EDITOR’S NOTEQuarter One, 2018/2019 signifies the beginning of a new era for Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC). It is the beginning of a new strategy that will shift the organisation in a direction that will ensure the achievement of its mandate. BITC has made a lot of progress over the years and the articles in this edition carry evidence of such. BITC hosted a Finnish delegation, their mission was aimed at engaging local businesses that can set up businesses in Finland and Sweden.
BITC also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Botswana. This MoU marked the beginning of an agreement between the two entities that enable learning, training and growth for private businesses in the export sector. BITC also led companies to the 2018 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) and the Business Botswana Northern Trade Fair. Leading companies to exhibitions is an indication that the organisation is committed to ensuring that Botswana products find a market in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and internationally. Participation in these exhibitions has grown from exhibiting only but to signing agreements with their counterparts such as the Zimbabwe Investment Authority (ZIA).
Once again, the BITC Quarterly Newsletter is proving to be a platform that promotes companies it assists. In this issue, the National Agro Processing (NAPro) is our point of focus. The Selebi Phikwe based company is the only one of its kind in Botswana. Botswana also participated in the Annual Investment Meeting in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This was the biggest annual platform that was aimed at creating ways of increasing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) revenue for countries that attended. BITC is pleased to profile the BITC Acting Chief Operations Officer, Reginald Selelo. Read about him, under the “Profiling Our Leaders” section.
Take the time to read the Newsletter and learn about BITC’s contribution towards economic development and sustainability. Enjoy this Issue and give us feedback on our website at bitc.co.bw or www.gobotswana.com and on our various social media platforms!

Botswana is looking to build bilateral ties with the Republic of Finland. The country made an ambitious push to promote trade between the two countries by hosting a Business Forum at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) on April 17, 2018. This Forum was organized and managed by Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) in collaboration with Finnpartnership and the Embassy of Finland in Pretoria, Republic of South Africa. The event was graced by the Ambassador of Finland to South Africa, His Excellency, Kari Alanko and the BITC Acting Chief Executive, Keletsositse Olebile.
The focus of this engagement was to foster opportunities
for Joint Venture Partnerships (JVP) between Botswana
and Finland based companies. The Forum had presentations
by Finland companies interested in doing business with
Botswana as well as Botswana companies interested in
doing business in Sweden and Finland. Organisations such
as the Botswana Innovation Hub and Business Botswana
made presentations as an effort to entice Finland companies
into investing in Botswana. This opportunity enabled the
exchange of ideas and one on one Business to Business
interactions for companies that were in attendance. The
sectors of focus at the Forum were Agribusiness, Financial
and Business Services, Information Communication
Technology (ICT), Beef, Green Energy or Clean Technology,
Manufacturing and Tourism.
As a result of this Forum, a few local companies are in
discussions with Finnpartnership to facilitate access to
the FinnFund and FinnGrant which are both accessible in
Botswana. The companies vary in the sectors operation,
ranging from Agribusiness, Healthcare Services, Financial
Services, Manufacturing and Tourism. Through the FinnFund,
local companies will have access to financial instruments
ranging from equity, to loans and mezzanine financing which
includes unsecured financial loans.

Alongside the 2018 ZITF, BITC also signed a Memorandum
of Understanding (MoU) with the Zimbabwe Investment
Authority (ZIA) on April 27, 2018. The signing was done in the
presence of the Botswana Ambassador to Zimbabwe His
Excellency, Lt. General Louis Matshwenyego Fisher and the
Zimbabwe Honourable Minister of Industry and Commerce,
Mike Bimha.
BITC then hosted three local companies at the 2018 Business
Botswana Northern Trade Fair in Francistown from May 23 to
the 27, 2018. The fair themed, “Is tourism Botswana’s hope amidst dwindling mining fortunes,” was aimed at attracting
businesses to the Francistown region and providing a
platform for companies that do not have a presence in that
area an avenue that will allow them to reach clientele for
that week.
The Fair attracted businesses from the private, public and
quasi – government sectors. This year, Brand Botswana
hosted three companies with the primary focus of selling
BITC services and creating awareness on Brand Botswana
and the use of the Pride Mark. The three companies under the
BITC / Brand Botswana Pavilion were Ina Lebe which is based
in Pilane, Kings Leather Works which is based in Letlhakane
and Najubo which is based in Selebi Phikwe. The companies
hosted trade in leather, embroidery or embossing and food
packaging and their role during the Fair was to drive the Brand
Botswana message and give testimonial to the assistance
received.
The last exhibition for the quarter which was attended by
BITC was the 3rd Youth Business Expo 2018 from May 28, 2018
to June 3, 2018 at Fairgrounds Holdings in Gaborone. The
event theme for this year was “YB Expo, where young people strive for success”. The exposition was aimed at promoting
youth entrepreneurship through exhibition of products,
services and creating mutually beneficial partnerships. BITC
participated through the Business Clinic, which was One Stop
Service for aspiring entrepreneurs, startup businesses as
well as existing businesses.
BITC invited the businesses to tap into the existing
opportunities to promote their products/services,
investment opportunities as well as facilitation services that
will assist their businesses to grow. The Centre also informed
the Businesses about packaging their products and services
to be export ready.
The Expo was an opportunity for Brand Botswana to identify
companies that were not accredited under the Pride Mark
as well as educating them on the benefits of using the
Pride Mark. Speaking at the official opening, the Minister of
Youth Empowerment, Sports and Culture Development,
Honorable Thapelo Olopeng presented to the Business
Community about the Botswana One Stop Shop Service
Centre and encouraged them to take advantage of BOSSC
services.
BITC TAKES COMPANIES TO INTERNATIONAL AND LOCAL EXHIBITIONS
In our efforts to promote Botswana’s exports, Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) led companies to the 2018 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) in Bulawayo, the 2018 Business Botswana Northern Trade Fair in Francistown and the 2018 Youth Expo in Gaborone. BITC’s mandate includes promoting Botswana in both the local and international markets and a part of this entails participation at expos, sometimes as the entity alone and sometimes leading companies to exhibit and promote locally manufactured products.
Mid 2018 saw our participation at these three key expositions.
At the 2018 ZITF, BITC hosted 13 companies in neighbouring
Zimbabwe from April 24 to the 28, 2018. This promotional
mission allowed local companies to showcase their products
and services, as well as explore business opportunities in
the Zimbabwean market. The companies also participated
in match-making meetings for their products with pre-
identified partners, suppliers, distributors and agents. ZITF
has proved to be one of the biggest trade fairs in southern
Africa and has attracted over 650 companies from 15
different countries, across different sectors.

BITC AND THE UNIVERSITY OF BOTSWANA SIGN A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING
BITC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Botswana at UB on May 8, 2018. This MoU is aimed at developing institutional ties between the two entities and promote interactions in mutually beneficial areas of Training, Consulting and Education in the fields of International Business, Marketing and Business Development.
Speaking at the ceremony the Acting Chief Executive,
Keletsositse Olebile stated that this MoU is BITC’s flagship
project which is instrumental in the capacity building
initiative called Botswana Exporter Development
Programme (BEDP) which will be delivered through the UB
in June 2018. The Programme is aimed at enhancing the
export competitiveness of Botswana goods and services at
different levels. Mr. Olebile said the key deliverables of the
MoU will promote vacation attachments / placements for
International Business students to gain practical exposure in
branding and marketing.
For his part, the University Vice Chancellor Professor David
Norris said the MoU formalizes the cooperation between UB
and BITC and it comes at a time when the University is making
great strides in boosting engagements with the various
industries for mutual benefit. He further said, the MoU is an
academic dream as it becomes the beginning of a substantial
cooperation between the two institutions.
He reiterated that the purpose of the BEDP is to develop a
pool of appropriately skilled exporters, and ensure that
the real value of exports in the Botswana economy is
consistently growing over time. The programme will cover
export awareness, export planning and mentoring. He
emphasized that the University is equipped and capable
to deliver industry related trainings such as the BEDP. He

BITC LEGACY LIVES ON THROUGH PARASTATAL GAMES
The 2018 All MITI Parastatal Games marked the 5th year since the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Parastatal Games were conceptualised by Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC). The Games were held in Selebi Phikwe on June 2, 2018 by the Selebi Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit (SPEDU).
BITC initiated and hosted the maiden All MITI Parastatal
Games in 2014 upon the realisation that the Ministry of
Investment, Trade and Industry parastatals needed a
social and sporting platform to build relationship that
complements the existing working relationship that the
parastatals employees have with each other. This sporting
activity has come a long way and grew tremendously to
become the highlight of the annual calendars of parastatals
reporting to MITI.
These Games are bearing fruit and the continued interest
by parastatals is testimony to the commitment to
build mutually beneficial relations among participating
parastatals. This noble initiative has built a spirit of a
formidable force of sisterhood among employees. After the
inaugural tournament at the Bank of Botswana Grounds in
2014, the 2015 Games were hosted by the Local Enterprise
Authority (LEA), the Copyright Society of Botswana
(COSBOTS) in 2016, the Competition Authority (CA) and Selebi
Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit (SPEDU) hosting in
2017 and 2018 respectively.
This fun-filled sporting event saw the initial participation by
Botswana Development Corporation (BDC), Local Enterprise
Authority (LEA), Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS),
Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA) and
Competition Authority (CA). The new comers, Companies
and Intellectual Properties Authority (CIPA), Copyright
Society of Botswana (COSBOTS), Selebi Phikwe Economic
Diversification Unit (SPEDU) and Gambling Authority joining
in the subsequent years. The year 2018 accentuated this
tremendous growth with Special Economic Zones Authority
(SEZA) and Botswana Trade Commission (BOTC) joining in
despite the few number of their employees.
The tournament will continue to provide a platform for
employees to network with their counterparts in other
organisations and encourage employee motivation. The
hosts for 2019, 2020 and 2021 were determined through a
toss in Selebi Phikwe. The parastatals that will be hosting
in those years are the Botswana Development Corporation
(BDC), Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) and the
Botswana Trade Commission (BOTC) respective.

BITC DONATES TO ARTESIA SCHOOL AND INSPIRES IKAGENG STUDENTS
Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) donated toiletries to students at Artersia Junior Secondary School in the Kgatleng District as part of the organisation’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) program on May 31, 2018. These donations were made by the charitable BITC employees and handed over to the School Principal – Mr. Motlhanka who expressed his gratitude for the generosity and kindness.
During the handover, Mr. Motlhanka informed the BITC team
that their school has been excelling in sporting activities
and have had numerous challenges in the academic area. He
also informed them that currently they are only assisted by
the Botswana government under the parent Ministry. His
appeal was for long-term assistance in the form of Adopt –
A – School. The BITC team was represented by the Manager,
Customer Relations, Lebogang Mpete, the Manager, Brand
Botswana International, Thuso Palai and the Receptionist –
Pelonomi Judge.
On another charitable journey with the learners, BITC
also engaged students from Ikageng Junior Secondary
School on June 15, 2018. This initiative was undertaken
as a way of commemorating the Day of the African Child
commonly known as June 16. The importance of hosting
Ikageng students was to Inspire – A – Child. This day
commenced with a Motivational Talk by the Director, Brand
Botswana International – Gaorekwe Gaorekwe who gave an
inspirational talk about the challenges that he faced on his
journey to success and how he overcame them. He also talked
about fear and how it can cripple one and be an impediment
of success. The seven students from Ikageng were then
attached to the different departments in BITC where they
gained first-hand knowledge on the organisation’s services
and work environment.
This inspiring day was concluded with another talk from
the BITC Acting Chief Operations Officer – Reginald Selelo
who showed his appreciation to the BITC team for organising
such an event and asked the students to constantly press on
and aspire to live a life of success. Each student was afforded
an opportunity to state how beneficial the day was and
what their take home was. For the students, the inspiration
they got from the engagement was that in life, anything is
possible, just as long as you focus and let fear be a driving
force instead of a hinderance.

RAW MATERIALS
NAPro values horticultural farmers as the driving engine
of its operations as their output brings life to the plant and

excess produce by farmers and providing a market for lower
quality grade produce, NAPro has developed a product
specification data sheet which is used to guide farmers on
the plant requirements.
Raw material quality assessments
NAPro procures and processes excellent quality produce
which is good for human consumption. The vegetables are
procured when they are fully mature to give the best flavor
and color when processing. However, NAPro will not accept
any decayed or rotten vegetables. The first inspection of raw
materials at NAPro includes checks on:
• Maturity(over-ripeorunder-ripe),
• Color,
• Sizeorshape(forsomeproducts),

Farmers who supply NAPro are encouraged to remove
moldy, rotten, and badly damaged raw materials along
with all visible foreign material (physical contaminants),
such as leaves, stems, stalks, sticks, stones and rocks. After
inspection vegetables are washed thoroughly in clean water.
The company has a good team of personnel who are trained
to put strict measures as per their checklist to make sure
