PRINCIPAL’S PROSE MID YEAR STUDENT REPORTS Mid‐year student reports are being sent home today in sealed envelopes. It is up to parents to decide if and when to share these with their children. The reports are written with parents and carers as the audience. We hope you find this informative, specific and useful as a lot of time and thought goes into their preparation.   I want to thank my staff, the teachers and the office staff, for their diligence in writing, editing and printing the reports.   EDUCATION TAX REFUND A reminder that you can claim the Education Tax Refund (ETR) in your tax return for eligible school expenses. The Federal government initiative provides up to 50 per cent back on a range of children’s education expenses, such as computers, educational software, textbooks and stationery. For the 2010–11 tax year refunds may be as much as $397 for every child at primary school, and up to $794 for every child at secondary school. For more information, and to claim online, go to: www.educationtaxrefund.gov.au/  NAIDOC WEEK 2011 National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week is held from Sunday 3 July 2011 to Sunday 10 July 2011. This is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians.  There are many events during the school vacation to celebrate NAIDOC week.  Here is a link to some of these events you might like to attend. They are usually advertised in major newspapers.  http://www.naidoc.org.au/  Next Thursday we have an Aboriginal Performer, Sean Dwyer, presenting a dance and cultural awareness show for our students in three separate sessions. There won’t be an assembly next week as a result.   HOMEWORK Homework bridges the gap between learning at school and learning at home. It reinforces work done in class. It helps develop skills such as research and time management. Homework helps to establish the habits of study, concentration and self discipline. Parents/caregivers have the opportunity to see the progress of their child. Homework provides challenges and stimulus to gifted and talented children.  The basic rules of homework are that it is appropriate for each student's age and ability. Teachers should take into account students' other commitments, such as sport, the arts and home responsibilities.

There are four main types of homework  

Practice Exercises help students to remember and practise newly acquired skills ‐ such as reading practice, memorising mathematical tables, practising spelling words, writing stories and reports. Preparatory Homework requires students to source and read background information to prepare them for future lessons on a specific subject ‐ such as reading an article on the Gold Rush in preparation for a lesson in Australian history.  

Extension Assignments encourage students to pursue knowledge individually and imaginatively. Assignments may include writing a book review, researching local news or retrieving items from the Internet. Life skills tasks. These include activities related to shopping, cooking, travel, budgeting and household tasks.  Homework for Kindergarten and Year 1  In general, your child will not be expected to complete formal homework in Kindergarten. However, there are things we want you to do at home to help your child make the most of what they learn in Kindergarten and Year 1. Reading practice, word drill and letter‐sound recognition are three activities we ask you to do with your child. Reading to children at home and involving them in family activities will greatly assist the development of their skills in literacy, numeracy and problem solving. Some formal homework is usually set but there are no consequences for not completing it. At this stage we envisage parents will help with all the tasks we set and so it is more a parental than a student responsibility. For example, students may be asked to complete simple computations, to copy letters or words, or to complete an activity sheet.  Homework for Years 2‐6  Homework in Years 2 ‐6 will be varied and students will be expected to work more independently. However, teachers will still provide guidance and assistance to students having difficulties completing their homework. Much of the homework will be in English, Mathematics and Human Society and its Environment. However, it can be set across all areas of the curriculum. Students in Year 2 should do homework for about 20 minutes a day, 4 days a week and this should increase by 10 minutes each year.   So ... Year 3 = 30 min x 4 days Year 4 = 40 min x 4 days Year 5 = 50 min x 4 days Year 6 = 60 min x 4 days This does not include reading for pleasure. Parents need to provide the space, the timetable and support for their children to complete the assigned work. Students need to gradually become more responsible for their own work and by Year 6 students should be only getting assistance from parents if they seek it.  If it takes your child much longer than the suggested time you can stop them, write a note to the class teacher to say he or she worked well for the suggested time and this is how far we got. This way students will have time for play and other activities. The teacher will then become aware that the homework is too much for some students and make adjustments.  Please contact me if you have any comment about homework.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE ICAS‐INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION AND ASSESSMENTS FOR SCHOOLS On Tuesday 21 June 2011 the students completed the Spelling and Writing Competitions. They were tough competitions but do provide the opportunity for students to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external testing situation. When the results are returned to school later in the year students will receive  certificates and individual student reports indicating which questions they answered correctly and their score compared with the rest of the students tested. The students will sit the ICAS English on Tuesday 2 August 2011 and the ICAS Mathematics on Tuesday 16 August 2011.    DANCE – SYDNEY NORTH FESTIVAL at GLEN STREET THEATRE Last night was the first performance for our dance groups at the Glen Street Theatre. It was a long day for the dancers who had rehearsals from 10:00 am and had to return for their evening performance. Thank you to the parents and teachers for accompanying the dance groups and assisting with costuming, make‐ up and hair design. The junior dance group has a twilight performance today. The senior dance group has a twilight performance tomorrow and both groups perform again next Tuesday 28 June 2011.   SRC FUNDRAISER The student representative council fundraiser for term 2 was held today to raise money for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. There was an assembly for all classes at 9:15am where a representative from the Guide Dogs, spoke to the children about the importance of these incredible animals. Sarah and her guide dog Ally held a captive audience. Congratulations to all the students who wore crazy shoes and gave a gold coin for such a worthy cause.     

            

  Colourful Crazy Shoes Sarah and Ally More Colourful Crazy Shoes EXCURSIONS/INCURSIONS Throughout the term our students have participated in fantastic excursions and incursions that relate to the areas of study they have undertaken in the classroom. Kindergarten’s farm excursion, the Year 1 workers in our community incursions, the Year 2 archaeological dig excursion and Years 3 & 4 excursion to Penrith Lakes allowed each student to experience first‐hand what each topic entailed. The support of parents on these excursions and incursions ensured that the boys and girls could participate in smaller groups that maximised their learning. Thank you to staff and parents for allowing our students the opportunity to participate in these activities.   LOST PROPERTY Lost property is always a concern for teachers and parents. Every day, jackets, jumpers, hats, lunch boxes, pencil cases and raincoats are left around the school. The teachers do their best to ensure that the lost property is returned to the owners. However, this is very difficult if the items are not labelled with the child’s name and class.  I ask that parents label all articles of clothing (ties, hats, jumpers, jackets) and ensure that the labeling is checked regularly – writing fades, children change classes each year, some children wear their older sibling’s clothing without the name and class being updated. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

MULTILIT  Do you know what Multilit is? Would you like to find out how you can assist your child with reading? Mrs Cavanagh will conduct an information session on Monday 1 August 2011 at 9:15 am in the STLA room.   ‘Multilit’ (Making Up Lost Time In Literacy) program assists some of our students who need an intensive, systematic approach to help them become better readers.  The program focuses on three main areas:  � Phonics and word attack skills  � Sight words recognition  � Supported book reading in a one‐to‐one context   This program is best delivered for a short time each day. Once you are aware of the Multilit program you may be able to assist Mrs Cavanagh in delivering the program here at school.  If Monday 1 August is unsuitable but you would like to find out more about the program please contact Mrs Cavanagh via email at: jennifer.cavanagh1@det.nsw.edu.au  STUDENT WELFARE FOCUS – ‘The Values We Teach’ This week, all students K‐6 are focusing on an aspect of student welfare that relates to punctuality. The children are reminded of their responsibility to “be in the right place at the right time” which means to be in school, lines and class on time. Students must play in the supervised areas before school, at morning tea and lunch time. Students who have meetings or practices for sport, music or dance should always be punctual.   UNIFORM AWARDS The following classes achieved perfect scores in the weekly uniform check:  1M, 1F, 2C, 3Q, 3J, 5G and 6W. Congratulations are extended to the students of these classes.   ASSEMBLY Today’s 3‐6 assembly was  the last Thursday afternoon assembly for the term as next week we have an Aboriginal performer coming next week. Congratulations to the stage band and to class 5O for their entertaining performances this afternoon. The following students were acknowledge with their silver star awards, gold star awards and school banners at the assembly: 

SPORT  As the ovals were closed last Friday our PSSA teams had training at school. This included friendly netball and soccer matches between the junior girls and boys! In this week’s newsletter we have a report from our soccer and netball teams. The Macquarie University sports groups head off every Friday rain, hail or shine, the AFL coaches are able to conduct their lessons in the hall. Many of the other groups were unable to complete their sporting activities due to the wet conditions and therefore not all groups received sport awards. The following students were presented with sport awards:

PSSA NEWS Last Friday the PSSA teams decided to play each other in separate junior and senior soccer and netball matches. The girls had a lot of fun learning about soccer and the challenges of only using your feet. The boys had a great time learning the rules of netball and trying their very best not to run with the ball. We all enjoyed ourselves a lot but we hope that the sun keeps shining so that no more of our matches are cancelled.

STAGE 3 NEWS  Another action packed term for Stage 3 students.   Throughout the term, all students prepared a speech for Barry O’Farrell’s local schools’ public speaking competition. The topic this year is ‘The Chemistry has to be Right’.  Each class chose two speakers for the school final which was held on Friday 17 June.  As well as a three minute prepared speech, the students were also asked to de‐liver an impromptu speech on what makes someone famous.  Class representatives were: 5M: Luke Bryant and Ava Morrison; 5G: Rhys Ambrose and Darcy Carnahan; 5OV: Elia Parsanejad and Emma Saunders; 6F: Michael Loong and Ivan Courtney; 6A: Maddie Staas and Emma‐Jane Loong; 6W: Liam O’Reilly and Daniel Buffa. Congratulations to Daniel who has been selected as the school representative for the finals to be held on 5 September at Legislative Assembly Chamber. Thirty students from across years 5 & 6 form the APSMO (Australian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad) team. They meet each week to look at different problem solving strategies and investigate a wide range of problems, some from previous years. The second test will be done this week. The problems are quite challenging and the students should be very proud if they score well. Homework tasks have been varied and hopefully provided opportunities for families to have fun together. Some of the well‐received activities included cookie baking, testing fuel consumption and environmentally friendly cars (Year 5), charades and volunteering (Year 6). It has been wonderful to hear about the games played at home. Students enjoyed their visit to the Life Education Van. The best‐practice drug education program, smoking (Year 5) and drinking (Year 6), challenged the students’ values and attitudes and expanded their knowledge to empower them to exercise real choice – and make informed healthy lifestyle decisions. The COGS unit, ‘Making Informed Choices’ is being completed this term and for the last topic for discussion, classes have been looking at various social justice issues including reconciliation and intervention, charities, poverty and homelessness. Students have also been asked to investigate current issues such as refugees and live cattle exports to Indonesia. This term has also seen the introduction of a previously popular skill: knitting. On Friday afternoons you can hear the click‐click of needles in the senior classes. Thank you to the many parents and grandparents who are helping. It is won‐derful to see so many students, both girls and boys, satisfied with their accomplishments. We hope to sew the squares together and send the rugs to a local charity. The students may even start a new craze!

BREAD MAKING  In science, the Year 5's have been learning about micro‐organisms. On Thursday 16 June we made bread. The aim was to see if bread without yeast was much different to bread with yeast. We used bread making machines to make the bread. Our investigation proved that bread with no yeast is smaller and harder than normal bread with yeast. The result was, the one with yeast grew, expanded, made air pockets and appeared to be a lot lighter than the one without yeast. We didn't think it was a fair test because one of them was mixed manually because one of the bread mixers was broken and the other one was mixed by a machine (the one with yeast was mixed manually).

OUR STUDENT LED VIDEO CONFERENCE On Tuesday 21 June we had a student led video conference. We controlled the other schools’ smartboards. There were schools called Valley View, Gosford and Belmont and they watched us. We all had scripts. I was first to talk. I welcomed the schools. Benjamin was controlling the smartboard while we all talked. He was good at controlling the smartboard. He is the ‘technology man’. By Angad  On Tuesday 2C had their first ever student led video conference. I was so nervous and excited all at the same time. I was the second speaker. I was after Angad. I talked about our wishing chair. When I sat down, I felt so proud of myself and I had a very nervous smile. The good thing about the video conference was that none of the schools left before we had finished. It was a great video conference.   By Aleeya 

 I loved the video conference that we presented. When I spoke, I had the most questions to ask the other schools. There were four schools listening to our video conference. The video conference was about our schoolyard safari, different types of trees, seed and Barry and Barbara. All the schools that were watching us doing our video conference were so inter‐ested that they couldn’t stop watching! Saskia was talking about Barry the brush turkey and Luke led the singing off the Take‐Two song.  At the end all the schools sang the Take‐Two song again.  By Anousheh

P & C NEWS  We hope you are all busy dragging out your favourite family recipes for the Bush School Cookbook.  We need lots of contributions to get the Cookbook off the ground, so get the kids involved over the holidays and submit your recipes and pictures to Kerry Silver as soon as possible.   Thanks to all of the parents who came to our Fair meeting last Thursday – what a great turn out.  We are currently finalising application forms for the Fair but if anyone is interested in taking a stall on the day, please email the P & C and we will forward all of the necessary information.   Our Tombola mufti day is on Tuesday 26  July 2011.  The Tombola stall at the Fair will be great fun, with everyone walking away with a prize.  A few easy ideas for Tombola items are: Lego, stationery, games, DVD’s, wine etc.  Mem‐bers of the P & C will be at school on the day to collect your prizes – we would not expect the children to carry in bot‐tles of wine without adult help!   Our fantastic new Library will be opening next Tuesday.  I look forward to seeing many of you there.   DIARY DATES  Tuesday 26 July    Tombola Mufti Day Saturday August 27  Bush School Fair

Student Banking will be on MONDAY and TUESDAY for Term 2 only   There is only one week left to do your banking for this term so please remember your deposit books 

 As previously explained, the backpack reward will no longer be available after the end of Term 2 ‐ Friday, 1 July 2011.  Therefore, those students who would like to redeem their tokens for a backpack must have 30 tokens and completed 30 deposits with the Commonwealth Bank through Student Banking.  The Bank has suggested that we hold an extra banking day each week until the end of term to help students achieve their 30 deposits for backpack.  Monday is our additional banking day at the school for Term 2 only.  Students will need to place their deposit books in the class grey pouch and bring it to the Staff Room on Monday at 9:15am.  You will need to fill out two deposit slips and have the correct money for each day.  I will deposit one on Monday and keep the deposit wallets at school for Tuesday and then deposit the second slip on Tuesday morning.  The students will then receive their deposit wallets on the Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday as normal.  I have been informed by the bank that there is a delay with the receipt of backpacks.  Therefore, we may need to pre‐sent them to the students at the beginning of Term 3 rather than this term.  I apologise to the students who I know are very excited to receive their backpacks.  If there are any queries please contact me via e‐mail.

Winter Holiday Workshops 10 – 2.30pm At the new Wallarobba Centre, Willow Park, 25 Edgeworth David Ave, Hornsby (parking available on site, just turn into driveway that runs off Edgeworth David Drive beside Willow Park) It is a 5 min walk from Hornsby Westfield or Waitara Station. More parking available on Sherbrook Road. Fee: $45 a day or $35 day rate if booking 2 or more sessions. Bring lunch and morning tea. All craft materials supplied. Tues 5th July: Papercraft Have fun with paper! We will be making cards, mini stationery sets and paper collage art. Cutting, gluing, pasting and some stamping and stencilling will be the order of the day! Wed 6th July: Tile Mosaics & Glass Painting Make your very own pot stand for home using tiles and mosaics. Try glass painting making cute little tea lights that will make lovely gifts for friends! Tues 12th July: All Things Timber Bits and pieces of timber will be decorated and transformed into wonderful fridge magnets, timber ornaments and personalized timber photo frames. Time permitting we may even manage some colourful timber beads sets to wear home! Wed 13th July: Simple Sewing The fabrics will be out in force, ready to whipped up with simple sewing and gluing techniques into little hangers, brooches and divine small animals. One for the girls!
