    The Sunday Epistle Reading

    My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

    Verse: For he has regarded the humility of his servant.

    The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews (2:11-18)

    BRETHREN, he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call

    them brethren, saying, "I will proclaim thy name to my brethren, in the midst of the congregation I will

    praise thee." And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Here am I, and the children God has

    given me. Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same

    nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and

    deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage. For surely it is not with

    angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his

    brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of

    God, to make expiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to

    help those who are tempted.

    ἐπιλαμβάνεται, ἀλλὰ σπέρματος Ἀβραὰμ ἐπιλαμβάνεται. Ὅθεν ὤφειλεν κατὰ πάντα τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς ὁμοιωθῆναι, ἵνα ἐλεήμων

    The Gospel According to Luke 1:24-38

    In those days, Elizabeth the wife of Zacharias conceived and for five months she hid herself, saying, "Thus the Lord had

    done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men." In the sixth

    month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin

    betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was

    Mary. And he came to her and said, "Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you! Blessed are you

    among women!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort

    of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found

    favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his

    name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne

    of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." And

    Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will

    come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the child to be born will be called holy,

    the Son of God.

    And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who

    was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible." And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let

    it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

    μοι πεποίηκεν ὁ Κύριος ἐν ἡμέραις αἷς ἐπεῖδεν ἀφελεῖν τὸ ὄνειδός μου ἐν ἀνθρώποις. ᾿Εν δὲ τῷ μηνὶ τῷ ἕκτῳ

    ἀπεστάλη ὁ ἄγγελος Γαβριὴλ ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς πόλιν τῆς Γαλιλαίας, ᾗ ὄνομα Ναζαρέτ,πρὸς παρθένον μεμνηστευμένην

    ἀνδρί, ᾧ ὄνομα ᾿Ιωσήφ, ἐξ οἴκου Δαυΐδ, καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς παρθένου Μαριάμ. καὶ εἰσελθὼν ὁ ἄγγελος πρὸς αὐτὴν εἶπε·

    ὑψίστου ἐπισκιάσει σοι· διὸ καὶ τὸ γεννώμενον ἅγιον κληθήσεται υἱὸς Θεοῦ. καὶ ἰδοὺ ᾿Ελισάβετ ἡ συγγενής σου καὶ

    αὐτὴ συνειληφυῖα υἱὸν ἐν γήρει αὐτῆς, καὶ οὗτος μὴν ἕκτος ἐστὶν αὐτῇ τῇ καλουμένῃ στείρᾳ· ὅτι οὐκ ἀδυνατήσει παρὰ

    τῷ Θεῷ πᾶν ῥῆμα. εἶπε δὲ Μαριάμ· ἰδοὺ ἡ δούλη Κυρίου· γένοιτό μοι κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμά σου. καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἀπ᾿ αὐτῆς ὁ

    ἄγγελος.

    A Reading that Explains the Feast of March 25th Six months after John the Forerunner's conception, the Archangel Gabriel was sent by God to Nazareth, a town of

    Galilee, unto Mary the Virgin, who had come forth from the Temple a mature maiden (see Nov. 21). According to the

    tradition handed down by the Fathers, she had been betrothed to Joseph four months. On coming to Joseph's house, the

    Archangel declared: "Rejoice, thou Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." After some

    consideration, and turmoil of soul, and fear because of this greeting, the Virgin, when she had finally obtained full

    assurance concerning God's unsearchable condescension and the ineffable dispensation that was to take place through her,

    and believing that all things are possible to the Most High, answered in humility: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it

    unto me according to thy word." And at this, the Holy Spirit came upon her, and the power of the Most High

    overshadowed her all-blameless womb, and the Son and Word of God, Who existed before the ages, was conceived past

    speech and understanding, and became flesh in her immaculate body (Luke 1:26-38).

    Bearing in her womb the Uncontainable One, the blessed Virgin went with haste from Nazareth to the hill country of

    Judea, where Zacharias had his dwelling; for she desired to find Elizabeth her kinswoman and rejoice together with her,

    because, as she had learned from the Archangel, Elizabeth had conceived in her old age. Furthermore, she wished to tell

    her of the great things that the Mighty One had been well-pleased to bring to pass in her, and she greeted Elizabeth and

    drew nigh to her. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, she felt her six-month-old babe, Saint John the Baptist,

    prophesied of the dawning of the spiritual Sun. Immediately, the aged Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and

    recognized her as the Mother of her Lord, and with a great voice blessed her and the Fruit that she held within herself.

    The Virgin also, moved by a supernatural rejoicing in the spirit, glorified her God and Savior, saying: "My soul doth

    magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour," and the rest, as the divine Luke hath recorded (1:39-

    55)

    Ανάγνωσμα Ἡ λειτουργικὴ παράδοση καὶ ἡ Ὀρθόδοξη πνευματικότητα τοποθετοῦν σὲ ἰδιαίτερη θέση τὴν σημερινὴ ἑορτὴ τοῦ

    Εὐαγγελισμοῦ τῆς Θεοτόκου. Καὶ εἶναι ἀλήθεια ὅτι οἱ θεομητορικὲς ἑορτὲς πλουτίζουν τὴν λειτουργική μας ζωή, γιατί ὁ

    Λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ πάντοτε ἀτενίζει μὲ ἰδιαίτερη ἀγάπη καὶ σεβασμὸ τὴν μεσίτρια τοῦ οὐρανοῦ. Οἱ θεολογικοὶ λόγοι καὶ

    ὕμνοι στὴν Κυρία Θεοτόκο εἶναι σὲ τελευταία ἀνάλυση δοξολογία στὸν Λόγο τοῦ Θεοῦ, ποὺ ἔγινε ἄνθρωπος γιὰ τὴν

    σωτηρία τοῦ ἀνθρώπινου γένους.

    Τὸ μόνο ὄνομα τῆς Θεοτόκου, Μητέρα τοῦ Θεοῦ, περιέχει ὅλο τὸ μυστήριο τῆς οἰκονομίας τῆς σωτηρίας, λέγει ὁ Ἅγιος

    Ἰωάννης ὁ Δαμασκηνός. Ἀποδεικνύεται ἔτσι ὅτι ἡ Μητέρα τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἀποκαλύπτεται στοὺς πιστοὺς ὡς ἡ κατ’ ἐξοχὴν

    μάρτυς τοῦ γεγονότος, πὼς ὁ Θεὸς προσέλαβε πραγματικὰ τὴν ἀνθρώπινη φύση, στὴν ὁποία ἄνοιξε τὸν δρόμο τῆς

    σωτηρίας. Σωτηρία ποὺ ἀποβαίνει πραγματικότητα καὶ γεγονὸς ποὺ σημαίνει τὴν ἔλευση τῆς Βασιλείας τοῦ Θεοῦ. Σὲ μία

    ὁμιλία του ὁ Βασίλειος Σελευκείας σημειώνει χαρακτηριστικά: «Θεοτόκος ἐστί τε καὶ λέγεται. Ἄρα τίς ἐστι ταύτης

    ὑψηλοτέρα ὑπόθεσης;… ὡς γὰρ οὐκ ἔστιν εὔκολον νοεῖν τε καὶ φράζειν Θεόν, μᾶλλον δὲ καθάπαξ ἀδύνατον, οὕτως τὸ μέγα

    τῆς Θεοτόκου μυστήριον, καὶ διανοίας καὶ γλώττης ἐστὶν ἀνώτερον. Ἐπεὶ οὖν Θεὸν σαρκωθέντα τεκοῦσα Θεοτόκος

    ὀνομάζεται».

    Τὸ πρόσωπο τῆς Θεοτόκου δὲν νοεῖται ἀνεξάρτητα ἀπὸ τὸ ἀνθρώπινο γένος. Ἡ Θεοτόκος εἶναι ὁ ὑγιὴς καρπὸς τῆς

    ἀνθρώπινης φύσεως καὶ ἡ καλύτερη προσφορὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων στὸν Χριστό. Στὴν προσφορὰ ὅλης τῆς κτίσεως

    συμμετέχουμε καὶ ἐμεῖς μὲ τὴν Παναγία. Ὁ ἁγιογράφος, ὅταν ἁγιογραφεῖ στὴν κόγχη τοῦ Ἱεροῦ Βήματος τὴν

    Πλατυτέρα, δὲν θέλει νὰ εἰκονίσει μόνο τὴν Παναγία, ἀλλὰ ὅλη τὴν Ἐκκλησία ποὺ ἔχει κέντρο της τὸν Χριστό. Ἡ

    Παναγία ἔγινε Ἐκκλησία καὶ γέννησε τὴν Ἐκκλησία. Ὁ Ἅγιος Γρηγόριος ὁ Θεολόγος λέγει ὅτι ὁ Κύριος «ἐνανθρωπήσας

    σάρκα Ἐκκλησίας προσέλαβε». Εἶναι δὲ χαρακτηριστικὸ ὅτι ὁ Ἅγιος Κύριλλος Ἱεροσολύμων συνδέει τὸ πρόσωπο τῆς

    Θεοτόκου μὲ τὴν ἔννοια τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, γι’ αὐτὸ λέγει: «ὑμνοῦμεν τὴν ἀειπάρθενον Μαρίαν, δηλονότι τὴν ἁγίαν

    Ἐκκλησίαν».

    Ἡ ἀναφορά, λοιπόν, στὴν Παρθένο Μαρία ὑπενθυμίζει τὴν χαρὰ τῆς λυτρώσεως τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀπὸ τὸν Χριστό, γιατί

    ἐκείνη ὑπηρέτησε πιστὰ τὸ μυστήριο τῆς σωτηρίας μας. Ἡ ἁγνὴ καὶ ἄσπιλη Παρθένος, ἡ πιστὴ καὶ ταπεινὴ κόρη τῆς

    Βηθλεέμ, μπροστὰ στὰ μάτια τοῦ Θεοῦ εὑρέθηκε ὡς «ἡ μόνη ἐν γυναιξὶ εὐλογημένη καὶ καλή». Αὐτὴν διάλεξε ὁ Οὐράνιος

    ὅταν ἦλθε τὸ πλήρωμα τοῦ χρόνου καὶ «ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο».

    Ὁ φιλάνθρωπος καὶ ἐλεήμων Θεός μας, ποὺ πάντοτε φροντίζει τὸ γένος τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ἐπειδὴ εἶδε τὸ ἔργο ποὺ ἔπλασε

    μὲ τὰ χέρια Του νὰ εἶναι ὑπόδουλο στὸν διάβολο, θέλησε νὰ ἀποστείλει τὸν Υἱό Του τὸν Μονογενή, τὸν Κύριό μας

    Ἰησοῦ Χριστό, γιὰ νὰ τὸ ἀπολυτρώσει ἀπὸ τὰ χέρια τοῦ διαβόλου. Ἐπειδὴ ὅμως, δὲν θέλησε νὰ τὸ μάθει, ὄχι μόνο ὁ

    Σατανᾶς, ἀλλὰ καὶ οἱ ἴδιες οἱ οὐράνιες δυνάμεις, σὲ ἕναν ἀπὸ τοὺς Ἀρχαγγέλους, στὸν ἔνδοξο Γαβριὴλ ἐκμυστηρεύτηκε

    τὸ μυστήριο. Προοικονομεῖ δὲ ὅτι ἡ Ἁγία Παρθένος θὰ γεννήσει ἁγνὴ καὶ καθαρή, γιατί ἦταν ἄξια τέτοιου καλοῦ.

    Ὅταν ὁ Θεὸς Πατέρας εὐδόκησε νὰ πραγματοποιήσει «τὸ χρόνοις αἰωνίοις σεσιγημένον μυστήριον», «τὸ μυστήριον τὸ

    κεκρυμμένον ἀπὸ τῶν αἰώνων καὶ τῶν γενεῶν», τὸ μυστήριο τῆς Θείας Οἰκονομίας, γιὰ τὴν λύτρωση τοῦ ἀνθρώπινου

    γένους, μόνο αὐτὴ δέχθηκε τὴν θεία ἀποκάλυψη τοῦ μυστηρίου καὶ κρίθηκε ἱκανὴ νὰ ὑπηρετήσει τὸ ἔργο τῆς σωτηρίας.

    Μέσα στὸν χῶρο τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, στὴν πίστη καὶ τὴ δογματική της διδασκαλία, ὁ Εὐαγγελισμὸς εἶναι τῆς «σωτηρίας

    ἡμῶν τὸ κεφάλαιον καὶ τοῦ ἀπ’ αἰῶνος μυστηρίου ἡ φανέρωσις». Ὁ Ἄγγελος ἀνακοινώνει καὶ εὐαγγελίζεται τὴν θεία

    βουλή. Ἀλλὰ ἡ Παρθένος δὲν σιωπᾶ. Ἀνταποκρίνεται στὴν θεία κλήση μὲ ταπείνωση καὶ πίστη: «Ἰδοὺ ἡ δούλη Κυρίου·

    γένοιτό μοι κατὰ τὸ ρῆμά σου».

    Ἡ θεία βουλὴ γίνεται δεκτὴ καὶ βρίσκει ἀνταπόκριση. Καὶ αὐτὴ ἡ ἀνθρώπινη ἀνταπόκριση εἶναι ὅ,τι ἀκριβῶς χρειάζεται

    σ’ αὐτὸ τὸ σημεῖο. Ἡ ὑπακοὴ τῆς Παναγίας ἀντισταθμίζει τὴν ἀνυπακοὴ τῆς Εὔας. Μὲ αὐτὴ τὴν ἔννοια ἡ Παρθένος εἶναι

    ἡ δεύτερη Εὔα καὶ ὁ Υἱός της ὁ δεύτερος Ἀδάμ. Ὅπως ἡ Εὔα ἐξαπατήθηκε ἀπὸ τὸν λόγο ἑνὸς ἀγγέλου, γιὰ νὰ φύγει ἀπὸ

    τὸν Θεὸ παραβαίνοντας τὸν λόγο Του, ἔτσι ἡ Παναγία δέχθηκε τὸν Εὐαγγελισμὸ ἀπὸ τὸν λόγο ἑνὸς Ἀγγέλου, ἔτσι ὥστε

    νὰ φέρει τὸν Θεὸ μέσα της, ὑπακούοντας στὸν λόγο Του.

    «Διὰ τῆς Εὔας ὁ θάνατος, διὰ τῆς Μαρίας ἡ Ζωή», κηρύττει ὁ Ἅγιος Ἱερώνυμος. Αὐτὴ ἡ ὑπακοὴ καὶ ἡ χαρούμενη

    ἀποδοχὴ τοῦ λυτρωτικοῦ σκοποῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἦταν μία πράξη ἐλευθερίας. Ἦταν ἐλευθερία ὑπακοῆς καὶ ὄχι πρωτοβουλία,

    ἐλευθερία ἀγάπης καὶ λατρείας, ταπεινώσεως καὶ ἐμπιστοσύνης.

    Κατὰ τὶς ἡμέρες τῆς δημιουργίας τοῦ κόσμου, ὅταν ὁ Θεὸς ἐξέφερε τὸν ζωντανὸ καὶ παντοδύναμο λόγο Του «γενηθήτω»,

    ὁ λόγος τοῦ Δημιουργοῦ παρήγαγε ἐντὸς τοῦ κόσμου τὰ ὄντα. Ἀλλὰ τὴν ἡμέρα ἐκείνη, ἡ ὁποία δὲν ἔχει τὴν ὅμοιά της

    GREAT LENT AND HOLY WEEK 2018 (February 19 – April 7)

    The Lenten fasting discipline commences after Forgiveness Vespers on February 18 and concludes with the breaking of the fast at Pascha on April 8. In general, the fasting rules during Great Lent and Holy Week are as follows:

    WEEKDAYS (Monday – Friday) are observed as Strict Fast Days. On these days we abstain from meat, dairy, fish with backbones, fowl, alcoholic beverages, and oil.

    WEEKENDS (Saturday and Sunday) are observed as Wine and Oil Days. On these days the fast is relaxed to permit alcoholic beverages and olive and other vegetable oils.

    In addition, two special feast days that fall during this period – Annunciation (March 25) and Palm Sunday (April 1, this year) – are kept as Fish, Wine, and Oil Days. On these days the fast is relaxed to permit fish with backbones, in addition to alcoholic beverages and oil.

    There are certain days of the Holy Week cycle that have special fasting rules.

    Great and Holy Thursday (April 5, this year) is observed as a Wine and Oil Day due to the commemoration of the institution of the Eucharist.

    Great and Holy Saturday (April 7, this year) is observed as a Strict Fast Day – the only Saturday of the year kept as a strict fast; however, wine (but not oil) is permitted.

    Additional Notes:

    1. Meals for the fast should follow the dietary restrictions and be cooked simply. Portions should be smaller than usual.

    2. Fasting on the weekdays of the first week of Great Lent is especially severe. The strictest observance would be to take only two meals during this week – one on Wednesday evening and one on Friday evening after the services scheduled for those nights – keeping Pure Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday as absolute fasts (i.e., no food whatsoever). For many this is impracticable. A good starting place to work towards the strict observance is to keep the first day of Great Lent, Pure Monday, as an absolute fast and to limit meals on the other days.

    3. It is a pious practice to observe Great and Holy Friday as an absolute fast. If one does not have the strength to do this, it is good to abstain from food until after venerating the epitaphios (winding sheet) during Vespers on this day.

    4. If you have a medical condition that requires you to relax the fasting guidelines, then do so. 5. Before you attempt to strictly follow the fasting guidelines, consult with Fr. Stavroforos. It is very

    easy to lose sight of the fact that fasting is merely a means to an end (that is, our salvation) and not an end in itself.

    6. Generally speaking, children and elderly people are allowed to relax the fast under the guidance of their spiritual father.

    Dear Families of St. Barbara, Our Greek Youth Dance program kicked off Sunday February 11 with a brief meeting with the parents then our first practice. Our youth dance troupe is growing so we will have three dance groups this year. Last year we had 23 dancers and this year we plan on 29! Most of the growth is in our younger group. We hope that by dividing the younger group into two it will enable the middle group more independence while allowing the youngest of our dancers some quality time with their teacher. The youngest group is intended for those ages 5-7. You may be returning from last year or relatively new to greek dancing. Classes for these dancers will be from 1-2 pm on Saturday's at the church. The middle group is intended for those ages 7-10. You are likely returning for another year of dance from last year. Classes for these dancers will be after church and Sunday school on Sunday's. The oldest group is intended for those ages 11-17. You are likely returning for another year of dance and were in this group last year. Classes for these dancers will also be after church and Sunday school on Sunday's. Have questions about which group you should go to? Just ask Keith or Chrys. The full schedule is below. If you have officially signed up Chrys and I will plan on seeing you there unless we hear otherwise.     Liturgy of the Pre-sanctified Gifts on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm on Feb. 21, 28, Mar. 7, 14, 21, & 28 As we already have seen, the Eucharistic Divine Liturgy is not celebrated in the Orthodox

    Church on Lenten weekdays. In order for the faithful to sustain their Lenten effort by

    participation in Holy Communion, the Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts is served. The

    service is an ancient one in the Orthodox Church. We officially hear about it in the canons

    of the seventh century, which obviously indicates its development at a much earlier date.

    On all days of the holy fast of Lent, except on the Sabbath, the Lord’s Day, and the holy

    day of the Annunciation, the Liturgy of the Pre-sanctified is to be served (Canon 52,

    Quinisext, 692).

    The Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts is an evening service. It is the solemn Lenten

    Vespers with the administration of Holy Communion added to it. There is no consecration of the Eucharistic gifts at the pre-sanctified

    liturgy. Holy Communion is given from the Eucharistic gifts sanctified on the previous Sunday at the celebration of the Divine Liturgy,

    unless, of course, the feast of the Annunciation should intervene; hence its name of “pre-sanctified.”

    The Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts is served on Wednesday and Friday evenings, although some churches may celebrate it only on one

    of these days. It comes in the evening after a day of spiritual preparation and total abstinence. The faithful who are unable to make the effort

    of total fasting because of weakness or work, however, normally eat a light Lenten meal in the early morning.

    During the psalms of Vespers, the pre-sanctified gifts are prepared for communion. They are transferred from the altar table where they

    have been reserved since the Divine Liturgy, and are placed on the table of oblation. After the evening hymn, the Old Testament scriptures

    of Genesis and Proverbs are read, between which the celebrant blesses the kneeling congregation with a lighted candle and the words: “The

    Light of Christ illumines all,” indicating that all wisdom is given by Christ in the Church through the scriptures and sacraments. This

    blessing was originally directed primarily to the catechumens—those preparing to be baptized on Easter—who attended the service only to

    the time of the communion of the faithful.

    After the readings, the evening Psalm 141 is solemnly sung once again with the offering of incense. Then, after the litanies of intercession

    and those at which the catechumens were dismissed in former days, the pre-sanctified Eucharistic gifts are brought to the altar in a solemn,

    silent procession. The song of the entrance calls the faithful to communion.

    Now the heavenly powers [i.e., the angels] do minister invisibly with us. For behold the King of Glory enters. Behold the mystical

    sacrifice, all fulfilled, is ushered in.

    Let us with faith and love draw near that we may be partakers of everlasting life. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

    After the litany and prayers, the Our Father is sung and the faithful receive Holy Communion to the chanting of the verse from Psalm 34:

    “O taste and see how good is the Lord. Alleluia.” The post-communion hymns are sung and the faithful depart with a prayer to God who

    “has brought us to these all-holy days for the cleansing of carnal passions,” that he will bless us “to fight the good fight, to accomplish the

    course of the fast, and to attain unto and to adore the holy resurrection” of Christ.

    The Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts is traditionally considered to be the work of the sixth-century pope, Saint Gregory of Rome. The

    present service, however, is obviously the inspired liturgical creation of Christian Byzantium.
