians for your support of your child during the school year. The success of students in school is truly a partnership between all stakeholders involved in each child’s education. STUDENT COUNCIL AT PJHS REACHING OUT

Student Council has been busily rapping up the 2017-2018 school year.

Recently Student Council organized the first-ever PJHS Lock In and there was a great turn out! Over 100 7th and 8th graders came to PJHS to spend the evening dancing, singing, playing giant board games, video-gaming and enjoying open gym activities with their friends. The money raised from the Lock In will go towards future Student Council events to help promote school spirit and fun at PJHS.

Also, earlier this year, Student Council asked community members to donate gently used soccer equipment to a community in Gambia, Africa. These items have recently been delivered to Gambia, and as seen in the image above, the recipients were very thankful for the donations.

If you have any questions or ideas for PJHS Student Council, please contact Corinne Roach at [email protected].

The Golden Jackets (PJHS show choir) opened the talent show with a show-stopping number from their award-winning competition set. The audience was energized with Ellie Garts’ twirl routine and Kiana Allans’ performance of “I Don’t Love You” while playing the ukulele. Clara Burkin and Makenzie Morris captivated the audience as they performed a scene from “Romeo and Juliet”. Closing out the Talent Show was a unique act entitled “Into You,” performed by Merritt Backus who played the guitar and sang. These were only a few highlights of the outstanding performances of our amazingly talented Junior High Students.

Showcase Concert: The PJHS choirs closed out the year strong at their showcase concert May 9th. The choirs performed current pop songs and entertained the audience with their choreography. PERFORMING ARTSStrike up the BandThe end of the school year was action-packed for the PJHS Bands! Over the last few weeks our students have performed with pride and excellence while representing our school and community.

21 soloists and small ensembles performed at PJHS Band’s first ever Recital Day on Saturday, April 14th at PJHS. These students prepared music outside of class and used the skills taught in their classes to bring their music to life. Soloists collaborated with professional accompanist, Anita Wilkin, for the performance. We’re excited to see this event grow next year!

The PJHS Bands held their Spring Concert on Tuesday, April 24th. All PJHS Band students participated in an evening of music and fellowship! The 7th Grade Band and the 8th Grade Band both gave wonderful performances. Many students also participated in the reception in the gymnasium after the concert. It was great to see so many students celebrate their music education this year.

The Ohio Music Education Association held their Large Group Contest on Friday, May 4th. This event held at Anthony Wayne High School showcased the best bands in our region. Each band is rated by state adjudicators and assigned a rating based on their performance. The 7th Grade Band performed in Class B (the second highest division), and received a Superior rating. The 8th Grade Band performed in Class A (the highest division) and received an Excellent rating. These scores place the PJHS Bands in the top 5% of junior high bands in the state.

The fifth annual PJHS Band on the Run 5K took place at PJHS on Saturday, May 5th. This year’s event featured 340 runners, 66 parent and family volunteers, and over 200 PJHS and HPI Band students forming two pep bands along the route. This community event showcased our great students, families, school and community. Since its first year, the PJHS Band on the Run 5K has grown to become the second biggest 5K in NW Ohio!

Monday, May 7th saw 27 of our students rehearse and perform with the Bowling Green State University Honor Band. This experience drew students from Ohio, Indiana and Michigan together to learn a concert program in 5 hours of rehearsal and give a performance the same evening. These students spend the day on the BGSU campus and enjoyed meeting students from other areas of the midwest.

The 8th Grade Band formed the PJHS Marching Yellow Jackets and gave a terrific parade performance at Cedar Point on Friday, May 11th. Students marched around the park performing their favorite pep band song - “Louie, Louie!” After the performance, the students enjoyed a day of band fellowship in the park. The students did a wonderful job representing their school during and after the performance.

The PJHS Band year finishes with a PJHS Marching Yellow Jackets performance at the Perrysburg Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 28th. The 7th Grade Band and 8th Grade Band will combine to march down Louisiana Ave. to the tune of “America, the Beautiful”. This is one of our favorite performances. Performing while representing our school and community is the perfect way to end our year!

“YOU CAN, HANDLE THE TRUTH” WITH PJHS MOCK TRIALTeam Providence and Team Veritas of the PJHS mock trial program recently competed in the Middle School Mock Trial Showcase at the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center in downtown Columbus. Local judges and attorneys presided over the criminal trials. Each team competed twice at the Showcase, once as the prosecution side of the case and once as the defense. This year, the Ohio Center for Law Related Education put together case materials, consisting of six witness statements, based on the novel by Avi, “The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle”. Nikhil Methi won a “Best Attorney” award. Katie Osten, Brayden Hickerson and Fionna Lam won “Best Witness” awards.

Prior to the Showcase, mock trial students practiced once a week after school to learn their roles and to prepare their direct and cross-examination questions, opening statements, and closing arguments. Judge Molly Mack and her staff allowed the teams to practice at the Perrysburg Municipal Court twice in April to better prepare for the Showcase. Eight PJHS students portrayed the roles of attorneys, twelve students played witnesses and two students acted as bailiffs/timekeepers. The attorneys learned the mock trial Rules of Evidence and had the opportunity to raise objections to the opponent’s case, just like in actual trials. The witnesses memorized their parts and prepared to face challenging questions from opposing counsel on cross-examination. Participating in mock trial helped students learn how to organize materials into coherent and persuasive arguments and to think on their feet. End of the year awards for the Mock Trial team included: Most Outstanding Attorney- Raushni Bumrah, Most Outstanding Witness- Andrew Chung and Newcomer of the Year- Fionna Lam.

Team Providence was composed of attorneys Ysabella Aromas, Raushni Bumrah, Nikhil Methi and Jack Lamberger. Andrew Chung, Brayden Hickerson, Evan White, Katie Osten, Ahan Trivedi and Arthur Chen portrayed the witnesses on Team Providence. Jim Huynh acted as the bailiff and timekeeper, calling the court to order, swearing in the witnesses and informing the attorneys of their time limits.

Team Veritas comprised attorneys Adam Roberts, Daniel Mills, Lauren Gorcz and Benjamin Liederbach. Ashley Strayer, Lucas Fiscus, Nicholas Smith, Fionna Lam, Calvin Siefke and Andrew Gudgeon acted as witnesses on this team. And Diego Diaz served as the court’s bailiff and timekeeper for Team Veritas.

The coaches are very proud of the impressive progress that the students made this year. They hope that the eighth graders will continue participating in mock trial in high school and that the seventh graders will return to the junior high mock trial program next year. Newcomers are welcome and invited to try out mock trial next year at PJHS.
