Greetings Fair Th ree Rivers,

Autumn is clearly upon us. Aft er the extreme weather this year, we are grateful to see this cool clear calm Autumn. It’s fi ne weather for tending to your homes, your gardens, and your Barony. Of course, we hope the Barony will be well represented at Queen’s Prize on November 12th. Th is celebration of research and craft is, unfailingly, an amazing display. We hope everyone who enters and everyone who attends has a wonderful day learning even more about their favorite historical interests.

Th e following weekend, much closer to Th ree Rivers, is the Toys for Tots event in Wyvern Cliff e (Jeff erson City). Not only is it nearby, the Barony brought home the prize for most toys donated last year (once again). Th is is a winning streak we want to see continue. Even if you can’t make it to the event, please donate toys for the children. Th e toys should be still in original packaging, NOT gift wrapped, and cost at least $5.00.

Where ever November takes you, please take time to work on a lovely period item to donate to Winter Court auction. Not only is the auction the Barony’s single largest source of income for the year, it is pure entertainment and a great place to fi nd wonderful gift s for your friends, your family, and yourself! Start saving now.

Enjoy November. Winter will be here far too soon.

~ A Letter from the Chronicler of Three Rivers ~Greetings unto the populace of Th ree Rivers,

My name is Julian Ó Néill and I am the new Chronicler for Barony of Th ree Rivers. I would like to thank Liesel for her excellent work in service to the Barony as our previous Chronicler.

As a result of this transition of leadership, there have been some internal and external changes made to Th e Barge. Th e most visible of these changes is the new half letter sized booklet format. Th e new format contains a two month calendar of events in the centerfold section. I intend for Th e Barge to become a “one stop shop” for information and news impacting the Barony.

Th e Barge has also undergone numerous internal changes. Th e layout was completely recreated using Adobe InDesign. Graphics editing is now handled by Adobe Photoshop. Th ese internal changes should greatly improve the structure and layout of Th e Barge.

A note on deadlines: Th e new general deadline for Th e Barge is the Tuesday of the last full week (Sunday-Saturday) of the month. Th is deadline is subject to change due to major events so please check the calendar oft en. Deadlines will be published in the calendar centerfold section. Generally, production will start on Tuesday evening and continue throughout the fi nal weekend of the month.

Finally, if you have any questions, concerns, or articles for Th e Barge, please contact me at [email protected]. I will follow up as soon as possible.

Th ank you for your support!

In service,

Julian Ó Néill

Submitting Content to The BargeBy Julian Ó Néill

Th ere have been serveral changes to the rules and regulations surrounding SCA publications over the last year. Th ese changes have added several layers of complexity and paperwork to the normal content submission process.

To simplify things for content submitters, I have compiled a check list for the most common types of content submission to Th e Barge. If you have any question or concerns, please contact the local Chronicler, Julian Ó Néill, for assistance.

To submit a story, poem, or other non-photographic “creative work” to Th e Barge for publication:

1. Create the content.2. Obtain a copy of the SCA’s offi cial “Creative Works Release Form” from the Chronicler’s offi ce or at: http://www.calontir.org/fi les/pdf/publication/forms/sca-creative-work-release-fi llable.pdf3. Fill out and sign the form. Th e “Mailing Address” section can be disregarded if you are not requesting a copy sent via postal service. Th is is a legal document.4. Send or bring the form and content to the Chronicler. Th e forms and content can be sent electronically (scanned copy) or physically. Electronic copies of the content are strongly preferred.

To submit a photograph “where an individual’s facial features are identifi able (not obscured by helmets, garb or shadowing) in the photograph”:

1. Take the phtograph.2. Obtain a copies of the SCA’s offi cial “Model Release Form” from the Chronicler’s offi ce or at: http://www.calontir.org/fi les/pdf/publication/forms/sca-model-release-fi llable.pdf . You will need a form for each identifi able subject in the photograph. An “identifi able subject” is a photograph “where an individual’s facial features are identifi able (not obscured by helmets, garb or shadowing)[.]”3. Have ALL identifi able subjects in the photo fi ll out and sign a separate “Model Release Form”. Th is is a legal document.4. Obtain a copy of the SCA’s offi cial “Photographer Release Form” from the Chronicler’s offi ce or at: http://www.calontir.org/fi les/pdf/publication/forms/sca-photo-release-form-fi llable.pdf

Consorts for Royal lists.

Corpora states in the Glossary- Consort: Th e member for whom the combatant fi ghts in a Royal Lists.Royalty: Th e persons who hold the offi ces of Sovereign or Consort of a kingdom or principality. Th e heirs to those positions are also considered royal, but Corpora uses the terms “royalty” and “reigning royalty” interchangeably, and only to refer to Sovereigns and Consorts.

Section C- Branch Designations-It clearly states that Kingdoms are ruled by Kings and Queen and a Principality is ruled by a Prince and Princess.

Corpora Section IV. Royalty B. Qualifi cations-Each competitor in a Royal List must fi ght for a prospective consort of the opposite gender.

All combatants in Royal lists and or Principality lists must be of the opposite gender. In order to change this rule the SCA must establish cause and follow the process for changes in Corpora. Th e Board upheld the Society Seneschal’s interpretation that any changes to allow same sex consorts must follow the process for changes to Corpora. (Additional information on this subject is presented below in the Census 2010 topic.)

Census 2010 Committee

Th e Census 2010 Committee Chairman, Eric Langhans, requested that the Board approved publication of census data covering Peerage Options and Same Sex Consorts. Th e Board approved the release of the data to the SCA Website and encourages members and participants in the SCA to review and comment on the data and information. Th e Board is reviewing options pertaining to options available regarding the results and of the census data and is soliciting comment on possible options.

[Editor’s Note: Th e SCA Census Data is offi cially available at: http://www.sca.org/scacensus2010/ ]

Comments are strongly encouraged and can be sent to:SCA Inc. / Box 360789 / Milpitas, CA 95036

Report on the SCA Census[Editor’s Note: Th e following is an abridged version of the October 2011 edition of the SCA President’s Report covering the SCA Census portions of the report. Th e most recent full report is available from: http://www.sca.org/BOD/pres-report.pdf ]

Society Seneschal

Th e Society Seneschal, Kim Harvey, was asked by the Board of the Directors to make policy interpretations on two items at the July 2011 board meeting. Policy Interpretations were requested on the topics of same sex baron and baroness and on same sex royal consorts. Her review of these two items follows in detail.

Corpora Section V. Territorial Barons and BaronessesA. Appointment and Removal - Th e crown shall appoint a territorial Baron and/or Baroness according the laws and customs of the kingdom when a branch is granted baronial status, or whenever a new Baron and/or Baroness is required. Th e Barony’s opinion on the matter must be requested and received in writing, and the appointments must not be substantively opposed by the populace of the barony. Territorial Barons and Baronesses are offi cers and must maintain appropriate membership status.

In researching this issue it was noted that in the late 1980’s the then board of directors discussed and ruled on this issue in regards to the Baronage. Th is issue was reviewed from the written word and compared to Crown and the Qualifi cations set in Corpora for Royals and Royal lists. It clearly states “consort of the opposite gender” in the Qualifi cations of Royalty. In the above mentioned section regarding Baron/Baroness this is not mentioned. Th e law reads according to the laws and customs of the kingdom. Th at being said, the Society Seneschal made the following recommendation. Th at the current Board of Directors take note of the previous actions of the Board of Directors of the SCA, and take no action. It is up to the individual kingdoms and said kingdoms’ law as to how this section of Corpora is interpreted. Kingdoms have the right to decide by insertion in their own kingdom law the gender qualifi cations of the territorial baronage. Th e Board of Directors upheld this interpretation.

Th e Kingdom of An Tir requested a change to Corpora regarding same sex 7

5. Fill out and sign the form. Th is is a legal document.6. Send or bring the form and content to the Chronicler. Th e forms and content can be sent electronically (scanned copy) or physically. Digital photographs are strongly preferred.

To submit a photograph “where an individual’s facial features are NOT identifi able (not obscured by helmets, garb or shadowing) in the photograph”:

1. Take the phtograph.2. Obtain a copy of the SCA’s offi cial “Photographer Release Form” from the Chronicler’s offi ce or at: http://www.calontir.org/fi les/pdf/publication/forms/sca-photo-release-form-fi llable.pdf3. Fill out and sign the form. Th is is a legal document.4. Send or bring the form and content to the Chronicler. Th e forms and content can be sent electronically (scanned copy) or physically. Digital photographs are strongly preferred.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding these policies, please contact your local Chronicler, Julian Ó Néill, at [email protected] or visit the Kingdom of Calontir’s Chronicler website at: http://www.calontir.org/chronicler/
