The healthcare sector faces a difficult challenge. It must allow

visitors and employees a large degree of freedom of access,

while at the same time protecting sensitive areas from

unauthorised entry. Located in the heart of communities, the

buildings can become the subject of unwanted attention

when unattended. Given the potential for opportunist crime

throughout what are often large sites and buildings, even

areas of low sensitivity may require a high standard of

protection, particularly as security staffing levels are often

low.

Crime in England and WalesStatistics from the British Crime Survey (BCS)show that the majority of crime for the UK isproperty related.

Vandalism accounts for 27% of all BCS crime(two-thirds of which is vehicle vandalism) andcriminal damage accounts for one in five (21%) of crimes recorded by the police.

The chart below shows different property offencetypes for police recorded crime and the BCS. Thepicture for police recorded crime and the BCS isbroadly similar but their coverage differs. However,vandalism/criminal damage and burglary accountfor the vast majority of offences in both cases.

Differences in BCS and police recorded crime.Differences in the profile of offences between the two sources are influencedby the different coverage of the BCS and police recorded crime. For example,recorded crime includes crime experienced by under-16s and crime associatedwith commercial premises - the BCS does not. Some crimes are more likely tobe reported and recorded than others, overall less than half of BCS crime isreported to the police.

Sectors In recent years, there has been a general trend to increase building security. Many sectors haveadopted higher standards because of the perceived increase in the vulnerability to crime of bothbuilding inhabitants and contents. Healthcare and education premises are particularly sensitive inthis respect, while higher value residential property is invariably considered to be at greater risk,particularly in urban areas.

Education

Security is a prime concern to education authorities, given

the duty of care to pupils and the potential for class

disruption in the event of burglary or theft. Equipment and

documents may not be immediately replaceable, and the

need to do so will inevitably place pressure on budgets.

Ultimately, this may also have an adverse effect on the level

of confidence in and education provided by a school.

Vandalism and unauthorised entry remain a major problem.

Unprotected doors, windows and rooflights are prime

potential entry points, and even unsuccessful attempts to

break in invariably necessitate remedial work. Malicious

damage, attempted arson and theft of electrical equipment

provide strong motivation for opportunist crime.

High specification housing

Figures taken from the Domestic Burglary Crime Statistics,

show that burglary accounts for 7% (733,000 offences) of all

British Crime Survey (BCS) crime, and 12 per cent of total

police recorded crime.

Regardless of whether entry is successful or not, this does not

take account of damage and psychological impact on victims.

High specification housing represents a significant target for

would-be intruders and as statistics show, the households

most at risk, regardless of location and demographic, are

those with no home security measures.

Combined Lintel Shutter System

180LS

The Charter-Integr8 180LS lintel shutter systemincorporates a shutter within a structural lintel,providing an unobtrusive structurally integratedsolution.

The lintel and cavity closer elements of thesystem are installed in the traditional manner atthe time of build. The system addresses theusual issues of lintel design, such as structuralloadbearing, cold bridging and damp proofing,but has the added benefit of acting as a securityshutter when required. The shutter curtain isinstalled as a second-fix item via an internalmaintenance access panel.

In the raised position, the shutter is completelyconcealed from view, retaining the clean lines ofthe opening. In the lowered position, the shutterensures effective resistance against intruderattack. The absence of visible guide rails orboxes limits the potential for effective attack onthe system.

Custom designs such as those for curved andarched windows are available, and aluminiumpolyester powder coating finishes can besupplied in any RAL/BS colour.

The Charter-Integr8 180C is a retro-fit securityshutter solution. The aluminium hood box andguide rails have a neat, compact design tominimise the visual impact on existing buildings.Because of its slimline finish the system is oftenchosen for internal as well as external retro-fitinstallations.

The shutter curtain comprises twin wall extrudedaluminium sections designed to ensure maximumsecurity, and can be supplied in any RAL/BScolour. The system provides a compact shutter ofexceptional strength.

The slimline guide profiles can be face-fixed orreveal-fixed to existing openings, whilst themotor is housed out of sight within the tube ofthe shutter. The Charter-Integr8 180C can behoused within a soffit or roof overhang forcomplete concealment.

Combined Brise Soleil Shutter System

180BS

The Charter-Integr8 180BS has the same featuresas the standard shutter system, but with theadded advantage of having adjustable slats on theshutter curtain – essentially enabling the creationof a brise soleil when in the lowered position. Thisprovides shade and reduces glare and solar gain, apotentially valuable contribution to anysustainable building solution.

The system allows the shutter slats to be adjustedautomatically, following the movement of the sunthroughout the day. This ensures that theoptimum balance of natural daylight is filtered.

The Charter-Integr8 180BS can provide strikingvisual effects to large glazed facade designs andgives a subtle variation to the appearance of thebuilding throughout the day.

Vertical Rise Shutter System

The Charter-Integr8 180V is a shutter design thatis unique to Charter. The shutter rises verticallyfrom a concealed base-mounted housing,providing unobtrusive security where integratedor surface fixing is not possible. The system isespecially suitable for conservatories and glazedarchitectural features.

The system can be used for vertical or angledapplications, spanning widths of up to 6m, and isoperated with stainless steel cables. The housingcan be placed beneath external paved areas(external shutters) or beneath the floor level(internal installations).
