TRAVEL GUIDE

Page 2: The best wines from Margaret River - Cellarmasters · The best wines from Margaret River ... The region also draws interest because no two wines are the same. The pristine environment

In a relatively short space of time, Margaret River has grown to become a powerhouse of Australian wine. The first commercial vineyard planting was in 1967, and the region’s strength lies in its quality. Margaret River is a relatively

small producer of Australian wine on the national scale, but the region produces a massive 20% of the country’s premium wine.

The region also draws interest because no two wines are the same. The pristine environment has a variety of microclimates, but overall the climate is considered Mediterranean-like thanks to the maritime influence. In fact, comparisons are often drawn to the famous Bordeaux region, except that

Margaret River is twice as lucky when it comes to rainfall.

The vineyards enjoy everyday warmth tamed by cooling winds from the Indian and Southern Oceans. The region has the country’s lowest mean temperature

range and the most even warmth throughout the growing season.

As a result, Margaret River produces elegant, medium bodied reds that are fine in flavour and have the potential to age superbly. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted, followed by Shiraz and Merlot. White lovers can

also expect superb Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends as well as mouth filling, intensely flavoured Chardonnay.

5 Cellar Doors with Outstanding Reds

Woodlands Wines5 Red Star winery Woodlands Wines operates a 10 hectare vineyard located in the Wilyabrup Valley. Established in 1973 by David and Heather Watson, this proud family company crafts wines from dry grown vines maintained by hand using traditional methods.

Stand-out wine: Reserve de la Cave Cabernet Franc The Reserve de la Cave wines are produced from the original south-facing slope of the Woodlands Vineyard, planted between 1973 and 1976. The wines are made simply and only 300 bottles were produced from the current vintage.

CostYou can experience the range of Woodlands wines at their cellar door at no cost, which is open daily from 10am to 5pm and no appointment is necessary.

Expert tipWoodlands is also known for their superb Cabernet Sauvignon, which is still made from the same planting originally made by the founders in 1973. This style continues to win awards and gain critical acclaim and is listed in the Langton’s Classification of Fine Wines.

Cullen WinesCullen Wines are a 5 Red Star winery that were one of the pioneers of the Margaret River region. They produce long-lived wines in a highly individual style from their mature estate vineyards. They have organic as well as biodynamic certification, and are the first winery in Australia to be certified carbon neutral.

Stand-out wine: Diana Madeline Full of elegance and with brilliant colour and purity of fruit, the Diana Madeline is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Crafted from the Cullen Vineyard, it has a silky palate delivering dark fruit notes and some chocolate bitterness with a lovely touch of spice.

Cost The cellar door offers complimentary wine tastings of 6 wines and the flagship wines incur a small tasting fee. The cellar door is open seven days a week from 10am to 4.30pm and groups of seven or more require a booking. Private tours and tastings are also available.

Cape Mentelle5 Red Star winery Cape Mentelle was one of the Margaret River’s ‘founding five’ wineries, pioneering many of the region’s renowned styles. Today they are the benchmark for the quality of Margaret River wines, with many awards and trophies to their name including a coveted Jimmy Watson Memorial Award.

Stand-out wine: Zinfandel Introduced to the estate in 1974, Zinfandel is a favourite of Cape Mentelle followers. With a yummy fruit sweetness it has intense complexity and tannin structure. It’s a challenging variety to manage in the vineyard but patience in the cellar will be rewarded and it can be cellared from 10 to 25 years.

Cost Open daily for tastings, there is a tasting fee of $10 per person, which is redeemable on any wine purchase. They also host private experiences and tours.

Cape Grace WinesOften referred to as a ‘great little winery’ Cape Grace started in 1996 by Robert and Karen Karri-Davies whose family has been part of the Margaret River since 1875. They handcraft single vineyard wines that are generous in flavour and rich in the character of the unique Wilyabrup sub-region. The vineyard is managed under organic principles and traditional wine making is used.

Stand-out wine: Reserve Cabernet SauvignonGenerally produced as a limited release, the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is rich in forest fruits, wild mushrooms and blackcurrant leaf. Well structured and poised, it is the cream of the crop of Cape Grace Wines, and is rated 96 points by James Halliday.

CostThe cellar door is open daily from 10am to 5pm and tastings are complimentary.

Expert tipIf you want to be the first to know about Cape Grace’s limited release wines, as well as back offers and new releases, sign up to receive their regular newsletter. You’ll also receive invitations to Cape Grace wine events.

Vasse Felix is regarded as one of Australia’s draw-card winery destinations and welcomes visitors for a host of wine and culinary experiences.

Stand-out wine: Cabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon was the first red wine produced in the Margaret River and it has been made at Vasse Felix every year since 1972. Ideally suited to the region’s climate and deep, well drained soils, this Cabernet Sauvignon expresses the distinct regional profile with its plump, fruity core leading to fine, ripe tannins.

CostVasse Felix is open daily form 10am to 5pm. The contemporary tasting bar and wine lounge offer casual wine tastings by the glass or bottle with charcuterie and cheese.

Marq WinesRenowned Western Australian winemaker Mark Warren established Marq Wines to have some serious fun at the experimental edge of his finely honed craft. A self-confessed chemistry nerd, Mark uses alternative grape varieties and methods including wild yeast fermentation and partial grape drying to create quirky, lesser-known varietals with food in mind.

Stand-out wine: Sparkling VermentinoMarq Wines admits that they’re not sure if Sparkling Vermentino is crazy or genius, but it’s an interesting and fun alternative to traditional sparkling wine. The palate is fine, chalky and crisp with a delicate mousse, displaying citrus, pear and green peach flavours. Notes of brioche and rockmelon develop on the long refreshing mineral finish.

CostThe cellar door is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Once you’ve found a favourite, you can stay awhile and enjoy a cheese or charcuterie platter.
