POTENTATE “2017” MARK A. SIMARD

Dear Nobles, Ladies and friends Lady Linda and I would like to Sincerely Thank Kenny Thoroughgood and Lady Dixie, for all of their hard work and effort in organizing the Potentates Valentines Ball. Dixie and her team of volunteers did an amazing job decorating the hall and preparing a wonderful Hors d’ oeu-vres station. Dixie with the help of Ken-ny, John and Amy Freeman as well as others made her famous Crab Rangoon, spring rolls and meatballs. They also pre-pared a chocolate fountain with an array of fresh fruit for dipping. The World famous Bektash Stewards were on hand (Dick, Bill, and Brent) they kept the cam-els milk flowing for the evening. The event was well attended with over 80 Nobles, Ladies and guest. The Cheshire Shrine Club was represented by Tony and Holly Malloy and John and his daughter Joyce Brophy came down from Thornton to enjoy the evening with us. Thank you for making the journey. Lady Linda and I greatly appreciate it. Dixies idea for a pie auction was a tremendous success. Every-one had a lot of fun. Thank you to the ladies who graciously donated the pies, and to all those who participated. We raised $665.00 dollars.

Portsmouth Shrine Club will be sponsoring their annual St. Patrick’s Day corned beef and cabbage dinner with a pound auction to follow on March 18th at St. James Lodge 77 Tide Mill Rd Hampton, NH. Tickets are $12.00ea and open to all mem-bers and guest. This is always a fun event and well attended, if you have never been, I highly recommend it! Make sure you make your reservation before it’s too late!! The dead line for reservations is March 10th. Contact Ed Daneault at (603) 436-9323. Believe me! You don’t want to miss this event it’s always a good time! For those of you that have never attended a pound auction. You simply wrap any item that weighs approximately one pound. Dis-guises it as best you can! The items are then auctioned off in a blind auction. There are always some very creative gifts and no one goes home disappointed. (hopefully) bring your sense of humor!!

Lady Linda and I along with Oriental Guide John Freeman and Lady Amy at-tended the Cheshire Shrine Clubs annual meeting and election of officers. It was a wonderful evening and the food was spec-tacular. If you have never attended a Cheshire Shrine Club meeting or event I highly recommend it. They have a great group of Nobles and Ladies who work hard for the Shrine in the western part of the state.

One of the high-lights of the Installation Banquet in January for me personally was The Fez Lecture performed by Illustrious Tom Brison Past Potentate 2002. If you have never had the opportunity to meet Illustrious Tom Brison and Lady Marilyn highly encourage you to spend some time with them. They are amazing people and are both dedicated to Shrine. Lady Linda an I have learned a lot from them over the years. Thank You, Tom, & Marilyn. Tom is a 2nd generation Mason/Shriner. He started his Masonic career in DeMolay,

then went on to become a Mason and the Master of his lodge, and Then Po-tentate of Bektash in 2002. I asked Tom to give the Fez Lecture at the Installa-tion Banquet because I feel it embodies who we are as a Fraternity and our be-liefs in helping children. I think every new Shriner should read the Fez Lec-ture. I have asked to have it printed in this issue of the Bektash News. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. At a recent Unit meeting I was dis-mayed to hear that some Nobles feel as though the Finance meetings are for the Divan members only. Let me make it perfectly clear Bektash belongs to the NOBILITY. There is no one Noble more important than another including the Divan and Potentate. The Finance Meetings and finances are open to all the Nobility of Bektash. And the Nobili-ty is always Welcome. I personally en-courage all members of the Nobility to attend the Finance meetings. They are currently on the 3rd Monday of the month and start promptly at 5:30pm. If you don’t take an interest in what goes on in your Shrine center, Then who will??? This includes Stated meetings

and Fund Raisers as well. Your next Stated meeting is March 20th. Camels Milk will be provided by the Stewards.

I received an e-mail today from Tim McMahon (Boss Clown) in regard to exploring the option of starting a new unit. Tim would like to start a musical unit of Guitar players/musicians. (See page 19). I know we have quite a few musicians at Bektash that would love to get out and get together with fellow mu-sician/Shriners and jam. We have plenty of room at Bektash and you don’t have to worry about disturbing the wife or neighbors! If interested, please send Tim and email at timmcmah-onnh@gmail.com. Good Luck guys getting this off the ground, it sounds like a lot of fun!

Finally, there has been talk about start-ing a shooting sports club or unit. If you are interested please send me an email at msimard@comcast.net if we have enough interest we will put together a meeting.

We have now made it through the typically two worst months of Winter. We had a bad week during the 2nd full week of February, but since then it has-n’t been bad at all. I’ve got to get out my fly rod

and reel to get them in shape for another season of fly fishing for brook trout and salmon. I wish to report that we have all of our parade vehicles registered with the State of NH and covered under our insurance policy. So, when you’re ready to start using them, you are set to go. This month our Potentate, Ill. Mark Simard and our newly elected Oriental Guide, John Freeman will be traveling, up to Ottawa, Canada to attend the Northeast Shrine Association Mid-Winter Meeting. Also, joining them will be Tom Brison and myself. Tom is my very able Assistant Secretary-Treasurer and I am the Secre-tary-Treasurer of the Northeast Shrine Association. Bektash Shriners should make every effort to support the Fall Field Days in Ottawa, August 17-20, 2017. The Potentate has asked the Drum Corp to make every effort to fit this into their schedule and we hope all our units will try their hardest to be there marching or rid-ing on the street. It will be a good time. We are considering the cost of renting a bus to take us all there and get home safely. We are working on the bus ride cost and should have it ironed out in the near future. Stay tuned. We had a wonderful evening at our Bektash Valentines Dinner Dance in February. It was well attended and if you missed it, you missed a fun night. The food was very good and all the attendees really supported the raffle. Most of us stayed to the closing bell and then some. Our thanks go out to the Thorougood’s, Ken and Dixie, for giving us an enjoyable and fun evening. I know we will be back for the next one.

Sorry about our last mee ng but Mother Na-ture made me cancel. Safety is always our first concern. Our next mee ng will be Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Winnipesaukee Lodge in Al-ton. (See mee ng details on the next page.) Nobles, SIMADI needs new members and though we are mostly from the lakes region and East, we are open to all Nobles. We meet 6

Membership Moments Nobles; The Membership Committee still needs your help in attracting new members to Bektash. We would like to reinstitute the Ambassador Pro-gram or Liaison’s to all the Masonic Lodges in the state. We need someone in each Lodge to step forward and be our spokes-person. We will provide you with Shrine literature which hopefully you can put out in your Lodge. You can also ask the Master of your Lodge if he would like a member of the committee to come and speak for a few minutes. The Membership Committee is devoted to bringing new members to Masons and Shrine. We want all the lodges in the state to know that we are here to assist and support them. If you are interested in becoming an Ambassador please call or email me and we will get you started. Dates to mark down on your calendar for membership functions:

Membership Brunch

Nobles; The Membership Committee along with the Bektash Divan will be hosting a Sunday Brunch on March 26th from 10:00 to 1:00. The purpose of this brunch is for nobles to bring potential new members and their ladies to Bektash for a chance to meet and have a question and answer period on what it means to be a Shriner and especially what it means to be a Bektash Shriner. A representative from all of the Bektash Clubs and Units will be there as well to promote what they have to offer to everyone. This type of event has not been held for a long time. There is no charge for the meal though donations will be welcome. Reservations are a must so we can be sure to have enough food for all, just call the Bektash office and let them know how many will be in your party (don’t forget to bring your Lady).

The buffet menu is: eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, juice and coffee.

Retention Program

Bektash is instituting a Retention Program that will assist Nobles who are having financial issues due to fixed incomes, loss of em-ployment or family issues. This program will allow us to retain No-bles on the rolls instead of losing them to demits or suspensions. This program is only for Nobles who still hold an active Masonic dues card.

This fund will be started and maintained by fund raisers and dona-tions from clubs units and generous Nobles. We have numerous Nobles that could use some assistance. We help the hospitals and transportation funds, so it would be great to help some who have supported Bektash so valiantly in the past. This fund will be separate from the General Budget and only the Potentate, Recorder and Membership Chairman will know who is being offered this assistance. To start the fund off we will be having a “Bakeless Bake Sale”. ( Details on next page.) Nobles, as chairman of the membership committee there are cer-tain duties that I am required to perform, besides recruiting new members, retaining current members, it is also my duty to keep you up to date on the current membership. Unfortunately, we now have 159 nobles who are in arrears for two years (2016/2017), and another 244 nobles who have yet to pay their 2017 dues. I know it is very easy to forget to put that check in the mail but we would really like to get everyone up to date as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact me by with phone or email. We will be able to work with you to solve any issues that you might have regarding your dues. Our goal is to retain all no-bles. CHESHIRE SHRINE CLUB 2017

As I sit here contemplating what to write about the Cheshire Shrine Club I am reminded that we have had to re-structure in the past to become an active Shrine Club. We can and will do it again! On the 29th of January we held our annual meeting with the Potentate and parts of the Divan present. The club voted to move forward and be more active. Noble George St.Laurent was elected to be our new president and he is eager to move the club forward, grow and prosper. The first thing we have to do is make it known that we are alive and well, and this arti-cle is a start. In the past we have missed some of our goals and we are going to try to do better. This year we ARE going to have a picnic again, probably in July but your input is requested. A Potentate and Ladies Night will be held on the first Sunday in October, so place that on your calendar. We have plans to start the ZEF club again and a member has already volunteered to chair this event. Look forward to more information in upcoming issues of the Bektash News as we move forward. We do have other things in mind also, such as supporting the First Lady’s project on Bullying. If anyone out there has ideas and suggestions please call us - we are open to suggestions. IASYC WANTS YOU The Associa on of Shrine Yacht Clubs (IASYC) was organized in 1971 by repre-senta ves from MAASYC represen ng a number of Shrine Yacht Clubs whose members were affiliated with the boa ng fraternity. It is a fraternal, self- sup-por ng Shrine Associa on dedicated to the furtherance of the aims of Shrinedom. It has grown from its’ infancy on the East Coast to all fi y States and many foreign countries. Its’ expansion con nues with no end in sight. It is considered by most to be the most family oriented organiza on in all Shrinedom. We are in the process of selec ng representa on in each Shrine Center. The primary assignment is to help each Shrine Center Grow their Yacht Club/ Marching unit base. Shriners of North America, is an Interna onal fraternity based on fun, fellowship, and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, truth and relief. Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of hospitals dedicated to providing one-of-a-kind specialty pediatric care, innova ve research and understanding teaching programs. In April 1973 the Board of Directors of the Interna onal Council officially recog-nized the Interna onal Associa on of Shrine Yacht Clubs “IASYC”. The IASYC body represents among its affiliated Shrine Temple Yacht Clubs the ambassadors of good will among the boa ng fraternity. Bektash Mariners Shrine Yacht Club was founded in March 2012, and Joined the IASYC in May that same year. BMSYC is an inner body providing good fellowship among members of Bektash Shrine who share an interest in boats, boa ng and kindred pleasures-such as skiing, fishing and cruising. Since its incep on the club has lived up to its Masonic principals and has grown in membership each year. During 2015, all summer mee ngs have been well a ended and held at water-front loca ons. Boat cruises have taken place as well. BEKTASH BINGO COMMITTEE

To the people that help us work bingo.

The Bingo Committee thanks you all for the hard work you have been doing. Some nights, we have ran short of help and people have been doing double and triple jobs. We just want to let you know that it is noticed and appreciated. We have had a few peo-ple out because of sickness and or injury we hope all are doing better.

This being said we can always use help. If you have some free time on a Thursday night come on down and join us. You don't have to be here every week or stay until Bingo closes. The Bin-go doors hall open at 4 pm and we are usually done by 9 to 9:15 ! There are various tasks we need help with: we have people that help on the floor calling back bingo cards, some call the Bingo games, others sell pull tabs or bingo games. We also have peo-ple working in the "back room" on the computer counting the money and setting up the games to be paid out. We can use help in any of these places. Don't worry if you do not think you can do it because we can train you!

Bektash Pe on Instruc ons Listed below are a few helpful steps so that a pe on can be pro-cessed without delay in me to be voted on.

1. Prior to either a Stated Mee ng or a Ceremonial, please get your pe ons in early so that there is enough me to process them.

2. All Pe ons have to be submi ed to the Bektash Office seven days prior to the mee ng.

3. A current copy of the applicant’s Masonic Blue Lodge card must be a ached to the pe on when it is submi ed.

4. All line items on the pe on must be complete and accurately filled out. If no informa on is listed either draw a line or write N/A.

5. Be sure to list the candidate’s hat or Fez size.

6. The Bektash Office will not accept faxed or emailed pe ons.

7. All Candidates must report to the designated mee ng place at the mes scheduled.

THE100MILLIONDOLLARCLUB The 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children have provided lifesaving and life-changing medical care to more than 800,000 children, regardless of their ability to pay. The money to provide these needed services at 22 hospitals comes from many sources: community donations; fundraising events; investment income; and support from the Shriners Inter-national. As health care costs increase, Shriners Hospitals needs your help, more than ever, to continue to provide more specialized care, offer medical education and conduct more research. Too many people believe that if they cannot donate or leave a large sum or money, their gift will not count. Every contribution helps. In order to encourage donors to contribute to Shriners Hospitals for Children, the HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR CLUB was es-tablished in 1972. The club is named for its goal of adding 100 million dollars to the endowment fund through gifts or bequests of $100 or more.
