*WORSHIP NEWS*

Sunday Morning Schedule 9:30 a.m. Worship/Communion 11:00 a.m. Education Hour

Ash Wednesday is March 1 - our service is at 7:00 PM. This is a service of confession, the imposition of ashes as a sign of penitence, and solemn Holy Communion, which begins the 40-day period of preparation for Good Friday and Easter.

On the five Wednesday evenings of Lent (beginning March 8) we will gather for a simple service of the Word and prayer at 7:00 PM. Each service will also feature a lesson on Martin Luther's call for a link between economic justice and faith. This study lifts up themes related to both the ELCA World Hunger Appeal and the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation.

Scripture Lessons for March Wednesday Mar 1 – Ash Wednesday Joel 2:1-2, 12-17 or Isaiah 58:1-12 Psalm 51:1-17 (1) 2 Corinthians 5:20b—6:10 Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21 Color: Purple Sunday Mar 5 – First Sunday in Lent Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7 Psalm 32 (10) Romans 5:12-19 Matthew 4:1-11 Color: Purple Sunday Mar 12 – Second Sunday in Lent Genesis 12:1-4a

*FROM OUR LEADERSHIP* From the Pastor

Ash Wednesday this year is, by chance, also the first day of Meteorological Spring. It begins the 40-day period before Easter, whose name originally derived from “lencten” to mark the lengthening of the days during Springtime.

In this unusual year, when the past two mild months have fooled so many budding shrubs and trees into thinking Spring might already be here, it’s helpful to remember that bleak darkness can sometimes lurk just around the corner.

When we begin this “penitential” season with the mark of ashes and the reminder that we are dust (and to dust we shall return), it is a way of centering our minds on our dependence on God. Although we should daily repent, daily die to sin and rise to new life, this is a time of year to remind ourselves that we are wholly dependent on God’s grace .

This year we are again commemorating Lent with a concentration on Food Insecurity. I invite you to make a sacrificial gift during this season to the ELCA World Hunger appeal. As the daily devotional book (available to you at church) puts it, “Formed in relationship, confident in God’s abundance and promise and supported by your generosity, ELCA World Hunger creatively and courageously works toward a just world where all are fed.”

The daily devotional theme, and our teaching time each Wednesday at 7:00, is also built on Martin Luther’s teachings on economic justice. As an ELCA social statement puts it, “Economic life is intended to be a means through which God’s purposes for humankind and creation are to be served.”

In our age, many crises are looming. As a comprehensive report in the Guardian put it, “All of the studies suggest the worst impacts will be felt by the poorest people.” As one expert put it, "Climate change is already having a domino effect on food and nutritional security for the world's poorest and most vulnerable people. Child malnutrition is predicted to increase by 20% by 2050. Climate change impacts will disproportionately fall on people living in tropical regions, and particularly on the most vulnerable and marginalized population groups. This is the injustice of climate change – the worst of the impacts are felt by those who contributed least to causing the problem."

Page 16: The Bridge - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/christthelordlutheranchurch...Sat May 6 8:00am Bound & Ungagged - Colonial Cafe & Ice Cream, 600 South McLean Boulevard, Elgin, IL

Page 16

But from Europe to the US to Asia, no population will remain insulated from the huge changes in food production that the rest of the century will bring. May part of our Lenten observance this year be a renewed focus on better use of our resources to protect the poor.

The Rev. Dr Michael R. Rothaar Interim Pastor

Update on Getting a New Pastor The Ministry Site Profile (approved by our council in

January) has now been approved for posting by our synod bishop, Rev. Wayne Miller. Our Ministry Site Profile is now available throughout the ELCA, and is available to all pastors seeking a call at www.elca.org/Call-Process/Current-Openings. Copies of the Ministry Site Profile are available on the table in front of the church office, if you are interested. This means that our Call Committee may now receive "Rostered Leader Profiles" from our synod staff.

*GET INVOLVED*

Fellowship Event March 4th 15 tickets (more if needed) have been reserved for "Pippin", at Crystal Lake South High School on Sat., Mar. 4 at 1:00. Our own Ben Stoner is the director. Pippin won a Tony Award in 2013 for best Musical Revival. See the signup; tickets are only $10, with payment due to the Tolzmanns by February 19.

Our AIM is Opening Doors to the Future (Capital Appeal)

At the end of January we heard our Music Director, Jason P, explain how difficult it is to enter our building in a wheelchair. At worship we have seen photos of Jamie struggling to get him through the doors. He also stressed the importance of having more secure doors for those in the building and for our property. Then three weeks later we heard Eric L use a Fire/CO detector to put across, creatively, our need to address building issues identified by our Council.

Our AIM goal is to raise at least $45,000 in three years to buy new doors with power assist, repair the roof & clerestory windows, and replace the well pump and tank. In April, we will be asked to make a commitment to this appeal for a total sum over the three years, which can be given weekly, monthly, once a year or whatever works best. Then on Mother’s Day, May 14th, will be a Great Sunday of Giving. We hope to raise $5,000-$10,000 on that Sunday to kickstart our appeal. If we expect a Tax Refund, consider giving a generous part of it to this appeal on the 14th.

We have a fantastic welcome statement. To make us even more welcoming we need to replace the entrance doors, which are a current barrier to some persons. Our facility will be completely handicap accessible, thanks to your positive response to this appeal.

Needles and Pins Circle – Remember when your mom had “Circle” at church or the

neighborhood ladies got together to “Coffee Klatch”. I do, and I remember my Mom forming the best bonds of friendship with those ladies. They were like sisters to her and second Moms to us. Well, CTL has that group. We meet on Tuesdays from 9 -12 and we sew, knit, crochet, make cards, visit and just kibitz. Sometimes someone even brings a special treat or new recipe that we all have to sample. You are all welcome to join us. Even if you don’t do any of these crafty things we would love to have you there just to visit. Or come and LEARN how to do something new.

If we are having lots of fun (which is often) we bring a sack lunch and just keep going into the afternoon. What a great way to spend a Tuesday Morning.

Shop at Smile.Amazon.com CTL earns 0.5% of your purchase! On your first visit to

AmazonSmile, you need to select a charitable organization to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. They will remember your selection, and then every eligible purchase you make on Amazon will result in an automatic donation! A simple way to support CTL!

Bound and Ungagged Bound and Ungagged is reading "The Underground

Railroad" by Colson Whitehead for Sat. Mar. 4. For April 1st we will be reading "The Invention of Wings" by Sue Monk Kidd and for May 6th we will be reading "My Name is Lucy Barton" by Elizabeth Strout. We usually meet the first Saturday of each month at Colonial Cafe' on McLean Blvd at 8:00 am. If you love to read, come join us for a delicious breakfast, some wonderful fellowship, and lively discussion about the books that we read. We are usually finished by 9:30-10:00 am. If you have any questions or would like to suggest a book that you have read and think the book club would enjoy reading and discussing it, please contact Carol H.

Mitten tree this month! A bag full of hats, mittens, slippers, and scarves for people of all ages went to Food for Greater Elgin to be distributed to families who go there for groceries. A bag filled with men’s hats, ear muffs, and jeans went to help the guests at the Vineyard breakfast. A baby hat went to Sherman. Thanks for helping those in need of warm clothing. The Mitten Tree ministry will end early in March.

Easter Food Baskets: Social Ministry will again be coordinating a food drive for those in need in the U-46 area. We will be looking for donations to fill fifteen "baskets". The amount of food will provide a family with several days worth of meals. Sign-up for donations will begin on Sun., Mar. 12 and the food will need to be at CTL on or before Sun., Apr. 2. The baskets will be assembled during the week and delivered on the following Sunday.

Love Elgin Day: Love Elgin Day is scheduled for April 29th. On this day, the churches in Elgin are providing prayers and free food, clothing, and services for those who are in need of it. For this event, Social Ministry will be collecting used clothing suitable for Spring and Summer wear. The clothing can be for all ages but should be clean and in good condition. Bring your

donations to CTL and place them in the labeled box in the Narthex or bring your clothing in a bag and place it near the box. All donations will be delivered on Sun., Apr. 23. This is a good time to clean out your closet!

Kids Hope USA Six dedicated CTL members spend one hour, one day a

week, each with just one child at Hillcrest. Each one of the mentors knows the importance of the quality time spent with these at risk children. One little boy has only been meeting with his mentor for a short time but his teacher has already seen a drastic change in him. He's responding when he hears his name and is more focused on the activities. That may not seem like much, but, for this child, it's HUGE!

The little girl I work with asks me at the end of each year, "What happens next year?" I respond, "If you're at this school, I'll be here, too." The look on her face is priceless. She's in third grade this year so we still have three years together. Some of the KH kids will be moving on to middle school next fall. There's a possibility that their mentors can go with them to help them

transition well. What a great opportunity! However, if three mentors move on to middle school, CTL will have only three mentors at Hillcrest. We desperately need more mentors! Training and support are part of the program. Ask the mentors about their experiences if you have any questions. There are so many children who would love to have you as the special adult who spends just one hour a week with them. Mentors are: Tom J, Henrietta N, Ann K, Patty H, Jacki B and Jeanne T.

Pray for Kids Hope USA, the mentors from CTL, our special children and their families.

Prayerful Humor The Army of the Lord

A friend was in front of me coming out of church one day, and the preacher was standing at the door, as he always is, to shake hands. He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside. The Pastor said to him, "You need to join the Army of the Lord!"

My friend replied, "I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor." Pastor questioned, "How come I don't see you except at Christmas and Easter?"

He whispered back, "I'm in the secret service."

Jason P, Music Director Martin Luther King Food Drive

Here is an update concerning the Martin Luther King, Jr. food drive, for which CTL partnered with the City of Elgin. Donations were enough to provide each of eight local food pantries with an average of 1,500 pounds of canned goods, toiletries and household items. Joe Wars, who chaired the food drive, says, "It was a giant success. Many thanks for your wonderful support." He says the food drive will be held again in January of 2018.
