Late in November, the Holiday Design Team will be looking for volunteers again to help decorate for the holiday season. Please consider spending a few hours assisting in making the club look fantastic again this year! Many hands make for light work.
In closing, I am very happy to report that the Executive Committee and General Manager Scott Jones have executed a multi-year extension of Scott’s current employment agreement. Scott has done an excellent job in the three-plus years he has been the general manager. Please join me in congratulating Scott and wishing him much continued success at BCYC!It is 90 degrees as I sit in shorts and write this article. It is hard
to believe that Thanksgiving is fast approaching! I think we may have to keep the club pool open through Thanksgiving weekend this year.
November is going to be another busy month at BCYC. Our annual Awards Night takes place Nov. 7. This is the night we recognize the members who make our club a special place. We will honor contributions to all facets of the club, from representing the club by racing throughout Southern California and around the worls, to putting on all the great events at BCYC. Please join us in honoring these special members.
We will have a new event at the club this month — the U.S. Gondola Nationals, which will take place in the harbor near BCYC, Nov. 14 and 15. There will be races in several different classes, including sprint and distance racing. I understand that Saturday night will feature an a cappella singing event as part of the activities. Gondola rides will be available for the membership during the weekend. Look for additional information on this a fun event.

Sailing And Sibling
One month ago, my sister joined me in the BCYC Fall Sail-ing Program. I was a little nervous because she had never been in a CFJ before. Actually, when we adopted Sara from India two years ago, she had never seen the ocean.
I never saw my sister at work in a stressful environment and she definitely rose to the occasion. She knew nothing about sailing terminology, technique, rules and strategy – Coach Matt Harper explained complex topics in a way that benefited everyone, including a beginner; an amazing abil-ity. With his hands-on coaching style and some advice from me, Sara quickly became a great crew member. In addition to the sailing part, being in the boat together has been a really good way to learn more about, and from, my sister. Sailing is a great sport to see how someone’s brain works. My sister is organized, always thinking ahead, while I tend to be more intuitive and decisive. We make a good team.
The other kids in the program welcomed her with smiles and friendship. Many in the program have been sailing since they were five years old, just like me, but they didn’t look down on someone who just started sailing. Instead, they offered words of advice and encouragement. Sara is afraid of capsizing, but we’ve managed to avoid that so far.
Every Friday afternoon, we both look forward to the end of the school week and a few hours of fun together in our CFJ. We relax, work hard, play and laugh. In the future, I hope we can start racing together. I don’t know of any other sport that could bring two new siblings together, with such different skills, in such a nice environment. - Dillon Graveline, Junior Rear Commodore -
If I have learned anything from my responsibilities of monitoring the land-based committees, it is that our volunteers are the lifeblood of BCYC. They are the ones who oversaw our major renovation and addition of the elevator, and organized, planned and decorated for the many events that the club hosted during the year. They helped our membership grow. Without our energetic volunteers we would not be known as the “friendliest club, most active club on the bay.”
There are several committees and one organization dedicated to making all this happen: our House Committee is charged with the responsibility of maintaining our building and surrounding grounds; the Activities Committee plans and oversees many events throughout the year; the Membership Committee is so vital in implementing programs to attract new members to the club; the Food and Beverage Committee works to assure our dining experience is best in class; and finally, our Las Commodoras auxiliary is involved in a myriad of activities that include both social and philanthropic endeavors.
During the year, many of you have come to me with some great ideas on how to improve the club. There is no better way than to become involved and participate in any one or more of these committees where you can be heard and be part of the vitality of BCYC.
Our club is run by our members and we are so fortunate to have such a competent staff led by General Manager Scott Jones to assure everything operates smoothly. But nothing happens without our membership involvement so: volunteer, volunteer, please!

The lifeblood of every yacht club is its membership. In early October, I had the great honor of attending BCYC’s New Member Party and Ribbon Cutting ceremony. There were lots of laughs, and many awesome selfies taken, thanks to Director JR Means and my Dad, George Hampton! In addition to meeting new members, my sister, Abby, and I had the opportunity to take one of the first rides on our new elevator, with Newport Beach Mayor, Ed Selich. Our new elevator is an important addition to the club, because it affords greater access to all members. Being at the party with my family and friends allowed me to see BCYC at its best – old members and new, young and old, power and sail boaters, all coming together. I am excited for the future of the club and hope that we attract more new Junior members who reflect the special vitality and friendliness of BCYC!
Welcome, New Members!

BCYC hosted the 10th Annual Corinthian Cup Regatta Oct. 17-18. This regatta is unique in that sailors are competing for the Team High Point Perpetual Trophy, in addition to individual low point awards within each class. The Team High Point combines participation, as well as performance to determine an overall winning yacht club. Each registered Newport-area sailor receives one point toward their yacht club team score, while travel teams receive double points per registered sailor. Additionally, top five finishers in each class are awarded points based on their ranking along with their participation points.
Great conditions made for awesome racing with heavy air on Saturday and light breeze on Sunday. This year we had a record number of entries, making it the most successful Corinthian Cup Regatta ever! Special congratulations are due Cameron Wood and Danielle Ahir for taking first in the CFJ class. I am proud to announce that BCYC has taken back the Corinthian Cup perpetual trophy as the 2015 high point champions, ending the six year winning streak of Newport Harbor Yacht Club! This was made possible by 11 of our sailors finishing inside the top five and 30 BCYC sailors competing in this regatta. In contrast with other local clubs, there were: NHYC-19, BYC-16, LIYC-11. Long Beach, Dana Point and Mission Viejo yacht clubs also sent sailors to compete. I would like to thank all of our dedicated volunteers for their support in making this regatta possible, particularly Regatta Chairman Derek Johansson and his wife, Ramsey. Please visit the BCYC Juniors homepage for complete results.

Celebrate AND Decorate
ActivitiesKari Konapelsky/Lauri [email protected]@gmail.com
The New Member celebration Oct. 3 was a great success! It was so good to meet the new members and we want to encourage each of you to get involved with a committee of your choice. Activities Committee is a great place to meet new friends and get involved with planning fun events. Our meetings are the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Please join us at our next meeting, Nov. 11.
Next up is our Annual Awards Night, Nov. 7. This is a cool event where we get to honor our outstanding members and give them the recognition they so deserve. Please mark your calendars and make reservations early.
Calling all elves to be part of our holiday design team. We need many volunteers to help us turn BCYC into a winter wonderland – this decorating fun will be Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21 and 22. On Saturday, we really need some men to help with the larger items and lights. Come down and give us a hand for a couple of hours and we will get you in the holiday spirit!
This time of year you would think that things around BCYC would slow down. However, the weather may be cooler, but the pace at the club is very active.
As members of BCYC, we are part of a very wonderful organization. We have a superb facility that has been greatly improved by our recent renovation and the addition of the elevator. We have a very active, friendly membership that creates events that help make the club fun and exciting. We also have a group of excellent sailboat racers, both adult and juniors, who add to BCYC’s reputation in the yachting community.
All of the events, cruises, activities and racing successes are the result of the volunteer efforts of dedicated members. We have Awards Night, Nov. 7, to honor and thank the many volunteers who contribute so much. I hope you will be there to show your appreciation and support to these members who spent so many hours making BCYC what it is. Being part of this event, particularly for newer members, will give you a good perspective of what BCYC is all about and help you to put names to the many faces you see around the club.

A Season for Giving
Las Commodoras is proud to run a toy drive for the Marine families at Camp Pendleton, which we will KICK OFF at Prime Rib Night, Nov. 5. Bring an unwrapped new toy and receive a complimentary glass of house wine with your prime rib dinner! The Marines have specified a real need for SPORTING EQUIPMENT. Let’s get those kids outside with balls, bats, mitts, skateboards and tennis racquets. Cash or gift cards to sporting goods stores would be much appreciated and we will shop for you! Thank you so much to our wonderful membership for being so generous.
OKTOBERFEST celebration was so much fun! Thank you, Michael Bryant and Tim Whelan, the Aged to Perfection duo, for your entertainment – we all enjoyed “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in German! Thanks to Rick Watchinski for performing “Edelweiss” at this very fun event.
SAUCES IMPOSSIBLE cooking class and luncheon with Chef Georges Rapicault was a wonderful and educational event. Sauces are POSSIBLE!

It’s time to hoist sails and participate in the Hot Rum Series! Captain Ron is looking for a few ample-bodied skippers and crew to help steer BCYC sailboats around Newport Harbor. The first voyage takes place Nov. 15, with subsequent voyages in December and January. No experience? Don’t have a spinnaker? Perfect! Just sign up and then show up. The password is “fun.”
Did you know that BCYC races are open to everyone? Do you have friends with a sailboat? Invite them to participate. Need crew for your sailboat? A hint…there are some really experienced names on the website Crew List. Does the word “advantage” interest you?
The so-called winter months provide an opportunity for wannabe racers to learn the ropes (pun intended). Easy sailing in the Hot Rum Series, some practice start sessions, and the Introduction to Sailboat Racing seminar are all intended to prepare you for more serious racing. What’s that practice start thing? Race Committee will set up a start line and run practice starts for skippers who want to learn how to start a race, or just want to improve their starting skills. Ask me for more details.
As the leaves fall and snow flurries appear someplace other than Southern California, it’s time to be thankful for a fun year of racing. PHRF and Harbor 20 races were well attended and racers were pleased with our venues. We’ll keep doing it.
Finally, remember to eat your veggies on Thanksgiving. My favorites are carrot cake, zucchini bread and pumpkin pie!

A Note from our Chaplain . . .“Life is amazing. And then it is awful. And then it is amazing again. And in between the amazing and the awful it’s ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That’s just living heartbreaking, soul-healing, amazing, awful, ordinary life. And it’s breaththakingly beautiful.”

Angling
The largest blue marlin ever reeled in off the California coast was caught by Alfonse Hamann, in 1931, weighing in at 692 pounds. The one pictured here, weighing in at 662 pounds, was hooked by Matt Santora on Sept. 23 off a 21-foot Wellcraft center console boat, nine miles from Point Loma. This was the second blue marlin caught in the past two years, showing just how spectacular fishing has been.
It’s back or is it? Although we have had a fabulous fishing season, with good could come bad. Meteorologists aren’t in agreement as to whether we are heading for a season ahead to rival that of the winter of 1997-1998, but signs are pointing to the return of El Nino – the formal name is El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) which comes from the Spanish name for “the little boy”, referring to the Christ child. The reason is that it normally happens around Christmas, usually in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of South America, where it was named. Generally, it is caused by above average sea surface temperatures and atmospheric conditions that change the places where storms go. El Nino’s bad boy reputation comes not from extra storminess, but from the fact that it brings storms to places that can’t handle them so well, like Southern California, where we experience drenching rains, mud slides and an occasional tornado due to this weather phenomenon.
DID YOU KNOW ? Important Stuff
Did you know that, thanks to the efforts of our marina tenants, water usage in the marina was down compared to 2014 for the summer months?
Did you know that, with the warmer weather, the club swimming pool is still a great place to spend a late afternoon at the club?
Did you know that the new elevator enables us to offer member dining on the top floor more often?
