Zinder-what?

Assumptions…•Zindernoodles grow instantaneously on the day nutrients become available

•Zindernoodles always live to their full potential (1000 days)

•Zindernoodles die and lead to new growth on the same day

•Zindernoodles are evenly distributed across the landscape

•Blade-munchers never die

•Blade-munchers begin to reproduce on day 1

•On the day of maturity reproduction and consumption occur- not before

•Zardhogs mate for life. (If there are 3 Zardhogs there will only be 2 offspring)

•Zardhogs die the first day no food is available to consume

•Amount of precipitation is equal every day

Zindernoodle

Question 1

Initial conditions:

1000 Zindernoodles over 1000 acres of land, annual average rainfall equal to 10 inches.

When will the demise of the Zindernoodles

occur?

Death occurs when 1,000,000 plants are present in 1000 acres

Ultimate demise occurs on day 5000.

Day 5000: 1,087,383 plants y =1000*45 + 44(4000/5) + 43(3000/5) + 42(2000/5) +

4(1000/5) + (5000/5)

Day 4999: 319,383 plants

General Equation

Question 2: Wet Year

What happens when the annual average rainfall is equal to 20 inches?

Zindernoodles still meet their demise on day 5000

y =1000*45 + 44(4000/.884) + 43(3000/.884) + 42(2000/.884) + 4(1000/.884) + (5000/.884)

Day 4999: 614,501 plants.

Question 3:Is Precipitation Important?

Not particularly. It allows the species to increase its population more quickly, but it still will not meet its carrying capacity until

day 5000.

Question 4With 100 Blade-munchers present, how

long will the Zindernoodles survive?

This would be catastrophic! The zindernoodles would meet their demise by day 70.

Question 5How many blade-munchers should we introduce

to control the zindernoodle population?

We should introduce just one blade-muncher because any more would result in the rapid demise of zindernoodles.

Question 6How many Zardhogs must we introduce to control the Zindernoodles when just 40 Blade-munchers are present?

We should introduce 4 Zardhogs

Any more Zardhogs and our Blade-munchers would go extinct before they could reproduce. Fewer Zardhogs and the Blade-muncher population would be too large & they would kill off the Zindernoodles

Zardhogs

This also means that 4 Zardhogs need to be hunted each year to keep the population stable

(they reproduce 2 times a year)

National Treasure?

With 1000 Zindernoodles on 1000 acres, 10 blade-munchers, and 2 Zardhogs what will happen to the Zardhogs?

Question 7

The Zardhogs will starve by day 30 because they will have consumed all of the Blade-munchers already and will no longer have food to sustain their population. There will not be any more mature Blade-munchers until day 45.

The Zindernoodles will flourish for a while but without the predators present they will soon exceed their carrying capacity
