The pulp world of the 1930s is in danger! The dread Chinesesorcerer and mastermind Gao Fang is on the verge of obtaining god-like mystical power, the Ruby Eyes of the Lo-Man Tiger. Only aragtag group of heroes stands between the safety of humanity andGao Fang’s control over the laws of time and space. But do they havewhat it takes to traverse through the bowels of San Francisco’sChinatown and into the very heart of the villain’s lair? Can they stopa Chinese mastermind from holding nigh unlimited power?

This serial is not for the faint of heart.

Synopsis:The Bones of Chinatown begins on a dark and stormy night

with the heroes on the observation deck of the Empire StateBuilding. Unfortunately, they find their employer, Dr. Bai Li,unconscious on the ground. Suddenly, ninjas attack! Once the doctorrecovers, he pleads for the heroes to reach San Francisco and stopGao Fang from obtaining both mystical Ruby Eyes of the Lo-ManTiger.

Once the heroes reach San Francisco they meet Egg Fu Chow, aneccentric Chinese restauranteur with a fondness for sorcery. Egg FuChow fills the heroes in on Gao Fang’s most visible operation, GoldenTriangle Exports, a supposedly legitimate shipping business. It isrumored that one of the Ruby Eyes is kept there.

The heroes travel through the dank sewers and twistingpassages, fending off a pack of hopping vampires. Time quicklyturns against them when a tentacled monstrosity bursts from a poolof stagnant water. Eventually the heroes reach Gao Fang’s vault. Theheroes don’t even have time to catch their breath, when a Chinesedemon statue attacks!

After snatching the Ruby Eye, it becomes a desperate racethrough the Golden Triangle Exports building as the heroes beat feettowards the exit, the possessed demon statue right on their heels.Once the heroes reach the Chinatown streets, the situation quicklydevolves into an all-out war between the Tam Hin Cho tong, con-trolled by Gao Fang and the Golden Triangle, and Egg Fu Chow’sforce of freedom fighters. Once the smoke clears (literally – the TamHin Cho thugs use smoke pellets to confuse their enemies!) theheroes find themselves standing triumphant on the field of battle.

Adventure waits for no one in this thrilling tale of heroism,death-defying escapes, and the classic play of good versus evil!

Introduction:A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT

July 17th, 1936The adventure begins on a dark and stormy night with the heroes

riding the elevator to the top of the Empire State Building in NewYork City. Each hero received an invitation from Dr. Bai Li who works

at a privately funded organization called the Hoffmann Institute forthe Advancement of Man.

During this scene the heroes find Dr. Bai Li unconscious on theobservation deck, and are suddenly attacked by ninjas rappellingdown from a stealth blimp! The blimp bears Gao Fang’s personalsymbol, the sign of the Golden Triangle. After dealing with theninjas, Dr. Bai Li implores for the heroes to travel to San Franciscoand meet Egg Fu Chow.

NINJA ATTACK!

Always start with a bang! The heroes arrive on the observation deck to find the man they

are looking for lying unconscious on the floor, when six ninjas of theGolden Triangle arrive! Feel free to adjust this number up or downdepending on the heroes’ skill and preparation (hopefully they don’tgo anywhere strange without being prepared).

The ninjas fight like demons in the driving rain of the storm, advancing steadily until within attack range. Naturally, they do notanswer any questions posed by the heroes. The heroes will have todefend themselves.

During the fight, have characters make Notice rolls at -2. Thosethat succeed spot a black blimp in the rain outside, with a goldentriangle emblazoned on it. When the battle turns against the ninjas, they make haste towards their ropes and attempt to rappel back upto the blimp. The ninjas should make Climbing rolls at a -4 penaltydue to the rain and wind.

Combat Modifiers: -1 penalty to all actions due to the darknessof the observation deck.

It’s a dark and stormy night, and the elevator swings like aBenny Goodman dance – rough and wild. It climbs up the 86stories of man-made marvel to its destination, the observationdeck of the Empire State Building. The elevator comes to anabrupt stop, tossing your lunch around for a moment. Whenthe doors slide open you are greeted by a dark room, lit only bythe jagged flashes of lightning from the raging storm cloudsoutside. Wind and rain pound against the glass barrier thatshields the observation deck. In the flashes of lightning youspot an odd thing – a body slumped on the floor.

Suddenly glass shatters the deck as numerous lithe figuresswing in from above. They are dressed entirely in black, butbehind the faceless masks you can see they have distinctiveAsian features.

What do you do?

The Bones of Chinatown was the second runner up of our 2009 Knights of the Dinner Table magazine Adventure Contest. We

were pleased with the entries and it was a tough choice narrowing them down to the finalists. The Bones of Chinatownutilizes the Savage Worlds rules system from Pinnacle Entertainment Group (who incidentally were kind enough to offer us

‘official status’). The adventure takes place in the gritty pulp world popularized by the likes of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell

Hammett, offering a different feel than the standard dungeon crawl.
