Volunteer opportunities at

AquaTutus Holiday Party

Our Holiday Party will be held on Saturday, December 10 at La Cabana Mexican Restaurant -

as has been our recent tradition . We hope all members – present & past- will bring family

and friends for this delightful holiday gathering. Great food, renewing acquaintanceships,

photo ops with Santa, fun opportunities to give small gifts to family and friends, group danc-

ing – any much more await your presence!

Volunteers are needed – particularly new members – who want to help this year. A flyer and

more information will appear in the next two Tooters, but for now we’re seeking people to

help. The Holiday Party committee will likely not physically meet – most work is done by

email – so it’s not a big time-consumer. If we all share a small load the whole event is easy

and fun for everyone. Also, while there is one lead person per main task, more than one per-

son can help in that task to lighten the burden. You will be reimbursed for any expenses.

The main tasks this year are listed below - some tasks may or may not happen; some will ex-

pand to more detailed tasks. Some are already shown as filled, but please sign up to help

on any task you are interested in.

• Reservations & menu selection; liaison with restaurant. [Patti Shannon]

• Set up ticket sales (preferably advance, on-line)

• Help decide if we will have , and if so, lead children’s games.

• Create flyer and advertise in (Tooter, website, emails, etc). We have a draft flyer from

past years.

• Help decide if we will have , and if so, lead the raffle.

• Seek items from dive shops or other locations for the raffle .

• Bring dessert (typically cake & ice cream).

• Collect entry fee and give nametags at party.

• Bring and setup audio system (Club’s system). [Alan]

• Prepare program, MC at party, play music.

• Be Santa (suit is provided).

• Bring scrapbooks & newsletters from ages past (get from Helga).

Please sign up to help on any task you are interested in. New ideas or comments for the

party are also very welcome. Contact Alan Throop ([email protected] ) or Patti Shan-

non-Hocker ([email protected]) – or any Board Member.

Entertainment Report September 1, 2016

Reported by Kari Klaboe

September’s General Meeting was the second part of a two-part entertainment series focused on Aqua Tu-tus club members. At the meeting, Gayle Hudson, Jono Dove, Fritz Welss, Larry Muth, Linda Muth, Ruth Chofre, Patti Baugh, and Bill Chinook treated us to photos and video taken from dive locations all over the world. Included below are summaries of the presentations provided by Gayle and Linda.

Gayle Hudson - Collection of Photos from Diving

in California, Mexico, and Honduras

A renewed underwater photographer, Gayle began diving in the Caribbean during a Windjammer Bare-foot Cruise in 1981. She received her open water cer-tification in 1982 and has been diving ever since. Gayle is currently the Social Media director for the club, so when she’s not diving with the club, you can find her on our Facebook page!

At the September general meeting, Gayle shared a collection of photos from dives in California, Mexi-co, and Honduras.

FIGURE 04 Hatchet fish on Prince Albert wreck Roatan, Gayle Hudson

Gayle currently shoots with an Olympus Tough TG-3, which has helped her take beautiful photos during dive trips to the Channel Islands in Southern California, Akumal in Mexico, Roatan in Honduras, and even local dive trips to Monterey.

Linda Muth - [FIGURE 5 to FIGURE 8]

A certified scuba diver since 1993 and a member of Aqua Tutus since 2005, Linda has always been interested in photography and started underwater photography shortly after becoming certified. Linda started shooting with a disposable film camera in an Aquashot housing. She now shoots with an Olympus EP1 mirrorless camera and a single Sea & Sea strobe with a Light & Motion GoBe 700 as a focusing light.

Linda’s presentation included stunning photos from her recent Wakatobi dive trip. When asked about her favorite dive or dive spot, she answered, “I enjoy diving around

IN THE NEWS In Memoriam, John Petrash

John Petrash, an early and lifetime member of Aqua Tutus Diving Club, passed away early Sunday, Sep-tember 18, 2016. He was 94 years old.

Joe Timmons has kept in touch with John over the years and last year visited John and his daughter in Berkeley.

John was active in Aqua Tutus from about 1962, was Head Instructor in the mid-60’s and Director of Training in the late-60’s/early 70’s, training and mentoring current members such as Joe Timmons, and Alan Throop. He was a no-nonsense instructor who loved SCUBA diving and the outdoors, and could teach with a style of both authority and respect for students and those around him.

John, a long-time resident of Berkeley, will be buried next to his wife, Helen, in St. Joseph cemetery. No plans for a service have been announced, but we will try to get an email or other notice out to club mem-bers when information is available. Cards may be sent to 1915 Berryman St, Apt A, Berkeley, CA 94709. Donations in his memory may be made to your local Hospice organization.

Battery explosion disturbs the Peace

Barbara J Dwyer

The San Francisco Reef Divers' annual Peace trip to the Channel Islands gotoff with a bang Sunday. Dur-ing the crossing, I twisted on my Light MonkeyRat Jr (to light my bunk area) and the battery exploded

with a loud POP. Someone said it sounded like a gunshot with a silencer.

The battery was a blue Ultrafire Li-ion CR123A 16340, 1000m Ah 3.7v. Photo is from my other back-up light, which I immediately unloaded.

The battery embedded itself at least an inch and a half into the mattress-luckily I did not turn the light on till I was facing my bunk with the lightpointed down. The explosion totally destroyed my light. . Twenty sleepy divers went topside while the crew (aided by Matt Cohn, Carol's son) tore my bunk apart looking for the battery. If that battery had traveled and hit anyone, it would have done serious damage. It took about a half hour to clear the toxic fumes so that people could go back to sleep.

The light was cold and dry when I twisted it on. The battery was not charging or recently charged. Com-ments? Any idea where I'd report this other than the manufacturer?

Special Committee [updates are in bold text]

Holiday Party: Date set - December 10, 2016. [no action needed] Jim and Debbie to set

up a cart on square to pre-pay for raffle tickets.

[no action needed] Jono recommended that we try to write to companies to get donated raffle items for our holiday party. Helga to write to the chamber to see if they’ll donate a t-shirt.

No new business.

Constitution and Bylaws: Don developed a two-page document of

duty descriptions. There are three clas-ses of BOD members: voting mem-bers, non-voting volunteers, and spe-cial committees (e.g. holiday party co-ordinator).

Jim Driggers still working on Google Docs folder for our Constitution and Bylaws.

Don created a Director of Training

write up for Dennis to review and

requested for Helga to provide a

write up for the Information Table

tasks.

As Lifetime Members are added to the

club, this information should be rec-

orded in the Bylaws. The club also

needs to update the Bylaws to de-

scribe the process for adding new

Lifetime Members.

Don: concentrated on the Officer Duties

Dennis: There used to be a group of Aqua Tutus head instructors and they decid-ed who would be the Director of Training for the next year. Now we only have one head instructor, so that process is outdated. Members dis-cussed whether to have the appoint-ment of the Director of Training to be a general club meeting vote or a BOD vote.

Jono: If the Director of Training is a voting member, then the Di-rector should be a generally elected position. [The Director of Training is a voting mem-ber.]

BOD meeting minutes continued Don: Is in favor of having the Board elect the Director

Joe: A voting member of the Board should not be elected by the Board.

Helga: Just vote at next meeting since we will be voting for Board mem-bers.

Don: Is going to revise the Constitu-tion and Bylaws based on feed-back and have Dennis review.

CenCal [no update]

Old Business [updates are in bold text]

[no update] Guest Flier: Alan is working on creating a guest flier to be handed out to new members at club meetings.

The “POC” is a Point of Contact for a club dive. Any member is welcome to plan a dive and put in on our web site calendar. You don’t have to be a dive master, or the director of training, or a board member to do this. Any club dive is done with the expectation that there will be people there to help.
