See our district improvement is 0.2%

If we added up all the differences in percentages, we would get:-7.1%

    That's NEGATIVE -7.1%

See why we just can't add up percents? It's totally bogus data.

If every school improved by one percentage point, we would show

the school district as adding 111%, which would

mean 94.0% jumped to 205.0% attendance!!!

BackgroundOn April 22, 2002, the AISD Board of Trustees directed the Superintendent, Dr. Pat Forgione, to develop a plan to address chronically low performing and underachieving schools beginning with the 2002 2003 school year.

Blueprint Progress: State AssessmentsSince the Spring 2003 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) testing is the first of its kind and represents a transition year in which there will be no state ratings, it is difficult in the first year of Blueprint implementation to measure progress in terms of student performance on the TAKS. Student performance on the first-ever, TAKS tests gives the Blueprint Schools a good place to start in strengthening instruction and implementing a rigorous new curriculum. This first year is a benchmark year from which we can measure progress in future years. However, when the 2003 TAKS data are examined relative to the 2002 TAAS standards, all of the Blueprint Schools show marked improvement in all areas. All Blueprint schools demonstrated gains, when comparing TAAS 2002 to TAKS 2003, based on TAAS TLI = 70 Equivalents for Reading and Math (English).

AttendanceOne of the most important factors in student success is regular attendance at school. During the 2002-03 school year there was an average Blueprint School attendance gain of 5.2% over the previous year. Every Blueprint School showed an improvement in attendance.SurveysThe Office of Program Evaluation (OPE) conducts an AISD parent survey each year. In addition, as part of the evaluation of the Blueprint project, OPE has administered The Organizational Health Inventory for Elementary and Middle Schools (for school staff), and the Survey of Student Perceptions of Effective Schools Correlates. Parents: On a comparison of the responses from the Parent Survey for the Blueprint Schools and the district as a whole, the Blueprint Schools, especially the elementary schools, fare very favorably. The percentage of responses indicating Agree or Strongly Agree were, in most cases, in the high 80% to high 90% range. Challenges (continued)Putting consistent systems and procedures in placeUsing data to drive instructional decisionsProviding a challenging and rigorous academic curriculumDeveloping capacity of instructional staffLessons LearnedStart early in planning for reconstituting schools. Because the project was begun late in the year, there were few unassigned experienced teachers, especially at the middle school level. When planning for reconstituting schools, allow ample time for team building and bonding. Trust is built up only over time.

Next Steps: 2003-04Pearce and Dobie become part of Middle School structure under Dr. Gordon2003 - 2004 is a transition year as they become active participants in their horizontal and vertical teams The two middle school principals will collaborate with their colleagues to share Blueprint best practices and address future challengesSix elementary Focus Schools will be supported by the Blueprint InitiativeThe second stage of the Blueprint initiative will investigate and demonstrate how the Blueprint model can be implemented without additional funding resources.
