Across from Jeronimos Monastery, reached via an underpass by its gardens, is the Discoveries Monument, built on the north bank of the Tagus River in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator.

It represents a three-sailed ship ready to depart, with sculptures of important historical figures such as King Manuel I carrying an armillary sphere, poet Camões holding verses from The Lusiads, Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Cabral, and several other notable Portuguese explorers, crusaders, monks, cartographers, and cosmographers, following Prince Henry the Navigator at the prow holding a small vessel. The only female is queen Felipa of Lancaster, mother of Henry the navigator, the brain of the discoveries.

Inside is an exhibition space with temporary exhibits, an interesting film about the city of Lisbon, and an elevator that takes visitors to the top for some bird's-eye views of Belem and its monuments.

Jerónimos Monastery is an expression of Portugal's wealth and power during the Age of Discovery. Built in 1502 during the reign of King Manuel I, it is famous for being the resting place of Vasco da Gama, as well as the place he offered prayers on the night before he set sail to India. The stone carving that decorates the columns and walls of the monastery is an imaginative mix of saintly figures and sea monsters, coils of rope and other maritime motifs. It remains the best example of Portuguese artistic expression and is a "must visit" when in Lisbon.

Tower of Belem

.

Built in 1515 to guard the entrance to Lisbon's harbor, the Belém Tower is a monument to the city's history as a world power during the Age of Discovery. The tower is built in the Manueline style, named for King Manuel I, with stonework depicting imagery popular during the age, such as exotic animals and historical figures. Now a World Heritage Site, the tower is an impressive and enduring monument to the city and culture that helped create the modern world

Page 14: The Best of Portugal featuring the Estoril Coast, Azores, & Madeira Islands

Pena Palace, Sintra

Pena Palace is the most complete and notable example of Portuguese architecture in the Romantic period. It stands on one of the rocky peaks of the Serra de Sintra, and blends in a surprisingly fortunate manner with its natural background of greenery and crags, testifying to the aesthetic potentialities of the project.

The Palace dates back to 1839, when the King Consort Dom Fernando II of Saxe Coburg-Gotha (1816-1885) bought the ruins of the Hieronymite Monastery of Nossa Senhora da Pena and started to adapt it for use as a residence, according to his Romantic taste.

The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. It is also used for state occasions by ther President of the Portuguese Republic and other government officials.

Page 15: The Best of Portugal featuring the Estoril Coast, Azores, & Madeira Islands

As his director of the works, Baron von Eschwege put into effect the King's revivalist ideas and round the restored ruins of the monastery raised a majestic pastiche inspired by the palaces and castles of Bavaria. Fanciful to an extreme, the architectural fabric of Pena finds much of its inspiration in the Moorish, Gothic and Manueline motifs of Portuguese art, as well as in the Wagnerian spirit of the Schinkel Castles of Central Europe

Quinta de Regaleira, Sintra

Royal Palace, Sintra

Quinta da Regaleira is an estate located near the historic center of Sintra. It is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Along with other palaces in this area, it is one of the principal tourist attractions of Sintra. It consists of a romantic palace and chapel, and a luxurious park featuring lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions. The palace is also known as "Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire."

Sintra’s Royal Palace is the best preserved medieval Royal Palace in Portugal, having been inhabited more or less continuously at least from the early 15th up to the late 19th century. It is an important tourist attraction and is part of the Cultural landscape of Sintra, designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Medications, baby formula and food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag.
