Signs Dallas and Albuquerque with Comcast; Cocola Signs Fresno Una Vez Más, the largest AzA affiliate group, has signed carriage agree- ments with Comcast Cable for Dallas and Albuquerque. The KODF-TV Channel 26 station in Dallas will be carried on Comcast’s channel 21, while the KQDF-TV Channel 25 sta- tion in Albuquerque will be carried on Comcast’s channel 17. The agree- ment will be effective Jan. 1, 2005. Also on Comcast is a carriage agree- ment with Cocola Broadcasting to carry Azteca America in Fresno, Clovis, Madera, Los Banos, Mendota, Merced, Reedley and Visalia on its channel 77. Cocola’s over-the-air sta- tions in California are KMSG-TV 55 in Fresno, and KPMC-TV 42 in Bakersfield. The agreement is effec- tive Dec. 15, 2004. Our Commitment As we come to the end of the year and the holiday season, it’s a good time to reflect on our values. At Azteca America we are committed to doing good business, but we are also dedicated to improving the quality of life for the communities we serve through education in both the United States and Mexico. Our parent organization Grupo Salinas, through its non-profit arm Fundación Azteca, has held an impressive series of educational events in recent months. Entries will be closing in mid January for an essay contest enti- tled Caminos a la Libertad. This is an international competition (work must be unpublished and written in Spanish) on the topic of "Free- dom," with a jury of world-renown scholars and cash prizes of US$15,000, US$10,000 and US$ 5,000. So get your pens moving if there is a latent writer in you. In late November Grupo Salinas announced the funding of four Fulbright scholarships with local partner Comexus. The scholarships are open to Mexicans interested in studying masters’ degrees in the US that could benefit education in Mexico. We were pleased to have US Ambassador to Mexico Tony Garza with us to make the announcement. AzA Shows Strongat HispanicTelevision Summitin New York

Azteca America made a strongpresence this year at the HispanicTelevision Summit in New York ear-lier this month. The AzA sponsorpackage included full page ads insponsoring publications of Broad-casting & Cable and Multi-channelNews, and was present in a “NewProgramming” panel.

The event was a good opportunityto cement relations with the trademedia, as well as meet with indus-try marketing, promotions, cable,programming and media buyingmembers.

In his panel presentation, COOJorge Jaidar stressed the vast pro-duction capacity of Azteca Americathrough the 8,000 hours of TVAzteca content and 1,000 hours of

programming geared specificallytoward US viewers.

He said that while novelas continueto be the bread and butter of thenetwork, we are seeing promisingsuccess with soccer, single-episodeshows like Lo Que Callamos LasMujeres, La Vida Es Una Canción,

game shows like Cante & Gane,and of course La Academia, where

he added that we would have ourfourth generation in March andthen La Academia USA later in theyear.

Inaugurated as “Repensandoel Futuro de México,” the aim ofthe forum is to create viable pro-posals and sustainable advances ineconomics, business, culture andpublic policy, as well as a bridge ofunderstanding between Mexico andthe United States.

The event was attended by Boalt HallDean Christopher Edley, Center forLatin American Studies DirectorHarley Shaiken, and noted Mexicanintellectuals Sabina Berman andJorge Volpi. The seminar will be co-hosted by Grupo Salinas members,who will be responsible for the selec-tion and expenses of the Mexicanguest speakers.

Grupo Salinas through the Fundaciónalso supports a technical grade schoolcalled Plantel Azteca, which is thehighest-rated institution of its kind inMexico for three years running. Fullscholarships are given to 2,500 lowincome students every year.

These are all great programs, andwe’re very excited to announcethat Fundación Azteca will be offi-cially launching in the US next year.It’s just one way of us spreadingour commitment.

The strategy of running an AztecaAmerica affiliate alongside anestablished Anglo sister station isone that is gaining acceptance forsome of our affiliates. In the case ofPalm Springs, Desert Television, aproperty owned by the Houstonfamily, has a CBS affiliate alongsideAzteca 19.

The advantage is being able to poolinfrastructure especially for localnews coverage. In the case of PalmSprings, Ernesto adds that theAzteca America station can alsotake advantage of the sales staffand infrastructure of the CBS sisterstation.

Administration of both the AztecaAmerica and CBS stations areunder the responsibility of general

manger Bill Evans. MeanwhileErnesto does a little of everythingfrom anchoring the local newsbreaks, along with Juliana Do-minguez, to sales, production andpublic relations.

His background is in comedy andnews production at Televisa inMexico City. Later from PalmSprings, he produced commerciallyas well as anchoring and producinglocal news for Univision, in additionto sales work with the localTelemundo affiliate.

Creative marketing has been thekey for Palm Springs. Given that thestation does not have a radio sisterstation like its Telemundo andUnivision counterparts, Sales man-ager Jonas Udcofff has developedCupones Azteca as an extra forclients with special offers sent to40,000 households every fourmonths.

While the station continues to ana-lyze whether to go to a full 30-minute news block or not, PalmSprings produces 2 minute newsbreaks every hour from 2pm to 11pm called Hechos del Valle.

Key for the community are also twoannual fairs: The Festival del Tamalor Tamale Festival and the DateFestival. The former is held duringthe first weekend for December

and the latter for the last twoweeks of February in the neighbor-ing town of Indio. Ernesto esti-mates the attendance of theTamale event to be about 200,000,with the Date Festival attracting500,000 visitors. Last year the sta-tion scooped their competitionwith live hourly updates from thefair, a participation they hope torepeat for next year. In the DateFestival the station will be partici-pating in the parade and is lookingto bring Azteca talent in as well.

The Pumas ofUNAM made short-tournament historythis month alterdefeating Monterrey by a 3-1 marginin two matches. Although neither ofthe final games was consideredthrilling play, the Pumas became thefirst team to win two consecutivetitles since the current short-seasontournaments began in 1996.

As for preparations for the 2005Closing (Clausura) Season, one ofthe biggest events has been the hir-ing of Ricardo “Tuca” Ferreti as thenew coach of Monarcas Morelia.Tuca took Toluca to the playoffs inthe last season and promises to doat least the same for the strugglingMorelia team. The Ecuadorian for-ward Johnny Baldeón is also inadvanced talks with MonarcasMorelia.

Good news for Cruz Azul is thearrival of Rubén Omar Romano ashead coach. However, the news iscountered by the exit of the Olympicmedalist forwards from ArgentinaLuciano Figueroa, another playerfrom Argentina Marcelo “Chelo”Delgado, as well as the Mexicanplayers Cesáreo Victorino and EmilioMora. Ruben Omar said his first goalis to strengthen the team’s offenseand mid-field players.

Pachuca, who will be participating inthe Copa Libertadores under the lead-ership of Alfredo Tena, has the addi-

tion of the Mexican striker JaredBorgetti and are on the verge of sign-ing the Argentine Marcelo Delgado.

Tecos have signed the Uruguayanforward Carlos María Morales withhopes of improving their record.The team finished last overall in thepast tournament with four wins,nine losses and four ties.

Also looking to move out of a losingstreak are the Dorados of Sinaloa,who have contracted two Brazilianplayers, one Argentine and oneColombian –reaching the maximumlimit of five foreign players on theirroster as they look to avoid slidingback to the minor leagues.

• Mexican League is divided intotwo tournaments: the OpeningTournament (Apertura), whichbegins in August and ends inDecember, and the ClosingTournament (Clausura), whichbegins in January and traditionallyends in June.• A game is 90 minutes long withone intermission of 15 minutes.There are no scheduled time outs.Advertising opportunities includespots, crawls, superimposed graph-ics, product placement and spon-sorships.

• There are 18 teams in the league.Transmission rights are negotiatedfor home matches. Azteca Americahas rights for the following eightteams:1. • Every year, teams are dividedthrough a drawing into threegroups• The top two teams of each groupand the strongest two third placesof each group advance to the play-offs, known as the Liguilla.• The eight teams qualified for theLiguilla begin with a home and anvisitor match for the first round.The first game is known as the ida(outgoing) and the second is thevuelta (returning) match. The rank-ing teams traditionally opt to playthe vuelta match at home.• In the event of a tie during eitherof the first two rounds, the highestranking team of the regular seasonadvances.• For the final, in the event of a tieafter the end of the regular 90minute match, an additional two15 minute periods are added. If thetie is still unbroken, the teams go to“penalties,” where each teamselects five players to shoot at theopposing goalie from a given dis-tance. Lo Que Callamos Las Mujeres, a sin-gle-episode dramatic series thatfocuses on conflicts facing modernLatina women, jumped 100% innetwork audience share whencomparing the first half of this yearwith the second half, according toNielsen NHTI data.

“There’s no doubt that Lo QueCallamos is quality and entertainingprogramming that our audience canlearn from, “said Azteca AmericaCOO Jorge Jaidar. “Its great to see thisreflected in the popularity of theshow.”

Also making large ratings increasesduring the second half was theafternoon transmission (1 pm) ofour entertainment news and gossipshow Ventaneando with PatiChapoy, which increased 50% dur-ing the same period.

Names & FacesLaura y “ElJarocho”Hosts of Cante & Gane

The success of our musical talentcontest Cante & Gane was one ofimmediate acceptance. Nonethe-less, as we review the experience ofboth hosts it is no wonder.

El Jarocho, his given name is JavierHernández, was born in Tamiahua,Veracruz and has been a Californiaresident since 1982. He got his startin the entertainment business withappearances on Televisa novelasand children’s shows in Mexico City.

After working as an MC andsinging in grupera bands, he start-ed hosting a musical program on alocal LA television station in 1993,and continued with several othershows. He has been with AztecaAmerica through Cante & Ganesince the show’s launch earlier thisyear.

Laura, whose full name is LauraIsabel Aro Beltrán, is a native ofTijuana and demonstrated musicaltalent from an early age. Sherecorded commercials as an adoles-cent and has studies in electronicengineering. Her big break came asa contestant of La Academia.Following her exit from the show,she moved to LA and hosted sever-al shows before arriving at Cante &Gane.

TV Azteca Headsto Madrid

As of Nov. 16, shares of our parentcompany TV Azteca can be pur-chased directly on the Latibexexchange of the Bolsa de Madridunder the ticker XTZA. The initialday of trading was smooth, withthe stock opening at 5.00 eurosand closing at 5.01 euros.

TV Azteca’s sister Grupo Salinascompany Grupo Elektra also begantrading on Nov. 16.

There are currently seven Mexicancompanies out a total of 34 LatinAmerican firms traded in Madridthrough Latibex.

McGraw-HillJoins the AzAFamily

Media conglomerate McGraw-Hillannounced earlier this month theacquisition of KCIN Channel 27,that has been affiliated to our net-work citing Azteca America’s strongprogramming and the growthprospects of the Hispanic market asthe reason for their decision.

Also in the plans for McGraw Hill arethe affiliations of additional McGraw-Hill stations in Fort Collins (Channel36) and Colorado Springs (Channel

36) in January. On cable the stationswill be carried on Comcast’s channel51. Welcome McGraw-Hill !!!
