If you are like most people, you are resolving to make some type of improvement to your health in 2014. If you are reading this, chances are you have joined the BAC, and already have invested some resources into your health. Good for you! Our facility is one of the best in Michigan, and offers many options for a great workout, regardless of your fitness level. Unfortunately, some members don’t have any idea about what type of exercises they should be doing. They wander around the gym aimlessly, trying to figure out what to do. When they don’t get the results they want (or feel uncomfortable trying) they just stop coming. Don’t be this member! If you have come this far (in that you have made the membership commitment, and make the effort to get to the club consistently), consider hiring one of the BAC personal trainers for a fitness plan. We can develop a program that is customized just for you. It is a lot easier to have a tailored workout “to-do” list once you get here, rather than trying to come up with one on your own, which may be ineffective (or even unsafe). In the long run, the time and money you invest with a trainer will be better spent than an unused membership and lots of unworn workout clothes! Jennifer Anderson—Service Desk Many things have changed since we last featured Jennifer Anderson as our MVP. In 2006 she was newly married to husband Matt and working in the BAC Membership Office.

Today the two are raising three busy children: McKenna, 5, Hailey, 3, and Mason, 2. She’s

working at the BAC Service Desk now, but Jennifer’s sweet, encouraging attitude is just the same.

Jen has worked in many facets of the club, including serving as supervisor of the locker rooms and the youth center. She left the BAC

for another job, but when her third child was born, Jen decided to reconnect with the club. “I was pleasantly surprised (when I came back) to see so many familiar faces of both members and employees.” She says she loves the energy and positivity at the BAC, and especially enjoys the conversations and relating to people. “I think the Service Desk is so unique because you really get to know members. They come in to work out at the same time every day. ”

While she doesn’t have as much time to exercise as she did pre-kids, Jen says she tries to make healthy food choices, and looks forward to trying a few group exercise classes. “My husband works out and runs 5Ks. I want to get back into it.” Their favorite family activities are movie night at home and swimming day at the BAC. “We love to go as a family to the club and swim,” she explains. “Working at the Service Desk allows me a good balance between work and home. I like being able to help people.” •

Meet Tim ScheffersTim Scheffers ran his fifth marathon in September, traveling many miles just to the starting line—Tim and his wife, Leslie, completed the event in Germany. “The Berlin Marathon brought together people from all different walks of life and countries,” he explains. “People are speaking all different languages around you. We’re from all over theworld, but there is a bond there,” Tim says.“I started running six years ago ... Leslie kindof coached me into trying a 5K. Then I dida 10K. As you do these races, you want togo a little farther and a little farther. I movedall the way up to running an ultra (34 miles),and completed 15 half marathons and five(full) marathons. ”

Tim says that combining travel and racingis something that he and Leslie do together.“I really enjoy doing the destination races.”

As a busy co-owner of OIK Industries, aKalamazoo company that supplies high-endarchitectural metal fabrications, Tim makes the time to exercise. “Our kids are pretty much grown,” he says. “We’ve found the time now to do this. There are so many benefits. You feel good about yourself. Your outlook on life is improved. You can turn a stressful day into a good day. When you exercise, you recharge.” The BAC fits well with Tim’s routine. “I’m (here) three to four times a week for Spinning® classes, weight training and other things. I’ve enjoyed the people running the different classes,” he says. “I’ve taken everything from swim lessons to yoga to kettlebell classes.” Tim has kept up his healthy habit despite setbacks. “You can’t stop,” he says. “I’ve had multiple shoulder surgeries, and a lung biopsy last April. When this was all going on, my recovery had so much to do with Bronson. The things I could do, like Spinning® and different machines to protect the injury, really helped me to get back to the activity level I enjoyed before surgery.” He concludes, “If you would have asked me 10 years ago if I’d be running, I would have said ‘I’m not built to run.’ Now I consider myself a runner.” •

Club Courtesy Please resolve to be kind to your fellow BAC members this year by observing these guidelines:• Please don’t wear excessive perfume or cologne when

exercising. We have had several complaints about strong scents (and we don’t mean sweat) on the fitness floor.

• Please clean your boots before tracking in the locker rooms, and only wear clean, dry shoes upstairs.

• Please observe court signs for regularly scheduled activities. These times are posted near the gym.

• Finally, it’s crowded upstairs, so please follow the 30-minute rule when using equipment if someone is waiting to jump on. You could be the one waiting next time. Thanks for being a conscientious member!

Donate Blood, Get a PassEveryone who donates blood Friday, Jan. 17, (note new day) from 2–5 p.m. at the club will receive a FREE guest pass. This is the perfect opportunity to do good, give back and invite a friend to join you at the gym. You also will be entered into a drawing for a free 5-day VIP pass. Visit https://donate.miblood.org to schedule your donation and reserve your time slot, or drop in anytime during drive hours.
