Nobles, Ladies and Friends of the Rhode Island Shriners,
Welcome! Summer is here, and the parade sea-son is underway, so let's start by saying, onbehalf of Lady Jill and myself, THANK YOU to theShrine Ladies for the magnificent spread andcookout after the July 4th Bristol Parade, andmore especially for Lady Maureen McGuire fofrorganizing and seeing the day through.
Speaking for myself, it makes me proud andthankful that we have such wonderful Ladies inour Shrine who are always ready to help in any way they can. Iappreciate their support and everything they do from the bottomof my heart. And speaking of the Ladies, I hope everyone has hadthe chance to see the new sign that was donated by the Ladies tobe used at parades for Shrine Awareness. It is a “facts and figures”statement of our hospitals.
Our first parade was the Saylesville Parade. I regret that I could-n't participate in that one . . . I was on the Rhode Island ShrinersCruise to Alaska! I really wanted to be at the parade (not). TheGaspee Parade was without a doubt as great as always. I thank theDirector's Staff and the Aides for cooking and providing refresh-ments. Kudos also to the Director's Staff for providing coffee anddonuts at each parade. Sometimes that seems like a thankless job,but we all appreciate the effort and enjoy the coffee. Thank you.
Our Strawberry Festival was once again the hitof the town! A thank you to Andy Hencler andLady Jan for the tremendous job and to allwhohelped make it a success.
At the end of June, the representatives, theRecorder and Treasurer, along with Grand MasterMost Worshipful Rickard Sokoll, attended theShrine Imperial Session in St. Louis, Missouri.Everything went very well, and we are headedinto the future with a positive outlook for ourShriners Hospital and fraternity.
We had our Circus Days atRingling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey
Circus and the Big Apple circus.Thank you all who helped.
Our Stated Meeting on July 21 waswell attended and was very informative.
Looking ahead: We will have our Ceremonial on August 9th. I askall 50-year members of the Shrine to attend for a special celebra-tion. We are hoping to have a great number of candidates for ourShrine. On August 15th we will help the Olympics Party, so get intoyour competitive spirit, brush up on your skills and talents andlet's have some fun.
Augst 10th is the Grand Lodge Picnic. Tickets are available atthe Shrine Center. The 20th is Shrine Night at the Pawsox. Get yourtickets early and plan to come out for a cookout, a march onto the field showing the Shriners pride, and then enjoy the game atfabulous McCoy!
The Northeast Field Days will be held August 21-24 inManchester, NH. If you haven’t made your reservations by now andyou’ve decided you want to attend, call the office for availability.
Looking forward into September, we can’t forget the “Half-wayto St. Patty’s Day” celebration on September 26th. (March 17th inSeptember?) Have fun while partaking of corned beef 'n cabbage, and green beer. Check the Upcoming Events section of the Scimitarto keep abreast of details for future events at our Shrine Center.
Once again, Nobles . . . your help and support is greatly appre-ciated. We could not exist without it. Everything that you do doesnot go unnoticed. We are thank, I am thankful for all the men andwomen of our Shrine what are there to support us, to help whenneeded, to particpate in parades, to represent us in the communi-ty, we truly are a Shrine family. And as I always say, “One personcan be a crucial part of a team, but one person cannot be a team.”So let's make the Rhode Island Shriners a great team. Let's recruitnew players, have fun and never forget that we do it all for the kids!
God Bless . . .

SCIMITAR August/September 20084
As usual, this past sum-mer was Shrine events time.As Masonry nin generalslowed down for the summer,Shrine activities ramped upand kept us all busy. It was aperfect day for the GaspeeDay parade. The gazebo-shel-ter outside the Scottish RiteCathedral was a beehive ofactivity as the Director's Staffdispensed hot dogs andsoda.
There was another day ofnear perfect weather for aparade in Bristol on the 4thof July. Despite the long day,it is quite an experience andhonor to march in thenation's oldest 4th of Julyparade. The press coveragein the ProJo was very goodfor our Shriners. And wewere seen on TV. Anunplanned event was seeingBob Correia pushing LouClark's little car along theparade route after the vehi-cle suffered an unexpectedbreakdown.
This month, I'm proud tointroduce news from theGrand and Glorious Order ofthe Hillbilly Degree. The Li'lRhody Clan #66 has been res-urrected by the Director'sStaff. So far, the Clan hasexemplified three degrees tobring Rhode Island Shrinersand their Ladies into theClan. Yes, Ladies can be Clan members. Last year sev-eral car loads of RI Shrinerstraveled to Aleppo Shrine tobe made Hillbillies and thusbe able to confer degreeshere. The current officers ofThe Li'l Rhody Clan are:
Grand Rabban of the Clan:Steve McGuire. Keeper of theCob: Clay Roffey. Guardian ofthe Still: Jerry Plemmons. HatFitter and Ritual Prompter:Ill. Clark Cate. Bard: BogieHencler.
We have other offices tofill so are looking for volun-teers. Butcha gotta be aHillbilly first.
We have conferred theGrand and Glorious Order ofthe Hillbilly Degree on ourDivan, as previously report-ed. And in June upon themembers of the Director'sStaff and their Ladies, as wellas on a few other VIPs. Thiswas a very fun evening. TheNoble's degree was conduct-ed first . . . while the Ladieswere socializing in theMcIntyre Room. By the timethe Ladies were called, theywere in a very good mood, ready for anything. And whata raucous Hillbilly Gal degreeit was. Inducted into the Clanin June were 12 Nobles and17 Ladies!! Thanks to Ill. TonyPereira for the photographs.
Here's the deal. There areseparate degrees for theNobles and their Ladies. Nowthat we have Hillbilly Gals, the intention is that they con-duct the degrees for theLadies. Now that the Clan isin operation, we plan to con-fer degrees on all RI Shrinersand their Ladies who want tojoin. We plan to have the nextdegree in September or earlyOctober.
If you want to join theClan, please send an e-mail
request to: [email protected]. Or put yourwritten request in theDirector's Staff mailbox onthe basement level oppositethe elevator. We will mail youan application form.
You do not have to be amember of the Director'sStaff to join the Clan or be anofficer, but we wish youwould join us. The Clan isopen to all Rhode IslandShrine Nobles and theirLadies.
October 17th, is going tobe a Sadie Hawkins dinner-dance at the Shrine Center. Itwill be a hillbilly theme andwe have some really funthings in the planning stage.Of course, you will want tocome in your hillbilly outfit. So mark your calendar now.

Hi, Nobles,WOW! Where has the time
gone? 2008 is half gone, Itseems like we just got start-ed! As promised, here are thereports on previous events.
On May 4th, the Legion ofHonor held its annual flagdisposal ceremony, completewith a firing squad (courtesyof the Cranston Police) and abugler (courtesy of theShriners’ Brass Band). Fromeverything I have heard, Itwas a very moving experi-ence, The procedure for dis-posing of a retired flag is avery moving experience, onewhich many have never seen or even know anythingabout. So it was fitting thatCommander Lacross and themembers of the Legion ofHonor took the time to do itright. I had several peoplesay that it brought tears totheir eyes, and they weretruly touched by the cere-mony. Thank you to every-one who participated,
Our first parade wasSaylesville. We had 16 Noblespresent and put eight flags inthe air. Gaspee Days wasnext. We had 19 Nobles pres-ent, and you had to see this,– we had 12 flags in the air. What a sight!
The fourth of July broughta venue change for the RIShriners, After 21 years, theShriners returned to Bristol,Prior to the 4th, there weremany rumblings about thelast time the Shriners wentto Bristol. There were a lot ofreservations and concernsabout returning, Well, exceptfor the waiting, which we doa lot of, it was a great day.The Legion of Honor had 11
Nobles, and we had sevenflags in the air. It was a per-fect day for a parade, slightlyovercast, no beating sun, norain, and a beautiful breezefor a good part of the day. Wewere lucky enough to be ableto listen to some phenome-nal bands practice. To makethe day complete, we wereall just hanging around lis-tening to one of the incredi-ble marching bands practice, when a man pushed a youngman in a wheel chair over tothe Nobles that were watch-ing them. The man told usthat the boy in the wheelchair was his son, and thathe wanted to come over andthank the Shriners for allthey have done for him hiswhole life, He is now 18, buthe was proud to show off thebraces that he had gottenfrom the Shriners. His fathersaid that when he saw usstanding there, he had tocome over and thank us.That certainly made anotherparade worth the trip.
We stepped off at about12:40 to a rousing applause, that didn’t let up for two anda half miles. If there was any doubt it was quicklysquelched when peoplestarted coming up to us andthanking us for coming back.It was a great day – long, buta great day just the same.
After the parade, we weretreated to a feast put on bythe Shrine Ladies in theMcIntyre Room. Thank youagain, You done good . . . (ful-filling yer obligation) and thedawg thanks ya, too.
June also brought the theShriners Strawberry Festival.Strawberries, strawberries,
and more strawberries, andthe cornish game hen wasexcellent – another great jobdone by the kitchen andwaitstaff.
Well, how about theLegion’s CAR SHOW? On July13th, the Legion of Honor, along with the Rhode IslandStreet Rodding Association, held it’s 1st Annual Car Showat the Shrine. Hopefully, this
will become an annual eventthat everyone will partici-pate in. We had 115 cars reg-istered, which was reallygood considering we werecompeting with four very bigcar shows in the area on thesame day.
I just want to say from theLegion of Honor, thank youeveryone for your help. Wewould never have been ableto do it by ourselves, Wewere overwhelmed by thevolunteers that showed upand stayed most of the day.
Cars on display at the 1st Annual Car Show at the Shrine Center . . . great
weather was a bonus for those who came out to show and view a variety of
antiques and classics. More pictures on page 34.

SCIMITAR August/September 20088
First . . . let me begin byexpressing my personal, sin-cere thanks to each andevery Noble and theirrespective Units for offeringthe valuable time and dedica-tion that has made theparades that we as Shrinershave attended so far thisyear true successes
At the Saylesville Memor-ial Day Parade on May 26thin the Town of Lincoln westepped off at 11a.m. with 83Shriners present. On June14th we showed our localand statewide community
spirit in the Gaspee DaysParade with 111 Shrinersmarching the red, white andblue on Narragansett Park-way. With the big change inour agenda to march in theBristol 4th of July Parade andeven after a long waiting peri-od before we stepped off, wemade “our coming back” toBristol well known with 87men on the street along withthe Most Worshipful GrandMaster and 11 Masons repre-senting the Grand Lodge ofMasons for the State ofRhode Island.
There was a lot of discus-sion on the bus coming back, that we would probably beon the front page of theSaturday Providence Journal, but I already knew thatBuddy Cianci was going totake that spot. We didreceive some great presscoverage about the RhodeIsland Shriners, our ShrinersHospitals for Children andour return back to Bristol, since 1987. We also ran a fullpage article in the Bristol 4thof July Souvenir ProgramBooklet of which 50,000copies were distributed in allof the East Bay newspapersprior to parade. It was a longwait to get started, but onceyou made your way aroundthat first corner of theParade route and heard the“welcome back, Shriners”from the sidelines, you thenknew that the change andwait was all worth it.
On August 2nd we will par-ticipate in the Maple SugarBowl Parade in Hanover.August 23 is the NortheastShrine Field Days Parade inManchester, NH. On Sunday,September 28 we will bemarching in the SouthKingstown FirefightersMemorial Parade to benefit
the South Kingstown Fire-fighters Relief Association.and on October 12th we'll be marching in the FederalHill Columbus Day Paradefollowed by the 30th AnnualAutumnfest Parade in Woon-socket on October 13th.
Please see the updatedParade schedule located inthe current events section ofthis issue of the Scimitar.
Let’s make the most ofthis successful parade sea-son . . . the Rhode IslandShriners are definitely aparade favorite!
Rhode Island Shriners 2008 Parade Reportby Noble Wayne Sutton, Parade Marshal
The Rhode Island Shriners has received some great press during this parade
season. The above picture appeared in the Providence Journal after the parade
in Saylesville. Such press coverage can only enhance public awareness of the
Shriners true mission as we work from the heart for our kids. Thanks to each
and every Shriner and unit who are committed to parading!

SCIMITAR August/September 2008 9
From the Recorder’s Desk from page 3
Those dog days of Augustare here, and it is most likelyhot and humid. Next month isSeptember, and the coolbreezes and delightful daysmake the approaching fall awonderful time of year. By thetime the next Scimitar is pub-lished, the fall foliage will havearrived, and that dreadful“snow” may be arriving at anytime. Also, the Snowbirds willagain be migrating South to awarmer clime where, at leastwhen you listen to them, thecost of living is lower. Basedupon the cost of last deliveryof heating oil at my house, I amsure they are right in theirassessment.
Nobles, much has tran-spired over the first eightmonths of this Shrine year, some positive and some nega-tive. However, all in all, Ibelieve harmony exists withinthe organization although differences of opinion existbetween individuals. Thosewho voice their concernsdon't do it just to hear them-selves talk. They do it becausethey care about the organiza-tion and its operation. Myproblem lies in the fact thatmany who continually voice
negative concerns when askedto step-up and take a positionof leadership as a TempleOfficer or other position with-in the Temple always have reasons not to accept. Why isthat? Is making a commitmentto serve for seven years beforebecoming Ill. Potentate/CEO(total of eight years service)too much to ask of a Noble? Isit because it is easier to criti-cize than work on an issue andtry to resolve it? Is it becausewe don't have the correct peo-ple in positions of leadership? Is it because Temple Officersare looked down upon ratherthan looked up to? Is itbecause your Officers are per-ceived to not listen? Is itbecause a Noble's allegiance isat the Unit level, and as long asthe Unit has no real issues let'scomment on the Temple'sissues? In all likelihood it is acombination of all of theabove.
Nobles, let's go forwardworking together as a teamwith a positive attitude. Let'sbecome OPTIMISTS and leavefor those who come after us asNobles and Officers a legacythey will be proud to maintainand continually build upon.
Put FUN back into being aShriner, but realize thatresponsibility goes along withhaving fun.
Lastly, your Chief Rabban isworking on his budget for theYear 2009, and believe me hehas a lot of work ahead of him.The anticipated increases inutility expenses and medicalinsurance are going to impactmonies available for Templeactivities. Note, as I write thisarticle, we have not yet votedupon the recommended duesincrease and assuming that itdoesn't pass, the Temple activ-ities portion of the budget isgoing to be hit hard. Shouldthe increase or a portion of theincrease be approved, a largeportion of those additionalfunds will go to offset our utili-ty and medical coverage costincreases.
In closing I hope all had agreat summer, and may God'sBlessings be upon you.
Respectfully,
Ill. Leon C. Knudsen, PPRecorder
Campers . . . Rejoice!!!The Northeast Camel Caravan Might Be
Just What You’re Looking ForThe Northeast Camel Caravan was con-
ceived in 1992 by a group of campers fromAleppo, Anah, Kora, Melha, and Rhode Islandwith the objective to offer Nobles who likecamping the opportunity to meet and enjoythe fellowship of like-minded Shriners andtheir families. It was hoped that such a groupwould be beneficial not only to promote camp-ing weekends and trips with fellow Nobles, butalso to be of help in accommodating campingrequests at Shrine functions. The originalintention of the group was to meet in theSpring in Maine and hold a second outing inthe Fall, which would give campers an oppor-tunity to camp throughout the Northeast.
We are an independent group consisting ofmembers from various Shrine Centers and notpart of the Northeast Shrine Association.
We have also been able from our smallfundraisers to make donations to theTransportation Funds of the Shrine Centerswhose Nobles participate in our weekends.
Today the group continues to camp the firstweekend in June for its Annual Meeting at
Bayley’s Camping Resort in Scarborough,Maine. Bayley’s Camping Resort is a very finefacility offering a shuttle to nearby Atlanticbeaches, three swimming pools, hot tub, kayaking, etc. It is great family camp-ground. Kora held their Spring Ceremonialthere this year. Although we have not campedtogether in the Fall for several years, we arehopeful of planning a weekend in the Fall of2009.
If you would like to enjoy a camping week-end with other Nobles and their families, weinvite you to join us at Bayley’s CampingResort on May 29-31, 2009. Our yearly dues arepresently a comfortable $5 per year with a $3initiation fee.
To join or to receive more informationabout he Northeast Camel Caravan, pleasecontact Fred Simmons, Secretary/Treasurer bymailing your request to 61 Morrill Road,Hooksett, NH 03106, by telephoning Fred at603-625-9509/ You may also e-mail him at“nmsimmons@verizon. net”.

Let’sStart with
anOldie!
Ataxi pas-
senger tapped thedriver on the shoulder to askhim a question. The driverscreamed, lost control of thecar, nearly hit a bus, went upthe footpath, and stopped cen-timeters from a shop window.
For a second everythingwent quiet in the cab, and thenthe driver said,
“Look mate, don't ever dothat again. You scared the day-lights out of me.”
The passenger apologizedand said, “I didn't realize thata little tap would scare youthat much.”
The driver replied, “Itsokay, that's not really yourfault. Today is my first day asa cab driver. I've been drivinga funeral van for the last 25years.”
Here it is, AUGUST, at last! And here I am writing this inJuly and wondering how hotit will be by the time you readthis. So much for preparingmonths ahead. Actually,August is prep for my favoritemonth of the year, September. But before I get too far aheadof myself and forget what Iwas trying to remember fromway back when I was thinkingahead, let's talk about whathas happened that I doremember.
The weather really cooper-ated, and the annual GaspeeDays Parade was a big timesuccess. As usual, lots ofgood folks showed up on thesidelines, and the clowns hada great time keeping everyonelaughing. That is our job, youknow! Anyway, this one is thebest because the Shrinersreally turn out to help cele-brate the event that some feelwas the instigator for ourmarch to freedom way back in
the 17 hundreds. It seems thisyear that the number of drumand fife corps increased overprevious years. Besides that, their costumes are almost aspretty as the Shriner Clowns. But then again, who is pretti-er than our gang?!!!!
You know what? I am get-ting ahead of my self again. Iforgot to mention one of thegreat parades that we partici-pate in every year. OnMemorial Day weekend wewelcome UNCLE SHAM backfrom the wilds of Florida thenhead for Saylesville and havea ton of fun before and duringtheir annual parade. I alwayslook forward to this one andhave never been disappoint-ed. This year we had the sun(always a two-wate-bottle dayfor me) at our backs and lotsof great people to laugh andclown around with. One of thefun things that we experienceis taking pictures with lots ofkids and some pretty girlstoo. All part of the job. Backto what we have done.
The clowns made anappearance at the WestinHotel to support, are youready? “The American HeartAssociation, Children's HeartHouse, Heart and ObesityIssues Fundraiser.” Howabout that for a mouthful. BBBlue, our Illustrious BossClown aka Mike Barboza,STUMBLES (Doug Aldrich),GILLY (Gil Fontes) andSKETCHY (Carl Meyers) allgot a chance to rub elbowswith the tails and blackbowtie set for a great cause. And all of that at the Westin,no less!
One of the highlights of theyear has to be the appearanceof the Shriners in the BristolFourth of July parade after anabsence of 21 years. I am sure
that a lot will be written aboutthat venture, but I will saythat, given the circumstances, the clown attendance wasgreat. Our newest clownsmade a super showing andlooked real good along withthe vets and even “CaptainAmerica” made the trip. Thanks to all who participat-ed. It must have been a verylong but gratifying day.
The other day I was brows-ing through some oldScimitars and read an articleabout the boat trips on the“Southland” out of Galileeback in the 80s. The childreninvolved were out patients ofthe Hodges-Lawton Unit atRhode Island Hospital. I won-der if anyone has consideredstarting those cruises upagain? I had the opportunityto clown on two of them, butthey were conducted byViking Tours out of Newport. Both were lots of fun and veryrewarding experiences forme, not to mention the happyfaces on the kids and adultswho accompanied them. Justa thought!!!!
WELCOME! WELCOME!!Let's take a few minutes to
welcome our newest clowns.DIMPLES (Domenic DiStefano)lives in Tiverton with LadyKarielyn and son Peter. He is amember of Jenks #24 Lodge ofMasons in Pawtucket.
Tom Holton, clown nameLUCKY, is also a member ofJenks Lodge #24 and lives inCumberland with Lady Maria.
Also, a red nosed welcometo Henry Delovio (SUNSHINE)who resides in West Warwickwith Lady Maureen. A mem-ber of Manchester #12 Lodge, his claim to fame is that he iscitizen of the great state ofHawaii, which he visits often.
Last but not leastly (is thatcorrect terminology), we wel-come to our midst JerryBrock, clown name yet to bedetermined. Jerry is a mem-ber of Tom Smith Lodge ofMasons in Cranston andresides in Johnston with LadySheryl.
I have had the pleasure ofclowning with LUCKY andDIMPLES and both have greatcostumes and seem to havemastered excellent makeuptechniques. To all of you newclowns, the very best of luckand we hope you stay with uswell into the future. Thanksfor your participation.
Time for a Brain TeaserWhat classic poem starts
with the words: “Under thespreading chestnut tree, Thevillage smithy stands . . .”
If anyone knows theanswer, let me know. I wouldlike hearing from you.
With all that out of the way, let's talk about what has beenhappening in July and August.First of all, we had a car showon the 13th of July. It wassponsored by our goodfriends in the Legion of Honor.I am sure you all know thedetails on that event and howsuccessful it was. On the 20thof the month was the annualCircle Laurier Bike Run.These people do some greatthings to help Shriners andkids.
That closes out July, butdid you take a moment to cel-ebrate some of July's lesserholidays? Just a few exam-ples. On the 3rd we mark thebeginning of the famous,“DOG DAYS” and on the 18thwe pause to reflect on “CowAppreciation Day.” So find anice looking cow and give herthanks for all those greatdiary products.
Let's see, what else!!! Oh!Some famous birthdays takeplace in July, and you proba-bly missed them both, but Iwill tell you anyway. The oneand only Bugs Bunny wasborn on the 27th andForgetful Jones (who in theworld is Forgetful Jones?) wasborn on the 15th of July. Howabout that for some trivia.
Forging ahead to themonth of August, we can lookforward to hot weather, thethreat of hurricanes andother calamities such as LATOMATINA. This is a specialholiday celebrated every yearin the town of Bunol, Spain. Itseems this classic is billed asthe biggest food fight in theworld. Lots and lots of rottentomatoes are exchangedbetween the participants forthe two-hour battle forsupremacy. Of course in theend, nobody wins and thefiremen come in and washaway all those tomatoes! ORyou could go to Italy and jointhe festivities at IvreaCarnaval. Here the mainweapon is the orange for“communicating” with eachother. So, as you can see, themonth of August is a veryexciting one all over the

SCIMITAR August/September 2008 11
This is our second noticefor our two Scimitars. Havenot heard from anyone onwhether they like it or not.The only thing with me is try-ing to get information tocover two months.
The May and June metingswere spent on trying to getour by-laws changed. Afterdiscussion, pro and con, Ithink it hs been resolvedbecause they voted on it atthe June meeting. Unfor-tunately, I was not therebecause my son took me outto dinner and the PawSoxgame as a Father’s Day gift. Ijust could not say “No!”
There were 14 memberspresent at the May meeting, and 12 members present atthe June meeting.
On July 4th were marchedin Bristol. It was a long day.We left the Mosque about 7:10a.m., and we didn’t step offuntil 12:45 p.m. We were wellreceived by the huge crowdon the sidelines, and we had87 members on the street . . .that included nine TempleGuard members. It is gettingbetter all the time. We werelucky that we didn’t get anyrain during the paradebecause it was raining early inthe morning. When wereturned to the Mosque, wewere provided with a nicecookoout. It was really appre-ciated.
By the time you read this,we will have been to Hanoverand back where a good timewill have been had by all . . .as usual!
Next is the Northeast inManchester, NH on August 21-25. Check the Scimitar foryour parade listings. I do nothave a complete listing withtimes, etc. Currently, my listincludes the South KingstonFirefighters Parade onSeptember 28th, the FederalHill Columbus Day Parade on October 12th, and theWoonsocket AutumnfestParade on October 13th. Ibelieve that step-off inWoonsocket is at 9:30, but docheck the Scimitar listing tobe sure.
There are no new membersreported on the Sick List.Connie Ball is back at homeand doing okay. HowardSherman is still in CedarCrest. I just finished talking tohim, and he said to say helloto all the Temple Guard mem-bers. His phone number atCedar Crest is 401-464-7255. Iknow he would like to hgearfrom his old buddies.

So it’s a hot summer day, andthe church is sweltering, thepreacher is droning on and onwhen in a flash of brimstonesmoke, Satan himself appears at
the alter! The preacher faintsfrom fright and there’s pandemo-nium as the churchgoers climbout windows while others runscreaming for the doors . . .except for one man sitting in thefirst row. Satan sees this and he isnot pleased. He stomps over andstands in front of the old manwho sits there serenely. “Don’tyou know who I am?” bellowsSatan.
“Yep,” replies the old man.“Aren’t you afraid, mortal?”
he demands. “Nope,” is the old man’s
reply. “Why not? Satan bellows,
flames flying from his nostrils. The old man replies, “Been mar-ried to your sister for 37 years.”
E-replyI was having trouble with my
computer, so I called Eric, the11-year old who lives next door,to come over. His bedroom lookslike mission control. Eric clickeda couple of buttons and solvedthe problem. As he was walkingaway, I called after him askinghim what was wrong. He replied,“It was an “id ten t” error. Well,I didn’t want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired what anid ten t error was . . . just in casethe error occurred again. Ericgrinned. “Haven’t you ever heardof an id ten t error before?”“No,” I replied. “Well, just writeit down,” he said, “I think you’llfigure it out.”
So I wrote it down. ID10T . . . I used to like Eric!

Nobles,I wanted to share this e-

Yesterday, three of usKena Klowns (BooBoo, UncleSham, and I) had lunch at“Eggspectations” in Chan-tilly. We did our usualshenanigans and entertainedour waitstaff with a fewmagic tricks and some one-liners. That prompted somequestions about who wewere which in turn lead to adiscussion about Shriners.Well, lo and behold one ofthe young women there ws aformer teacher’s aide. Itseems a former student ofhers just became a part ofour hospital family. She sentthe following communicationto me:
Dear Mr. LaCava,My name is Lauren Pane,
and I’m the waitress youwow-ed with your magictricks on Tuesday afternoonat Eggspectation Restaurantin Chantilly. I’m writing toshare with you some infor-mation I received just hoursafter meeting you and yourfellow Shriners.
You see, a couple of yearsago, I was an assistantteacher at a school isSterling. After returning fromwork (and meeting you), Ireceived a call from a friendand teacher at the school to
inform me that a formerstudent of mine had a sesri-ous accident with a sparkler. It caught his shirt on fire, andhe is now suffering with 2ndand 3rd degree burns. Shewent on to tell me that hewas being transferred to theShriners Burn Unit you men-tioned in Boston.
I found all of this to berather incredible consider-ing I had never heard of theShriners before, and on theday I meet three wonderfulrepresentatives of the organ-ization, I learn that a child Iam very close to is nowbeing helped by them.
Having met you and theother two gentlemen thatafternoon, I feel comforted inthe fact that this little boy isin good hands. Either thisworld is a lot smaller than Iever thought it was, or therewas some greater power atwork the afternoon you threedecided to lunch at myrestaurant.
There is no other purposeto this email other than forme to express my gratitudefor the work you guys do tohelp those most deservingamong us . . . children.
Thank you, and I hope tosee you again soon.
All my best,Lauren Pane
Illustrious Frank DiMasciorecently received the follow-ing e-mail of appreciation forShriners’ works:
Last Sunday our familycelebrated the graduation ofHolly Nelson from SalveRegina University. Holly con-tinues to be a wonderful mir-acle from God.
She was born withGolderhar Syndrome whichincluded bilateral cleft lipand palate, visuallyimpaired, hearing impaired, and numerous facial anom-alies. Her IQ was supposedto be between 70-90, but it isnot. Holly was born January5, 1986. It was at that timewe learned Holly would needmuch medical care andnumerous surgeries.
In February 1986 weapplied to Shriners and wasaccepted. What a Blessing!Shriners paid for everythingthat our insurance did not.We have our house todaybecause of the RI Shriners.Holly has had 30 surgeries inher lifetime so far including acranio-facial surgery and twojaw surgeries. Those particu-lar surgeries were each12hours in length.
We are so thankful to Godand to RI Shriners for theirsupport. God does answerprayers, miracles do happen.

Awareness Sign NowBeing Used in Parades
And, have you noticed the-new addition to the July 4thBristol parade? To promote“Shrine Awareness,” the RIShriner Ladies had a signmade up to be used inparades to make peopleaware of who the Shriners areand what Shriners do for chil-dren. We were so proud to seethe work was completed intime for the Bristol parade.
Our thanks and gratitudeto Jerry Brock for designing, creating, and making thissign. Thanks also to BillJohnson for putting theframework together and set-ting the sign up on the trailer.
Both Jerry and Bill gener-ously volunteered their timeand expertise in making surethat the sign would be readyfor the July 4th parade.
The Ladies are responsible for seeing that Shriners work is promoted at parades
through the “Facts About Shriners” signage. It appears to be working!

The spectatorsand the car owners had nothing but praise. They really appre-ciated the shade which provided seating out of the sun. Manycommented that the food was the best they have had at a carshow, Thanks everyone, And the best part of all: everyone, andI mean everyone, asked us to please have it again next year.
This was truly a learning experience, but most of all itproves what we can accomplish if we all work together. Wewere hoping for more than 200 cars, but the outside competi-tion proved to be more than we expected. Thank you again,EVERYONE for all of your help.
Now, on to the future, August 1 - 3 Hanover Weekend

world, but now we must getback to what is going on withthe Rhode Island Shriners.
The Hanover Weekend ispast, and I'm not sure, but Ididn't hear any reports aboutUNCLE SHAM'S famous “REDEAR SYNDROME” so I cansafely assume that thingswent very well. Now it is onto the Northeast Field Dayswhich will be held inManchester, NH this year onthe 23rd of August. Rightnow, pending more info fromthe Boss Clown, it may be aday trip for some, if not all ofthe clowns. We'll wait andsee.
Lastly, on the 30th, anoth-er motorcycle run, this timesponsored by Manchester#12 Lodge of Masons. A tipof the old tiny straw hat tothe riders who spend theirand money to help others.
A Short Story from MoofusDuring WW II on a cold
and wintry night, Lt.Morphus Jamiel was on abattle line engaged in thefamous Battle of the Bulgewhen in the night someonepassed gas rather loudly.Everyone opened fire at this
unknown somewhere in thedark. The next morning adead German soldier was discovered lying in the bat-tlefield. The morale of thestory? If you have to pass gasin a war zone, make sure youare deep in a large hole.
Don't forget, August 3-9this National Clown week. Finda clown and give him aGREAT BIG HUG.
I'll close this month with asaying from nobody in par-ticular: “Curious people askquestions . . . determinedpeople find answers.”
Til next time, KEEP SMILIN!
