THE BERLIN WALL• 1940’s-1950’s- hundreds of thousands of

people living in East Germany emigrate to West Berlin

• Soviet Union criminalizes people leave East Berlin, especially young educated people (doctors, scientists, etc…)

• 1961- Soviet Union closes the border and begins to build basic fence between East and West Berlin

THE BERLIN WALL• Eventually more fortified wall is built; the

“death strip” is created

• Barriers, armed guards, dogs, mines, flares and barbed wire are used to deter people from crossing

• This does not stop many from still trying

THE BERLIN WALL• Between 5 and 10 thousand people were

able to escape over, around or through the Berlin Wall

• Approximately 200 people were killed trying to cross the border

Berlin Wall is torn down by the people of Berlin, Germany reunites as one country
