The Best sby Shaykh-ul-Ḥadīth, Ḥaḍrat Mawlānā Muhammad Saleem Dhorat ḥafiẓahullāh

Allāmah ‘Aynī v, the well-known commentator of Ṣaḥīḥul-Bukhārī, states that there can be three reasons for loving and admiring a person: beauty; virtue and excellence; or some favour conferred by the person. If we carefully look at the people we admire and love and ask ourselves as to why we have love for them, the answer will inevitably be one of the three reasons mentioned above.

Throughout the centuries, Muslims the world over have loved and admired Muḥammad s, the Messenger of Allāh S, more than anyone or anything else. To a Muslim, Rasūlullāh s is more beloved than anything. The books of history are filled with episodes that bear testimony to this fact.

Ḥaḍrat Muftī Muhammad Taqi Usmani ḥafiẓahullāh describes the extent of the love the first generation of Muslims, the Ṣaḥābah y, had for Nabī s. He writes that were Allāh S to have promised to increase the life of Nabī s by just one second if all

the Ṣaḥābah y (numbering over a hundred thousand) gave their lives in return, they would all have willingly given their lives in order to increase the life of their beloved by one second.

The question is, why do the Muslims have so much love and admiration for Muḥammad s? The answer is simple: their beloved was simply the best. He was not only handsome but the most handsome. He did not possess only one or a few excellences, he was the embodiment of excellences. His countless favours were not confined to Muslims only, but rather the whole of humanity is indebted to him for he brought them the light through which they can escape from the darkness of ignorance.

One only needs to study the speech of Sayyidunā Ja‘far t, which he delivered in the court of Negus (King of Abyssinia), to understand this fact. Sayyidunā Ja‘far t said:

“O King, we were people in a state of ignorance, worshipping

idols, eating the flesh of dead animals, committing all sorts of abominations and shameful deeds, breaking the ties of kinship, treating neighbours badly and the strong among us exploited the weak. We remained in this state until Allāh S sent us a Prophet from amongst us, whose lineage, truthfulness, trustworthiness and integrity were well-known to us. He invited us towards Allāh S so that we may proclaim His Oneness and worship Him. And to renounce the stones and the idols which we and our ancestors used to worship besides Him. He commanded us to speak the truth, to fulfil our promises, to maintain ties of kinship, to be helpful to our neighbours, to abstain from unlawful things and bloodshed, to avoid obscenities and false witness, not to usurp an orphan’s property and not to slander chaste women. He ordered us to worship Allāh alone and not to associate anything with him, to uphold ṣalāh, to give zakāh and to fast in the month of Ramaḍān.” (Aḥmad)

Moreover, the source of all the progress that we see today are the sciences developed by people from the Qur’ān and Sunnah.

His excellences were such

that even non-Muslims have praised him. When Heraclius, the Emperor of the Byzantines, received a letter from Nabī s inviting him to Islām, he summoned Sayyidunā Abū Sufyān t, then an ardent enemy of Islām, and asked him about the man Muḥammad s. Despite his enmity for Nabī s, Sayyidunā Abū Sufyān t could find only praiseworthy words to say about him. The staunchest enemy of Nabī s declared that Muḥammad s belonged to the noblest family amongst the Arabs and he also admitted that Nabī s was never accused of telling lies and had never broken his promises.

Upon hearing this Heraclius remarked, ‘If what you have said is true, he will very soon occupy this place underneath my feet. I knew (from the scriptures) that he was going to appear but I did not know that he would be from you. If I was sure that I would reach him, I would have undertaken difficulties to meet him and if I were by him, I would certainly have washed his feet (an indication that he would have presented himself in the court of Rasūlullāh s as a khādim).’ (Al-Bukhārī)

R. Bosworth-Smith remarked:

and of one spiritual empire, this is Muḥammad. Of all the scales by which one measures human grandeur, which man has been greater…”Indeed Allāh S has not created anyone greater than him. Sayyidunā Jibra’īl u once said: I have turned upside down the easts and the wests of the world (i.e. the whole world) and I have not seen anyone greater than Muḥammad s. (Al-Mu‘jamul-Awsaṭ)If this is the case, then why should such a personality, who possessed all the three elements for loving someone, to their highest degree, not be the most beloved to his admirers? Finding out about the sublime characteristics of the Beloved Nabī of Allāh s and understanding the love and admiration they inspire in his followers is sufficient to realise why Muslims the world over have been so enraged by recent events.

“By a fortune absolutely unique in history, Muḥammad is a threefold founder of a nation, of an empire, and of a religion.”After studying the Sīrah and life of Rasūlullāh s, George Bernard Shaw wrote:“I have studied him – the wonderful man and in my opinion far from being an anti-Christ, he must be called the Saviour of humanity.”Pandit Gyanandra Dev Sharma Shastri, at a meeting in Gurakhpūr, India (1928) said:“They (the critics of Muḥammad s) see fire instead of light, ugliness instead of good. They distort and present every good quality as a great vice. It reflects their own depravity… The critics are blind. They cannot see that the only ‘sword’ Muḥammad wielded was the sword of mercy, compassion, friendship, and forgiveness – the sword that conquers enemies and purifies their hearts. His sword was sharper than the sword of steel.”Alphonse de Lamartine said:“Philosopher, orator, apostle, legislator, warrior, conqueror of ideas, restorer of a rational dogma for a cult without imagery, founder of twenty earthly empires

Every person who comes into this world faces good conditions and bad conditions. No human is exempt from this rule of life. Jannah is the place of complete happiness and good conditions; on the other hand, Jahannam is the place of complete hardship and difficulties. This world is a combination of both good and bad conditions. In a ḥadīth reported by Imām Muslim v on the authority of Abū Yaḥyā Suhaib bin Sinān t, the Messenger of Allāh S said, “How wonderful is the case of the believer; for verily, all his conditions are good for him and this is only for the believer. If prosperity comes his way; he expresses gratitude to Allāh S and that is better for him; and if adversity befalls him; he endures it patiently and that is better for him”. (Muslim)Conditions are tests from Allāh S. He wants to test if a person shows gratitude, by giving him moments of happiness; and to see his patience by giving him moments of sadness. For example, the death of a family member or close associate is a tool for

The Test of Shukr and ṢabrMawlānā Ahmad Teladia Ṣāhib

sadness through which a person’s Ṣabr is tested. Another example is of a person who opens a shop and it prospers. Allāh S wants to see if a person gives zakāh, spends on his family, and does not squander that wealth. This is the test of shukr. Sometimes, Allāh S may bring about adverse conditions to see if a person is patient or not. Another example is of a person who is granted children. Allāh S wants to see if the person is grateful and does he fulfil the rights of his children. In some cases, Allāh S then takes the child away to see if he is patient.

As both of these conditions are related to emotions, we need to remain mindful of the guidelines of Shariah, lest we fall into the disobedience of Allāh S. At moments of sadness; one may cry, but must not utter any words which show he is objecting to the decree of Allāh S. This can be understood through a ḥadīth recorded by Imām Bukhārī v in which Anas t says that the Prophet s came to his son Ibrāḥīm t as he was breathing his last.

Tears began to roll down the face

At-Taqwā 6 October 2020

“And we will certainly make them taste the nearer punishment before the greater punishment, so that they may return”. (32:21)Another rule we must remember with regards to bad conditions, is that if a person has complete Dīn in his life, this does not mean he will not face hardship. The Prophet s himself faced difficult times. The demise of His uncle Abu Tālib; the demise of His wife Ḥaḍrat Khadījah i, and the martyrdom of Ḥaḍrat Ḥamzah t are all examples of this, despite Him being the most beloved to Allāh S.What should we do during good times? In good times we are obligated to be grateful to Allāh S by expressing gratitude verbally and by also using that blessing in that which pleases Him. At the same time, we must never look down at anyone who may be deprived of the blessing we may be bestowed with. Allāh S can turn the tables within seconds. What to do during bad times? 1. Evaluate your life and see where we have been disobedient to Allāh S and ask Him for forgiveness. 2. Spend in the path of Allāh S. 3. Turn to Salāh- The Prophet s

of the Prophet s. Seeing this, ‘Abdur-Raḥmān bin ‘Auf t said, “O Messenger of Allāh, you too are weeping?” He s said, “O Ibn ‘Auf! This is mercy.” Saying this, he continued to weep. He then commented, “The eyes shed tears and the heart is grieved, but we will only say that which pleases our Lord. O Ibrāḥīm! Indeed, we are grieved by your departure.” (Bukhāri)A point which we must always remember is that moments of happiness and sadness are tests. They are not the reward and punishment for the good or bad actions we may carry out. If it was the reward for good actions, there would be no need for Jannah and if it was the punishment for bad deeds, there would be no Jahannam. But at the same time, it must be understood that the mercy of Allāh S is such that He does sometimes give a bit of ease in this world due to the good a person may do. Also, sometimes Allāh S inflicts something upon a person in this world so he may be saved from the bigger punishment of the hereafter. This can be understood from the following verse,

At-Taqwā 7 October 2020

would resort to Salāh.4. Make du’ā to Allāh S to remove our problem. After doing the above we should be happy with whatever state we’re in, and accept it as the decree of Allāh S. If we truly understood that moments of sadness are from Allāh S as a test, then many objections we have upon being afflicted with such conditions would be dismissed. To conclude, tests whether good or bad come to differentiate between the true lover of Allāh S and the one who just makes claims. May Allāh S allow us to live a life of Shukr (gratitude) and Ṣabr (patience). Āmīn

Ḥaḍrat Mawlānā Sayyad Abul Hassan Ali an-Nadwi v narrates; “Due to not having a senior male figure in the home, my mother became solely responsible for my spiritual upbringing and nurturing. It was she who made me memorise the lengthier Surah’s of the Glorious Qur’ān.My mother was famed amongst our family for her compassion and love. After the passing away of my father, she was naturally more attentive to my needs and wants; more so than other mothers. Despite all this, she was very strict in two matters.Firstly, she would not tolerate any discrepancy in Salah. If I would fall asleep before performing ‘Ishā Ṣalāh; no matter how deep a sleep I would be in, she would wake me up and ensure I performed my ‘Ishā Ṣalāh and she would not let me go back to sleep until I had done so. Similarly, she would wake me up for Fajr Ṣalāh and send me to the masjid after

which I would be made to sit and recite the glorious Qur’ān.The second thing in which she would not accept any sort of nonsense, and in which her immense love did not hold her back was that if I had oppressed or behaved haughtily with any of the workers’ children (who were generally looked down upon as low class citizens), then not only would she make me ask for forgiveness, but she would make me beg that child for forgiveness. However much embarrassed I would become; my mother would not settle for anything less than that. This upbringing of hers benefitted me a lot in my life. I began to dislike oppression and haughtiness and to hurt someone and belittle them, in my eyes became a major sin. Through this, it became easy for me to accept my own faults and mistakes.”

A Mother’s Watchful EyeAdapted from Kārwan-E-Zindagi

Every Sin Carries the Effects of Disbelief"Our scholars and pious predecessors have noted that every disobedience of Allāh S carries within itself the taint of kufr (disbelief ) to some degree. This is why one who is constantly involved in sins is considered to be endangering his īmān.

A flagrant sinner will be disinclined to repent, and may eventually land himself in destruction by beginning to question faith, and eventually denounce faith in Allāh S altogether (may Allāh S protect us)."

Going Shopping“A person will be rewarded even when he spends money on his own family. However, this reward is dependent upon the person’s intention; if the intention is to acquire the Pleasure of Allāh S, he will be rewarded Therefore, when going shopping for groceries, clothes etc. make the intention, ‘I am doing this to fulfill the command of Allāh S of feeding and clothing my family and I am doing this for His pleasure only.’ Inshā’allāh, you will be entitled to reward.

It is unfortunate that we do not make an intention of pleasing Allāh S whilst carrying out those actions which we normally carry out as routine. If only we could learn to make the correct intention at the right time, then all our apparent worldly actions would become a means of acquiring reward and the pleasure of Allāh S.”

At-Taqwā 10 October 2020

Coronavirus – More than just a pandemic; the Coronavirus has proven to be an alarm bell and a wakeup call in ways that we as Muslims, and humanity as a whole, have never comprehended. From our sense of security; peace of mind and modes of socialising to those affectionate family relations; life as we knew it has been upended. Even the once seemingly trivial act of taking a breath of air with ease has become a notable gift and favour of Allāh S.One aspect of our lives which has been brought into the spotlight by this illness is that of secure sustenance. Whilst many of us where in a comfortable position with regards to our earnings, jobs etc, the coronavirus has laid bare the instability of our toils and efforts to earn an income. Countless people now find themselves in a period of financial struggle and uncertainty, whilst others are alerted to the grace of Allāh S, in the form of financial stability. Hence, it is the best opportunity to understand how a believer should behave and think

in regards to his livelihood and clear up some misconceptions. Allāh S mentions in the Glorious Qur’ān, “The responsibility of sustaining every creature on earth rests with Allāh.” (11: 6)This verse boldly informs us that ultimately, every creature is sustained by Allāh S, though the means and methods may vary. Some eat through their own efforts, whilst others eat through the striving of others. Who feeds an unborn baby? When we were in the wombs of our mothers, who was it that sustained us, and provided for us? Most definitely it is was the doing of our beloved and most kind Creator. We ourselves had no part to play in this regard. Thereafter, as a baby, Allāh S gave us the ability to cry. This crying would alert our parents to the fact that we were hungry after which they would feed us. As we progressed to our infancy, we where than able to speak and converse and express our hunger before our parents. As we progressed in life, a time came upon us where we

became financially independent.

After this whole journey, how unfortunate is it that when we do achieve this ‘financial independence’ we forget that the ability to toil and exert effort itself is something we are dependent on. Without physical and mental health; as this current pandemic is highlighting to us, where would our ‘independence’ be. At every juncture of our lives, it is in reality Allāh S who is sustaining us.

Therefore, if anyone finds themselves to be in a position of stability and ease, they should forever remember the blessing of Allāh S upon them and not fall into the vice of self-conceit and haughtiness.

The Story of Qārūn

In the Glorious Qur’an, Allāh S narrates the incident of Qārūn, the cousin of Mūsā u. Allāh S

mentions,

“Indeed, Qārūn was from the people of Musa, then he rebelled against them. And We had given to him such treasures as their keys would weigh too heavy for a strong group of people. (Remember) when his people said to him, “Do not be boastful, Surely, Allāh does not like the boastful ones. And seek the (betterment of )

the Ultimate Abode with what Allāh has given to you, and do not neglect your share from this world, and do good as Allāh did good to you, and do not seek to make mischief in the land. Surely, Allāh does not like the mischief-makers.” (28:76/77)But unfortunately, he did not pay heed to the advice of his people. Allāh S further mentions, “And those who were given knowledge said, “Woe to you, Allāh’s reward is much better for him who believes and acts righteously. But this is given to none but to those who observe restraint.”Then We made him and his home sink into the earth. So, there was no group for him who could help him against Allāh, nor was he one of those who could defend themselves.” (28:80/81)The great Muḥaddith, Mullā ‘Ali Qārī v has written that Qārūn as a young child lost his mother after the ship they were on, had sunk. Allāh S saved Qārūn by a floating plank of wood! “And seek the (betterment of ) the Ultimate Abode”The above verse tells us that the ‘Ulamā of his time advised him to use his wealth to secure his

At-Taqwā 12 October 2020

hereafter. In reality, when we spend on the poor and needy, we are not assisting ourselves, rather it is they who, by accepting our donation, are favouring us. Ibrāḥīm an-Nakha’ī v would say, “The beggar is a delivery man to the hereafter.” (Qurtubī)

Difficulty – An opportunity to earn:

Allāh S states in the Glorious Qur’ān, “Surely We will test you with a bit of fear and hunger, and loss in wealth and lives and fruits, and give good tidings to the patient, Who, when a difficulty afflicts them, say: “We certainly belong to Allāh, and to Him we are bound to return” (1: 155/6)

Mufti Taqī ‘Uthmānī Hafizahullāh explains,

“Since we belong to Allāh S, He is the best judge of what should happen to us, and since we are bound to return to Him, our suffering in this world is temporary, and, once we return to Allāh, all worldly sufferings will not only vanish for good, but will be replaced by eternal blessings and bounties. Whenever one considers these facts, then no suffering in this world can make him impatient.” (The Noble Qur’ān).

How excellent is the Condition of a Believer! The Prophet s beautifully mentions,“How wonderful is the case of the believer; for verily, all his conditions are good for him and this is only for the believer. If prosperity comes his way; he expresses gratitude to Allāh S and that is better for him; and if ad-versity befalls him; he endures it patiently and that is better for him”. (Muslim)The Blessing of TawakkulIn conclusion, if we find that we are in a difficult financial situation, we should;1. Bear the difficulty with patience - In it lies much reward2. Console ourselves with how short-lived it will be - Through this, solace is gained.3. Continue to rely on Allāh S, whilst adopting means of alleviation - For just as He sustained us before, He will most definitely help us again. May Allāh S grant physical, spiritual and financial relief and ease to all those who are passing through these testing times, and may He eventually grant all ‘āfiyah - tranquillity of the ultimate Abode. Āmīn

Perhaps the most dangerous of diseases is when a patient refuses to acknowledge the doctor’s diagnosis of it; when he blatantly declines the existence of the disease that is coursing through his body, destroying it beyond repair. The very same can be said for sins. When a believer refuses to acknowledge a sin as destructive and detrimental, he too leaves his soul vulnerable to intangible harm. This sin will gradually embed itself into his routine; he will begin to think of it as ordinary; until the sin no longer remains a sin; until it has devoured his faith. And yet, we hear the echoes of denial, reverberating throughout the same excuses time and again. “It’s not affecting anyone else”, he says, increasing the volume. “You’re acting like I’m putting the whole family ‘under the influence’” he chuckles, as his 5-year-old brother repeats the lyrics, profanities and all, in complete naivety.“Only Allāh S can judge me” she mumbles; shuffling her feet, brazenly, forgetting that surely Allāh’s S judgement is to be feared more than any other being.

The Devils Prayerby Bint ‘Abdul Mateen

“Don’t worry, I’ll say astaghfirullāh later” she huffs, dismissing the conversation, presuming that the Angel of death will be dismissed as easily. The very same Angel of death who has extracted the souls of many an unsuspecting person - all whom had planned to offer their repentance ‘later’.Elation shadows his face as he rapidly re-tweets: “One good thing about music, is that when it hits you, you feel no pain.” He swings back and forth like a pendulum as the beats permeate through his body. Little does he know, that this elation he feels is the very ecstasy that infiltrates kufr (disbelief ) into his heart.“It’s a nashīd! So, the music’s fine!” he insists. “Don’t you know,” he stresses, “Even the Saḥābah y sang poetry in the presence of the Prophet s!” remaining unaware of the stark difference between his state and that of the Saḥābah y. He is tapping his feet to the rhythm, hair-brush in hand, mimicking an on-stage performer. Whereas, when poems in praise of Nabī s would be recited in the presence of the Saḥābah y, their heads would be bowed, with tears rolling down their cheeks, and

At-Taqwā 15 October 2020

Imān blossoming in their hearts. These were the very same Saḥābah ywho exerted every effort to ensure that the words of our Nabī s would be preserved. So that when the latter generations heard that Nabī s had said,“Most certainly, there will be in my ummah people who will make lawful fornication, silk, liquor and musical instruments,” (Saḥīh-ul-Bukhārī) they would abstain, step back, and realise that no matter how many self-proclaimed Shaykhs or Keyboard Muftīs authorised the permissibility of music; Nabī s had expressively forbidden it. The very Nabī s who 1400 years ago prophesied the headphone phenomenon of today: “...There will be people from my Ummah...on their heads will be instruments of music...” (Ibn Mājah)He s who described the aftermath of the proliferation of music to be frequent earthquakes and the disfiguration of humans (into monkeys and pigs). The recent surge in natural disasters attests to this, and although we have not yet witnessed the physical disfiguration of humans into monkeys and pigs, certainly we have seen their characteristics

amongst us.

If this is not proof enough, then ask a ḥāfiẓ of the Qur’ān, or in fact, any person who has attempted to memorise a verse on a day when music has infiltrated their ears; had they been able to memorise? Or had learning the words become harder? Almost heavy on the heart? They will guarantee you that it had been difficult. An amount that generally took 10 minutes, had taken an hour. And even if they had managed to learn the expected amount, remembering it at a later date proved near impossible. Because this is the glaring, unadulterated truth; “The words of the Qur’ān and the music of Shaytān can never combine in the heart of a believer.” (Ibn Al-Qayyim)

Look at effects of music on inanimate objects. An experiment was conducted at Al-Hudā Institute, Canada in which two apples were taken. An email from the father of a student reads: “We took an apple which also has 60-70 percent water content like human bodies. We cut the apple into half, put each half in a zip lock bag and then for 7 days played Qur’ān for one half of the apple and music to another half of the apple ...”

The results came in and a

to emanate the whiff of smoke from his clothes and more lethally, become susceptible to smoking related illnesses such as lung disease. This is despite him never having touched a cigarette in his life. Similarly, ‘passively’ listening to music with absolutely no desire of embracing satanic and immoral ideas can destroy one’s mind and soul just as passive smoking can destroy one’s heart, lungs and life. So, which will it be? Music is a drug; a disease; an epidemic plaguing the homes and hearts of the ummah of the Messenger of mankind s. It hypnotises its victim into semi-slumber, contaminating his thoughts and spiralling him into a dark, dark world, diseased and disintegrating in to the folds of sick fantasy. Its blackness inhabits the mind thus leaving no room for light to shine; the light of the love of Allāh S and His Prophet s; the light of the tilāwah of the Qur’ān; the light of the sound of His name and the light of faith in his heart. Lightness or darkness: which will it be? It can only be one or the other. Because certainly, both cannot prevail.

[[[

unanimous conclusion was met. Music was lethally toxic. The half of the apple exposed to Qur’ān was almost all white, with scattered brown blemishes. In the same amount of time, the other half of the same apple had blackened and become rotten, emitting a pungent stench. This was the effect on a mere inanimate object. Visualise the consequences of music on a delicate, beating heart. Note: A repeat experiment took place in Reflections, a school in Karachi, and proved parallel results. And if that isn’t convincing enough of the toxicity of music, then surely ‘backtracking ’ is the deceptive cherry on the cake. A sinister art form of inserting hidden messages into a track, discernible only when played backwards but still very much infiltrated into the subconscious mind. Easily available backtracking apps prove that even the most seemingly innocent songs are not free from these sinister messages. Take, for example, ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.’ The process of backtracking reveals that the coded message delivered by this popular nursery rhyme is: ‘I wish there was no God.’ (May Allāh S protect us from such thoughts). A day will come when a non-smoker always in the company of smokers begins

‘Amr ibn Dīnār v narrates that he once heard a man announce, “If anyone wants to know the consequence of the prayer of an oppressed person, then let my story be enough for him”. His interest awokened, ‘Amr v approached the man and asked him about his cryptic announcement. The man began, “One day, I was walking along the shore when I bumped into a fisherman hauling his daily catch. I asked him to give his fish to me but he refused. I then offered to buy it off him, but again he refused. I became enraged and struck him on the head and forcefully took his fish. As I was walking away, a fish bit my thumb but I didn’t give it much thought. However, when I reached home, I noticed that my thumb had swollen up considerably. I used some home remedies and went to sleep without too much worry. The next morning, I saw that my thumb had become even worse. Alarmed, I hurried to the doctor who immediately ordered that the thumb be amputated. Despite the thumb being amputated, the infection had already spread into my hand. Subsequently, the doctor ordered that my hand too should be amputated. To my horror, I noticed that the effects of the infection had begun creeping up along my arm. The trauma of having a thumb and then a hand amputated put me into complete panic and I ran out of my house screaming for help, feelings of hopelessness completely overpowering me. In this state of desperation, despondency and weakness, I sat under the shade of a tree and felt my eyes shut. In a dream, I heard a voice say, “How many more of your limbs do you want amputated? Why don’t you just seek forgiveness from the person you oppressed.” Hearing this, my eyes opened and I realised the truth of what I had heard. I immediately set off to find the fisherman. I found him again, hauling his daily catch and explained to him what had happened and begged him to forgive me. He immediately began praying for me and simultaneously my arm began to look and feel better. He then said to me, “Come with me, it would be very wrong of me to let you go without repaying you for the loss I
