1 The Bartlett School of Architecture Summer Skill-ups 2015 Summer Skill-ups The Summer Skill-ups are intensive 5-day courses offering a wide range of computer and portfolio training to hone existing skills and develop new ones. These can be taken in conjunction with the longer Bartlett Summer Studio programme or as stand-alone courses. Portfolio A 27-31.07.15 The Portfolio course provides students with an introduction to what a Bartlett portfolio contains. Find out how to prepare a comprehensive portfolio for application to undergraduate architecture programmes or gain specific skills to polish your existing portfolio. Students will receive advice about what constitutes a good portfolio; what should be included in it; the range of drawing and communication skills needed; looking at image and text; and connecting fine art practice to graphic design. Students will be encouraged to make their own decisions, focused on their own area of interest, to compile a portfolio to reflect their own personality and aspirations. Sketchbook work and ongoing research will form an integral part of the preparation process, with the tutor showing you examples of current portfolios and students’ sketchbooks to set the tone, whilst giving you research-related tasks to perform each day. The cost of paper, folders and printing is not included in the course. Skill-up 1 27-31.07.15 Computational Fabrication Skill-up: Modular 3D Printing Richard Beckett, BiotA Lab/RC7 tutor, B-made 3D Printing Centre Director Richard an architect/designer from London. He initially studied physiology and biochemistry before going to work in Research and Development for Glaxosmithkline as a physical properties scientist. He then went on to study architecture at the University of Westminster and The Bartlett. His current research explores new modes of digital production and simulation in architecture, as well as advances in the field of digital fabrication including 3D printing and 7-axis robotic milling. Skill-up 2 02-07.08.15 Computational Design Skill-up: Flexible Computation Manuel Jimenez Garcia, MArch U19 tutor, MArch AD RC4 tutor Open Classes coordinator, Plexus organiser Manuel Jimenez Garcia holds an MArch from the Architectural Association and has previously taught at the AA, Universidad Politecnica Madrid and Universidad Europea Madrid. As well as teaching on AD, he is Unit Master of MArch Unit 19; co-curator of the Bartlett Plexus and co-founder of Emeidiem, an architecture practice based in London. Skill-up 3 17-21.08.15 Computational Fabrication Skill-up: 3D Printing – Hybrid Model Making Barry Wark, Computation Tutor, UG0 and UG2 Barry is the founder of BIOPHILE, a design research practice investigating the territory between biophilia, biomimetics and materiality. His research also explores the potential of digital tools to push materiality beyond analogue means towards a heightened sensuality in space that is inspired by nature. He is a director of ARCH-T, a company focusing on the exploitation of digital design and fabrication tools in architectural design.
