This fall we are exploring together what it
means to be “all in” with Jesus and our
community of faith. We’re asking the
question, “what’s really important?” and
the follow up question, “am I living in a
way that reflects that?”
One thing that helps us understand what’s
really important as individuals is knowing
what’s important to us as a community of
faith. Earlier this year, our Administrative
Board and staff spent time discerning and
clarifying an answer to that question. We
asked how God has gifted us, and who we
are becoming as we let him shape us as a
church. Our Administrative Board and our
staff had this discussion separately, and
then compared results – they were essen-
tially identical! Then we pulled out our old
Core Values from 2014 and found that,
though longer, it was very consistent with
the new list. Here’s what we discerned:
BPUMC is a community of:
Deep Commitment – We give our lives to
Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit in our
community of faith.
“We cared so deeply that we were delight-
ed to share with you not only the gospel of
God, but our lives as well. That is how be-
loved you have become to us.” (1 Thess.
2:8)
Multiplying Faith – We pour ourselves into
helping others grow to spiritual maturity,
especially young people.
“Therefore go and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey eve-
rything I have commanded you. And
surely I am with you always.” (Matt.
28:19-20)
Sacrificial Living – We are motivated to
use our best gifts and resources for God
and others.
“Yes, everything else is worthless when
compared with the infinite value of
knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” (Phil.
3:8a)
Spiritual Depth – We ground our lives in
Scripture, prayer, and worship.
“All the believers devoted themselves to
the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship,
and to sharing in meals (including the
Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.” (Acts
2:42)
The Fruit of the Spirit - We show God’s
presence in our lives by being even-
tempered, kind, joyful, and loving.
“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in
step with the Spirit.” (Gal. 3:25)
What a good work God is doing in us, as
he slowly molds and shapes us into his
image. That work doesn’t happen in us
as individuals; it happens in community.
We are so grateful for this community of
BPUMC, and we hope you are too. God
has given us a great gift – let’s go ALL IN
with Jesus and BPUMC!
Joyfully Yours,
Kristen & Bill

OCTOBER CALENDAR
Joe Wickes
Director of Contemporary Worship
Co-Director of Discipleship/Outreach
Worshipping together during this last month(ish) has been awesome. It’s refreshing to be part of a con-
gregation that clearly values authentic worship over just a good live music performance (though hope-
fully, we accomplish both)! As we continue to move forward, the goal is that we would continue to em-
brace that authenticity. In order to reach that goal, I am working to slowly introduce some new songs
(and mess with some others) to make sure that how we are praising is both meaningful and theological-
ly accurate.
When I was in youth group, we would sporadically take spiritual retreats to try and re-focus on our rela-
tionship with God and what was important. During a smaller one of these retreats, I had the opportuni-
ty to lead a sort of impromptu worship set. After the set, one of my leaders came up and told me how
much she loved songs that spoke directly to God. After that talk, I realized that I hadn’t ever really
thought about what the words in worship songs actually said. I had just heard them on Christian radio
or during our Sunday morning worship and added them to our repertoire. Her words highlighted (and
continue to remind me) to be intentional in selecting the songs that we sing together. I often find so
much more meaning and excitement when I focus on what I am saying when I am worshipping, and I
would encourage you to do the same thing!
For a while, I have been struck with the truth of Jesus as King. Sometimes as the church, I have felt like
we talk a lot about the cross, but not a lot about the resurrection. Jesus’ work on the cross can’t be
downplayed, but we literally would not have a faith without him being alive. Now, this is where I would
usually glaze over; but let’s just think about that for a second… Jesus was dead… but now He’s not. Per-
sonally, I don’t know anyone else in my life that can make that claim. Jesus is no longer in the grave,
and that changes everything for us. In Him, we are freed from our own spirutual death. As his followers,
we worship God incarnate, Jesus the Christ. We worship a living God that knows exactly what it’s like to
struggle with the same things we do. We worship the risen Christ who is Lord and conquerer even of
death. For me, remembering that changes the whole worship experience. We are not worshipping an
abstract, unknowable God. We are worshipping the one true God, who still gives himself to us via the
Holy Spirit. That’s pretty cool. Thinking of Jesus as King changes everything for me, and I hope it helps
you too. I’m looking forward to worshipping Him together each week! !
WORSHIPPING A LIVING GOD
4
We had a great kickoff of our Sunday and Midweek Groups over the past few weeks. We are excited
for the Groups that have continued to remain steady (such as Groups led by Connie Tenpas, Dewey
Carlson, Jan Stowell, and so many others!). We have been thrilled by the turn out of some of our
newly offered Groups, such as the parenting class, marriage class, and Financial Peace class. We
would love to see more of an incline in those who don't normally attend a Sunday or Midweek Group
to start joining. So if you haven't joined a Group yet, or know someone who hasn't but should, most
Groups are open to join whenever, so please jump in or invite someone along!
Our prayers with the new service times and the Sunday Groups for all ages is that we will be able to
see a deeper community formed within our church. We would like to continue offering classes on
important and modern topics such as parenting, marriage, and money. In the next season of Groups
that will launch in January we are hoping to introduce more classes on more specific ages for par-
enting, an overview of the Bible, and topical studies on modern issues (Such as a book study called
Counter Culture by David Platt where he shows Christians how to actively take a stand on such issues
as poverty, sex trafficking, marriage, abortion, racism, and religious liberty—and challenges us to be-
come passionate, unwavering voices for Christ).
It is our prayer that these Groups and the communities that are formed within them will lead to
greater spiritual growth both with our relationship with our Lord and also in our relationships within
our church body. We hope to see young families who join us for the worship service on Sunday
mornings to stick around for Sunday Groups so that they too can experience these deep community
relationships.
If you have any questions on what Groups are being offered, or would like to get more involved,
please don't hesitate to reach out. Both Joe and I would love to chat with you about this!
See you this Sunday!

USING THE GIFTS GOD
GAVE US
"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve each oth-
er, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." 1 Peter 4:10
I'm excited to have the opportunity to take on this additional role as Volun-
teer Coordinator. I have a lot of passion to help others discover the gifts God
has placed within them to serve the body of Christ. I understand that serving
is an important part of our faith walk and I hope to encourage more people to get plugged in.
Many of you serve in so many ways at BPUMC and we are so grateful for each one of you. Every
way of volunteering is important and so valued. Communication is a high priority so... How are
you feeling as a volunteer at BPUMC? Are you feeling like you are serving in the ways God has
gifted you? If you are not serving, are you ready to take the next step?
Please feel free to find me on Sunday mornings, call the church or email me at
[email protected] and keep our awesome volunteers in your prayers. We truly are grate-
ful for each one of you. We couldn't do it without you!!
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: We are in need of volunteers in our Children's ministry for Sunday
school or special events and drivers with a CDL and able to drive the church bus on an occasional
Sunday morning.
With the school year now in full swing, so is 5&2 Ministry! This school year, we are serving bags
of food in backpacks to kids in Bemus Point, Clymer, and Sherman schools, the GA in Jamestown,
and the UPK Class at Ring Elementary in Jamestown. Additionally, we provide after school snacks
for children at the Clymer/French Creek and Prendergast Libraries. This roughly equates to 14,000
bags of food and 7,600 snack/juice breaks in Chautauqua County! It's time to fill the food bins at
church, email [email protected] to volunteer or donations may be sent to 5&2 Ministry,
PO Box 152, Clymer, NY 14724. Menus for food bags may be found online at 5and2ministry.com.
Thank you for your faithful and continued support!
