She is one of 165 boats participating in this year’s rally. Most of the boats will spend the cruising season exploring the Sea of Cortez and Mexican mainland coastal waters, although some of the more adventurous boats will head across the South Pacific as part of the 2014 Puddle Jump. Our plan is to spend a couple months in La Paz before heading south to Puerto Vallarta and points south.     Jimmy Buffett once said, “everybody’s got a cousin in Miami,” and that may be true, especially for the folks on the east coast. But it’s a safer bet for most of us BCYC members that we are the relative in the postcard town with a cousin or two in the less meteorologically-fortunate areas. We are the ones blessed with beautiful scenery and vistas, perfect weather, an amazing harbor and ocean playground beyond and, of course, a picture-perfect setting for our waterfront clubhouse and endless opportunities for fun and camaraderie with our fellow BCYC members.

    The New Member Seafood Fest this past month is a great example. With the Santa Ana winds blowing, the warm, breezy weather was the perfect backdrop for our Tommy Bahama-themed, seafood dinner-dance welcoming our 2013 class of new members. This year we also recognized our “newer” members from the classes of 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. The turnout was great, with over 80 members in attendance, and Chef Georges Rapicault delivered an amazing array of shrimp, lobster tail, fish and seafood dishes that had everyone smiling wide and piling high. Best of all, from happy hour on the patio with the committees sharing information about their activities, through dinner and right up to the closing dance with Elvis Presley singing, new friendships were formed and a fun and entertaining evening was had by all.

    Summer is gone and the holidays will soon be upon us. But before you give up the whole weekend to football or Netflix, remember, there will soon be shivering people right here in America and some of them may be your very own family and friends. As they begin amassing their snowplows and ice scrapers and driveway salt, remember how fortunate we are. There are adventures awaiting on the water, and plenty of social activities on the BCYC calendar. Come by, bring your family and friends, perhaps even a cousin or two. And if you get a chance, take a minute to say hello to one of our new or newer members.

    It’s A Wrap!The Catalina Island Yacht Club cruise once again served as our final official cruise of 2013. What a great way to end it! Thanks to Abbott and Cindy Ayloush and team for their hard work. The annual golf tournament, for the Konapelsky perpetual trophy, proved to be a hard-fought battle down to the final hole. Michael Bryant claimed the 2013 club golf champion title with a score of 51, followed closely by Bill Parr with 53, Eddie Arnold at 56 and Paul Secard scoring 57. The Poker Run was a huge success, with Debbie Fisher holding the winning hand. Saturday Night was the Oktoberfest at CIYC — “oans, zwoa, drei, gsuffa!”

    I want to also thank all of those throughout the season who chaired a cruise: Jeanie Lowry for our memorable Raft-Up, which turned into a successful and lively Dock-Up; Commodore Tom and Mary Madden whose Avalon Cruise was EPIC; Junior Staff Commodore Karen Winnett’s relaxing Staycation for the long Memorial Weekend; Staff Commodore Don and Jill Bernard’s Isthmus Cruise (you keep making it more fun every year); Bill and Kristy Parr, for the Seal Beach Yacht Club exchange cruise, which was great, especially all of the games (and the Bloody Marys, of course).

    Well, that about rounds it up for the official cruise season, but that does not mean we should stop boating. November is one of the best months to be out on the water here in Southern California. Look at the bulletin board to see if there are any ad-hoc cruises happening!

    My column in last month’s Masthead was titled Construction Coming SOON. It still applies. In the last month, plan corrections finally came out of the Newport Beach building department. The only significant changes involved handicapped access improvements to the showers and swimming pool area. By the time you read this, we should have permits from the city and be waiting to receive revised bids from our contractors. While the delay has been significant, it has given the renovation team time to refine

    some of the fit and finish elements of the design. Club improvements are meant to last a long time, so in the end, it is better not to rush. The outcome will be worth the wait and the construction inconvenience.

    Meanwhile, other areas of the clubhouse have received attention. Some original, unrepairable windows in the employee break room have been replaced, and replacing one of the original dining room air conditioners is underway. Also, a member has asked for more Internet bandwidth to improve TV program streaming in the marina. We are working to gauge how much demand exists for this type of service. If you have any thoughts about this, please email them to me, or mention to any officer or House Committee member.

    The next committee meeting will be Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Interested members are encouraged to attend.

    Did you know that at the first Thanksgiving dinner in 1621, there were no potatoes on the menu? The reason was because Irish immigrants had not yet brought them to North America.

    Thanksgiving was usually celebrated in late September or October, but in 1941, Congress made Thanksgiving a national holiday and set the date as the fourth Thursday in November. Good they didn’t set it on the second Sunday of November, because that’s the start of our Hot Rum Series.

    The Hot Rum Series is the best introduction to racing in the harbor, with no spinnakers or tricky maneuvers required. Just sail your boat up the channel and back to the start/finish line, and maybe win a prize. After racing, come back to the club and enjoy a Dark and Stormy, the series signature drink. If you miss the first race, do the next one. Sign up online!

    This is also the time of year I start the planning process for races in 2014. If you want a certain kind of race added to the calendar, let me know. If you have some comments about our current races or race series, let me know. If you want to join Race Committee for 2014, let me know.

    Many thanks to the group of volunteers who were the BCYC 2013 Race Committee. With 48 race days on the calendar and usually three classes racing each time (sometimes five), that translates to at least 144 starting sequences — lots of flag waving, lots of horns, lots of fun and lots of food. Turkey sandwich, anyone?

    No Potatoes

    To maximize your velocity made good (VMG), sail to windward. When you pull the Cunningham, the draft in the main moves farther forward. When you pull harder on the Cunningham, it makes the mainsail flatter overall. A good basic setting is to trim your main so the top batten is parallel to the boom. When you ease the outhaul, this closes the lower leech, which increases windward helm.

    Fall has kicked off its journey and with it comes one of the best times of the year for the sport of sailing. With this new season, the mild California climate makes racing all day out on the water enjoyable for all. Temperatures are still nice, yet sunburns and sluggishness can be put to rest for the most part. BCYC junior sailors have always had a good flow of sailors moving into high school sailing in this autumn season, and this year is nothing short of a BCYC sailing frenzy.

    For the Corona del Mar sailing team, several sailors, including Jordan Black, Ashton Brown, Jack Donnell, Ainsley Henderson, Alex Ivory, Derrick Pickell, Ian and Jordan Sellinger, and Cameron Wood earned spots on the varsity and junior varsity teams. At Mater Dei, Caden Wheeler represents the club as a freshman, and the Sage team includes junior board members Connor Chung and Madison Nadelman.

    High school sailing promotes friendly rivalries between schools, similar to that of junior sailors representing their yacht club. Teams spend a lot of time together at practices and weekend regattas, and an interesting aspect of high school sailing is our chance to bond, especially during team racing. In team racing, each and every sailor’s reliance on and support of their team members proves essential for any success their school hopes to achieve.

    Overall, whether team or match racing, BCYC sailors have already shown their commitment to the sport of sailing in their respective high schools. And much like the fall season, our sailors have begun the school year strong and positive for everyone who meets them on the water.

    We are now fully immersed in the fall sailing season. If you thought the junior racing season was over after the summer, you have not experienced the best events on the Southern California racing calendar. Our BCYC racing team has been busy, participating in the Fall Gold Cup at Newport Harbor Yacht Club, the Fall Invitational at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, Opti West Coast Champions, CFJ Shadden Series and preparing for the eighth Annual BCYC Corinthian Cup Regatta Oct. 26 and 27. The team will continue racing right up to Thanksgiving.

    Look for us out on the water on Friday and Sunday afternoons. We have upped our practice schedule significantly to get more time on the water, helping our young racers be better prepared for each regatta. I’m so proud of both the commitment and passion towards sailing I’ve witnessed from each sailor this season. As in any sport, the key to success is preparation, and our BCYC juniors are willing to do whatever it takes to hone their knowledge and racing skills, on the water and in the classroom. It is a fantastic way to introduce both friends and family to the sport of sailing.     It is hard to believe that 2013 is almost over. Please plan to attend the BCYC annual Awards Night on Saturday, Nov. 16. We will be honoring many very deserving club members for their excellent contributions and outstanding service to the club, as well as their terrific racing results this year. Included will be a host of awards for our hardworking and talented juniors. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy a delicious dinner created by Chef Georges Rapicault and his culinary team. This is a member event and a great way to start off the holiday season with fine food and good friends. The New Member Seafood Fest honoring new members was Oct. 5. It was a very well attended event combining a seafood buffet with recognition of our club’s new members. The party started on the patio on a beautiful and warm night with tray-passed appetizers.     A gentle reminder to our members, especially our newer members, that there are several committees at the club open to the general membership, in particular, Activities, Membership, Cruise, House, Angling, Food and Beverage, and Junior Events. The success of these committees, while often falling on the shoulders of a few, thrives with fresh input and new faces. While the saying goes, “many hands make light work,” experience shows being involved is a recipe for fun. 2014 will be upon us soon, and our committee chairs welcome all to participate and see what each committee has on deck this coming year that might be of interest to you.

We are always looking to get more members involved and with 2014 fast approaching, it is a great time to join a committee. Thanks to the hard work of the committee and staff, 2013 has been great for the Ship’s Store. Many new items and styles have been introduced and the results have been terrific. Ship’s Store sales are up over 50 percent compared to 2012!

    Ahoy. Winter is here, bringing with it those potentially devastating storms. Your boat needs your attention now, to protect it and the dock or mooring where it resides.

    Please check all lines, whether at a dock or on a mooring. If any fraying is evident, replace now because they will break! Any dock damage is your responsibility and can become expensive.

    Check all your canvas for loose or broken fasteners, fraying or tears – you could lose your canvas in high winds. Check all bilge pumps. Are your batteries okay? The bilge pump is dependent on them to operate.

    For those in dry storage, many of the same things apply – no bathtubs please! Please make sure your trailer tires are inflated.

    Doing these checks now could save your boat from sinking, a problem that happens every year in Southern California. For those of you with boats in the BCYC marina or dry storage, let Susie Brodrick in the front office know you have been onboard and checked your vessel. Your boat is your responsibility!

    Billfish Tourney

    The competition looked tough. Sport fishing boats were rigged to the hilt with everything from mean Joe Greens, electronic lures and jigs, to daisy chain teasers. All were scrambling to catch billfish along the Southern California coast, including hitting some of the typical hot spots: 43, 152, 208, 277 and 289 (well-known high ridges or pinnacles rising from the ocean floor).

    The 20th annual billfish invitational tournament, sponsored by Catalina Island Yacht Club, took place Sept. 5-7. Nineteen sport fishers participated in the tournament, hitting all the typical hot fishing spots. The team aboard sport fisher Wild Thing was the fortunate winner of the tournament. Catching the only qualified billfish earned owner Jim Wachtler and his crew first prize. There was another fish caught, but the owner claimed he did not have a camera on board to prove his catch – what a fish story! Tom Thacker, aboard Casa Del Mare, caught a yellowtail and was rewarded with a gift certificate good for 100 gallons of diesel fuel donated by Jim Hill. This helped offset a fraction of his total fuel bill. BCYC members Bill Allison, Jim Buchanan, Kip Cyprus, Tom Murphy and Barry O’Neill participated in the tournament.

    By popular demand, the dates for the 2014 fishing expedition to The Lodge at Englefield Bay in British Columbia have been set. This amazing trip will take place Aug. 2-7. Early reservations, typically before February 2014, will guarantee a 4% discount off standard pricing.

    Help kick off the “Toys for Marine Children” drive at the Las Commodoras luncheon Nov. 21, and receive one raffle ticket per toy you bring to the luncheon. The raffle grand prize is a holiday gift basket worth $100. Toys needs to be new, in their original packaging and unwrapped. Toys are welcome for all age levels, including teenagers. Gift cards are acceptable and encouraged for the older children.

    We will also have a cookie exchange at the luncheon. To participate, bring two dozen cookies to exchange and one dozen for dessert for all to share.     Las Commodoras will host Holiday Mania Dec. 5! This is a new format for our holiday auction and will surely prove to be very entertaining and exciting. The Las Commodoras Board of Directors are chairing this luncheon and they guarantee a good time. You have to attend to believe it! Proceeds from this event will go towards providing a track wheelchair for a disabled Marine who is a member of the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion.

    A very fun group of BCYC elves is gathering Nov. 23-25 to transform the club into a holiday wonderland. Please join us, if only for an hour or two.
