Introduction to AVU

•  A Pan African Intergovernmental Organization •  Established by charter with the mandate of significantly

increasing access to quality higher education and training through the innovative use of information communication technologies

•  AVU signed a MOU with African Union Commission in 2012

•  Adopted Open Distance and eLearing in 2003 •  Established in 1997 as a project •  Acquired largest eLearning network in Africa - 53

partners in 27 countries •  Trained + 43, 000 •  Working beyond technological, language and cultural

barriers in Francophone, Anglophone and Lusophone Africa

Access to HE in sub-Saharan Africa

•  4% have access to HE •  Young population, majority under 20 •  Paradox: HE institutions not able to

enroll all first year •  Solution: expand universities? New

institutions? But not enough resources! •  We believe that open, distance and

eLearning is an alternative •  OERs can be part of the solution
