The Boulevard ProjectWhy is it happening?Oystermouth Road, Victoria Road and Quay Parade currently act as a barrier betweenthe city centre and the waterfront.

Links between city centre shops and the Maritime Quarter, SA1 and the promenade arebeing improved to encourage more and more people to cycle and walk between them.

Improving the look of the route will also create a better impression of Swansea forresidents, commuters and visitors to our city. This should benefit local businessesand attract more investment.

Businesses and residents will be kept updated throughout the Boulevard scheme bySwansea Council’s Twitter and Facebook feeds, local newspapers, local radio stationsand a designated website at www.swanseacitycentre.com/boulevard

There will also be targeted mail-drops and information panels along the route.

The Boulevard ProjectWhat are the benefits of the project?The main road between the River Bridges and Princess Way will be significantlyenhanced. Environmental improvements introduced along the route will include:

better quality and wider pavements for pedestrians better facilities for cyclists high-quality crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists at key locations (similar to theexample in the image above)

regular tree-planting seats, benches, bins and public art

Traffic light technology along the route will also be improved to ensure there’s no negative impacton traffic flows. Traffic lights will be better phased to improve their efficiency. Work has alreadytaken place to limit the number of places where vehicles can join and leave the main road toreduce impact on traffic flows.

The Boulevard ProjectWhen is it happening?The Boulevard project follows extensive consultation and will be split into two phases:

* Phase 1 – from The Strand to Princess Way. This phase is scheduled to run from lateFebruary 2013 to November 2013.

* Phase 2 – from the River Tawe bridges to The Strand. This phase is scheduled to run fromFebruary 2014 to November 2014.

How much disruption will there be?Everything possible will be done to minimise disruption for motorists during the works.Off-peak working and night-time working will take place wherever possible. Narrow laneswill be introduced to maintain traffic flows.

Notification of any significant disruptive works will be given in advance.

The Boulevard ProjectWhat’s the Boulevard scheme a part of?The scheme is one of a number of projects being funded by the Welsh Government, the WalesEuropean Funding Office and Swansea Council to improve the Swansea City Centre experiencefor residents, businesses and visitors to the City.

Money for the scheme is ring-fenced, which means it can only be spent on this project.

Some of the projects already completed as part of the overall scheme include:

City Centre retail area improvements, including the Lower Oxford Street area The upgrade of the promenade between the Observatory and the Civic Centre, and thewalkway east of the River Tawe close to Sainsbury’s

Environmental enhancements and traffic flow improvements at the River Tawe bridges An enhanced pedestrian crossing facility at Oystermouth Road’s junction with West Way
