The Malaya Study Group
THE MALAYA STUDY GROUP was formed in 1959 to study the stamps and postal history of
the geographical area now covered by West Malaysia and Singapore. Since that time, the group
has gone from strength to strength, and now has hundreds of members worldwide.
The Group is based in the United Kingdom. Meetings are held throughout the year with the
majority being in London, but also in Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Scotland, Worthing and
Leicester. Specialist displays are given by individual members, or as a group where all are invited
to contribute.
Auctions are held two or three times a year and include high-class specialist items. Participation
in buying or selling is restricted to Group members only. The Group also operates a Packet
Circuit for UK members, an excellent way to fill those awkward gaps.
The highly respected society journal, The Malayan Philatelist, is distributed four times a year to
all members. It contains a wealth of information and in depth articles on all aspect of
Malayan/Malaysian philately, all members being encouraged to contribute.
During 2012 the MSG produced two new publications:
Government Gazettes, Straits Settlements and Native States, 568 pages A4 on a CD; it contains the
distillate of these Gazettes, a wealth of information easily accessible and available at an
affordable price. This was edited by Dr Nigel Tyre.
Malaya in the British Library Philatelic Collections, 160 pages plus 16 colour plates of unique
treasures in the Collections. A4 hardback with dust jacket.
Several specialist books have been produced by the MSG, including the definitive three volume
work, Malaysia and The Federation of Malaya – their stamps and postal stationery by L C Stanway FRPSL.
Not all members are specialists, and few collect everything. Interest spans such diverse topics
as Censor Mails, Postage Dues, British Military Occupation, Malaysian Definitives, Postal
History, Postal Stationery, Japanese Occupation, a specific State or reign etc.
Membership is £15 per annum, which is excellent value for money!
